Desaparecidos – Survival of the Fittest/It's a Jungle Out There Lyrics | 19 years ago |
On my earlier comment - simile, not metaphor. |
The Weakerthans – Confessions of a Futon-Revolutionist Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It's the little things about the Weakerthans that blow me away. Samson is great with details. For example, if you listen closely to this song, he sings: "Let's lay our bad days down here, dear ET ... " "Let's plant a bomb at city hall ET ... " "et" is the Latin word for "and" (from where we get the ampersand "&"). |
Pedro the Lion – Rapture Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I like the lines "The seed and the spill The bitter pill yet undiscovered" referring to withdrawal as a form of contraception because the cheating "couple" didn't have the birth control pill. When will people realize that any kind of contraception is [mentally, physically, and spiritually] bad for you? |
Desaparecidos – Give Me the Pen Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Simplicity in music may be key in some cases, but Desaparecidos are pretty complex. They have those chaotic guitars which are just beautiful. And the lyrics...brilliant. So I say, yes, simplicity is good, but complexity too. |
Desaparecidos – Survival of the Fittest/It's a Jungle Out There Lyrics | 20 years ago |
This is one of the best written songs in ages. I love all of the metaphors. the salesman as "a snake in the grass" - hidden, yet ready to attack; the wolves as corporations, pushing consumerism on culture; the MGM lion selling movies, selling concessions; bobcats eating asphalt (Bobcat is a brand of heavy equipment used in construction [such as parking lots]); eagles into buildings. I am surprised at the 9/11 reference. Desaparecidos also made a 9/11 reference in Give Me the Pen, which was written shortly after the band formed in 2001. A brilliant song, indeed. Who does the songwriting in the band? Is it all Oberst, or do the other members help? |
Caviar – The Good Times Are Over Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Seriously, though, what other band would use "prestidigitation" in a song (save Bad Religion, maybe)? Blake is a great songwriter. I also love the "She's American as 3.1416" (American as pi) reference. Wit. |
