Why, I do believe I am comment 6-6-fuckin-6! I think that gives me some serious badass license, so here I go: Hey Green Day, 1995 called, they want you back. Honestly, Green Day faded from relevance a long long time ago and if this is their comeback attempt, it's not a very good one. What in the hell are they trying to do? Are they trying to convince us that they're genuine neo-punks? Please. I have a suspicion that Green Day wrote this song for its shock value. Hooray. Consider me shocked. Being provocative gets you 15 minutes of fame, all right. Hell, the other day, I exposed myself to passerbys on the street. I felt so important and popular, until I got thrown in a cell with a very large inmate. The point is, Green Day can throw up shock words like "American idiot" and "faggot" all they like - it might convince some teenyboppers that Green Day is the vanguard of some important cultural revolution. Maybe Green Day has a point beneath all those buzzwords. But more likely than not, they don't. Am I buying into their leftist anthem? Uh no. For all of its shock value, this song is no better than the people it's supposed to slam. Redneck agenda? Is that what they're calling Southerners now? Show some respect for other cultures. True, they might not be as cultured and open minded as you, Green Day, but don't simplify everything down to this ridiculous name-calling. What did you prove - that you're an arrogant prick and you're better and smarter than everyone? I don't care if you're liberal or reactionary or what. The high-mindedness in this song is disgusting. Ha, American Idiot...what exactly does that mean? Is it just an inflammatory catchphrase? Bashing America sure is popular nowadays. So is Lindsay Lohan. That's not to say that we shouldn't critique America - in fact, we're doomed if we don't. But one thing Green Day fails to realize is that George Bush doesn't represent America. The "rednecks" don't represent America. Green Day doesn't represent America. All of our elections are split almost down the middle. What does that say about America? We're a diverse country and that's a good thing. One thing we shouldn't be is a polarized country. That kind of environment spawns the ideological slaves that I think Green Day is raging against. It also spawns tools like Green Day. Songs like this one are divisive, supposed to rally the troops around the liberal cause. Thank you, Green Day, for contributing to the schism that's diving America and preventing discourse and progress. If anyone's an American idiot, it would be Green Day. |

kanye west is such a dumbshit. well ok, maybe not, he's pretty well-spoken and he's obviously intelligent but there's a difference between intelligence and wisdom. his anti-education bent is a little disturbing. i know there are many legitimate gripes about higher education. i can see why kanye may be frustrated with it. but there's absolutely no valid reason for using these institutional flaws to discredit the notion of higher education. statistics back up the value of a college education. even if you think you're not going anywhere and your major sucks, giving up is a sign of your weakness, not higher education's weakness. my parents were refugees who came to this country, worked their way into college, and now can pursue their american dreams. all it takes is initiative and drive. so kanye, don't take one episode of failure and dramatize it into a widespread criticism of higher education. there are plenty of stories to contradict your cynicism. before complaining about the system, reevaluate yourself to see why you're not succeeding. maybe you should have picked a career earlier. maybe you should pick a better major. maybe you shouldn't be addicted to retail. nobody's forcing you to buy airs. it's not that the entire world is aligned against the success of any race, gender, creed, or whatever. there are inequalities, that's for sure. but to fold your arms and refuse to work in an imperfect world is a little childish. especially when a lot of the reasons for your lack of success is a result of your own flaws. so just own up before you lay blame. ok sorry for the longwinded comment, but as a college student, i felt obligated to defend college. i take back what i said about kanye, he's the most intelligent, admirable rapper i've seen yet. i just think he's a little misguided. |
