"a slow descent from unique to routine"
i interpreted that line as a relationship slowly descending from unique to a routine. and in my opinion, routines are boring. ok, i'm done. |

As for so many different kinds of bands being labeled emo, I think that has happened because emo is a fictitious musical genre that doesn't have any real defining characteristics and so different people draw different conclusions to what emo music is. Any real genre of music has definite sounds and characteristics that can be identified and emo doesn't have that, it's a label that is being slapped on to everything just like grunge was in the nineties.
This is an excellent song.. Chris is very talented. I want his babies. |

| Straylight Run – Existentialism on Prom Night Lyrics

Straylight most notably makes use of the 6/8 time signature in “Existentialism on Prom Night.” A slower song, this one manages to capture the emotion of the lyrics perfectly in the piano part. The song progresses to a near shout-along chorus, before Nolan again pulls the rug out from under us, finishing the song on a soft and delicate note. This is one of the most emotional songs I’ve ever heard, and the band’s songwriting skill allows them to tug even harder at your heartstrings. |

| Brand New – Flying at Tree Level (Version 1.0) Lyrics

I’m aware of how cliché this sounds but I think these lyrics primarily disclose the end of a relationship.
The first lines summarise the central theme of the song. “We were doomed from the start, As lovers are”
This suggests that considering the concept of lovers, the demise of their relationship was always inevitable.
I agree with the point Jon made, about the shallowness of writing a song based upon his personal feelings. This song walk us through the break-up itself.
“The arrow hitting the mark so you know who we are” tells us that he hopes what he says comes out right and when he says “and the message is sent” this implies that he’s told her how he feels.
The sizeable scars he refers to could be how he perceives his former relationships.
The line “Always dragging your feet over sand and over hot cement” illustrates her dragging her feet over materials which harm/irritate the body, thus causing a scar or discomfort. It sounds as if he’s also saying that this is self-imposed; she's hurt herself intentionally or has motivated him to hurt her.
I think the line “you either push or pull” states that you can’t push and pull at the same time in a relationship or else the forces will be balanced, i.e. the relationship stays stationary.
He addresses the person who is the subject of the song directly throughout the song, “so you know who we are” but I believe that the bridge is his escapism; where he detaches himself from the situation his is in, “I see my baby. She’s starry-eyed”.
“Please keep the crowd under control, this is the weight of my conscience” confirms that the crowd of thoughts in his head is weighing him down.
i could have completely misinterpreted the song but oh well. i'm sure i'll get over it. :o) |
