keep in mind any work is best when it is open to different interpretations. but i dont think freud has any place in this song. to me, it is the story of a soilder returning home from vietnam and just being completely changed from the person he was before he left. the two lines that have led many people to throw out random citations of freud's oedipus complex (with little if any support from the rest of the song),
"Father, yes son, I want to kill you
Mother...I want to...fuck you"
i believe this chould be thought of on a larger scale. The soilder is trying to readjust to society and be "normal". Instead all he can feel is a hatred of the men that sent him over seas and destroyed the person that he once was or "Father". They made him kill and he feels that is the only appropriate way of dealing with him. Or even on a smaller scale fathers generally raise their boys to be tough rugged brave men. They were probably a driving force threatening to disown them and pushing their sons to fight. As to the soilders mother, he wants to love her. But the war has changed him, all he can feel is hatred, violence, and agression. so his love for his mother is mistranslated as a strong desire to "fuck" her, because everything the soilder feels is shaped by his experience in the war. Thus rendering him incapable of living as he had before vietnam. |

who is anyone to tell someone that their interpretation is wrong? the beauty of any form of art is that of interpretation. being able to relate to it in a personal way, even if it means gibberish to you and you just like the sound of it, that is what makes music so amazing. allow yourself to feel the music, and that means opening yourself up to whatever it makes you feel. Lennon said, "living is easy with eyes closed misunderstanding all you see." don't shoot other people down because they dare to have different ideas. and i would definitely recommend downloading software and playing the song backwards. its at least worth checking out. if you like the song, a lot more time than you can imagine might have been put in working a seperate path for listeners to hear. crazy. |
