| Radiohead – A Wolf at the Door (It Girl. Rag Doll) Lyrics | 18 years ago |

in the introduction to A Streetcar Named Desire, Tennessee Williams says... "Luxury is the wolf at the door and its fangs are all the little vanities and conceits and laxities that Success is heir to...When an artist learns this, he knows where the danger is. " Not sure if Thom ever read Streetcar, but if you read the intro and read the lyrics here it gives you something else to consider in regard to the song's meaning. |

Thom had this to say concerning spinning plates: "I don’t think about redemption. I focus on the most imminent ecological issues. You know, there are so many scenarios on the horizon at the moment that will result in mass suffering…For the most part in the West we worship a certain type of economics, which is like worshipping a false god..it’s a theory about economics which will collapse, and the sooner people realize that, the quicker they will be able to understand how we should be engaging with the world around us…To me, it’s like spinning plates: I’m not sure how long we can keep this trick going…" |

To add to my comment above, it's a song about abortion, from a pro-life extremist's view. Now it should make a bit more sense to some of you. And it's a great song too, btw. |

I'm pretty sure this song is about abortion. Read deeper into the lyrics and it will start to make sense...especially the last line(s). |

| A Perfect Circle – Judith Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
Actually, Maynard's mother was named Judith. And his mother suffered from a aneurysm. He was not pissed off at God or religion. He actually thought her faith was alright for her to have because it was really all she had left. What he thought was so hypocritycal was the fact that people, family, freinds of Judith would stop by her house and tell her it was good she kepped her faith. Then just talked shit behind her back, about god abbandoning her. The song Judith says "Fuck YOUR God" not "Fuck God" Maynard refers to this on the Amotion DVD if you put the commentaries on. He says......."When I say fuck your God, I don't mean THE God, I mean your perception of God, a God that would abandon, a God that would punish.........Genesis 1:1, In the begining was the Word and the Word was yahweh/jehova meaning light......love Not an old man with a beard." The song Judith is about how people have fucked up perceptions of God. |

| Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
After reading over the posts from other people, I've put together a full analysis of the entire song. Hope you enjoy it... Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven has often been named the best rock and roll song of all time, if not the best song ever created. There has been much controversy over its meaning over the years, and not many people can seem to find the truth. Led Zeppelin vocalist Robert Plant and guitarist Jimmy Page wrote the song, and have never clearly stated it’s true meaning. Many people have different interpretations of the song, everything from World War II references to references to Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. After analyzing the lyrics to this song many times (MANY times), I believe I have come up with a pretty good general idea of what I think this song is truly about. This is my opinion, however, and I cannot speak on behalf of Plant nor Page about what they think it means to them, even as I tend to refer to their thoughts on the song through my opinion. I will simply refer to the author of this piece as Plant, as to keep things simple and since he is the vocalist he is an obvious choice over Page. The best place to start a lyrical analysis would be the beginning (or so it would seem). The first verse of the song are as follows. 1) There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold 2) And she's buying a stairway to heaven. 3) When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed 4) With a word she can get what she came for. 5) Ooh, ooh, and she's buying a stairway to heaven. Alright, in the first line Plant is saying that a certain lady thinks all that glitters is gold, meaning that the woman only thinks of material goods and money of being anything of value in her life. Why he chooses a lady rather than a man I believe is simply to make her seem more innocent and perhaps ignorant to her situation in the song. Please do not think of this as a sexist statement, as I interpret this song as a very religious one, and in the bible the woman is seen at times as such. An example of this is when Eve tells Adam of the apple in the Garden of Eden, she is both innocent and ignorant to the situation at hand hence my interpretation of the meaning behind using a woman. In the second line it states that she is buying the stairway to heaven. The woman is using money and materialistic things to make her happy, so her materialism is her “stairway to heaven”, or her way to happiness in her life. The third and forth lines of this verse are quite hard to figure out exactly. Plant says that the woman knows that if she gets to the store and it is closed, with a word she can get what she came for. My theory is that she knows that if she is unable to satisfy her happiness in life through materialism, she can turn to drugs to give her happiness. She came to the store for happiness, and if she is not content, with a word she can substitute that need with another substance such as drugs, both are just illusions but nonetheless satisfy her needs. The fifth and final line in this verse is the same as the first. Either way you put it, she is simply buying the stairway to heaven, or using illusions to find her way to happiness. The second verse brings our lady friend to her problem at hand, the first sense of wrong in her way of life. The second verse is as follows. 1) There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure 2) 'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings. 3) In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings, 4) Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven. 5) Ooh, it makes me wonder, 6) Ooh, it makes me wonder. In the first and second lines go hand in hand. She is seeing the signs on the wall. These signs are not actual writings on a wall, but signs that she’s seen in her life that are telling her that her way of life isn’t the true way for eternal happiness. She wants to be sure, because sometimes words have two meanings. She looks at these signs and questions them, thinks hard about their meaning. She is trying to look for an answer that suits her in these messages, and she wants to believe that they aren’t true so she ends up trying to change their meaning. The third line refers to a songbird that is singing in a tree by the brook. This is a very interesting line for many reasons. First off, it doesn’t seem to tie into the rest of the verse at first glance (or first time hearing it). My interpretation is that the bird is just in harmony in its surroundings. It is happy just for its own existence, its being. It sings to show its happiness and its surroundings show that you don’t need material things to be happy, and that you can still be happy with what God has given you. The forth line just further stresses the idea that sometimes our thoughts can deceive us. What we think brings us happiness might not always make us happy. This explains why the lady would have to turn to drugs when her possessions did not satisfy her need for happiness. In the fifth and sixth lines, Plant is saying that the lady’s situation makes him wonder about his situation and his repeating of the line stresses his wonder on the subject. Could he learn anything from this lady? Will he go down the same path she did? Is he in fact buying his own stairway to heaven in his life? The third verse takes us to Plant’s own life. 1) There's a feeling I get when I look to the west, 2) And my spirit is crying for leaving. 3) In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees, 4) And the voices of those who stand looking. 5) Ooh, it makes me wonder, 6) Ooh, it really makes me wonder. This verse is very much Plant and the band looking at themselves and what they’ve become. In lines one and two, Plant gets a feeling when he looks to the west, and his spirit cried for leaving. Plant gets a feeling when he looks back at his life, the west perhaps refers to where he grew up, or where he was before he became apart of the band. He looks back at what he’s done in life and fears that he has left his spiritual path and headed down the road of materialism. His spirit is crying for leaving, or he wants to go back to the way things were before he became apart of Led Zeppelin, before he was consumed by materialism and go back to his spiritual roots. The third and forth lines are hard to put a finger on. But I think that when Plant says that in his thoughts, he has seen rings of smoke through the trees means that he can see that the world (the trees) is slowly burning down, or losing its spirituality. People cannot see the fire and all that is visible is the smoke above their world. They know the fire is there, but they do nothing about it because they cannot see it, but they know it is there because of the smoke rising above. The voices of those who stand looking are the people going about their business, ignoring the signs of the fire in their world and doing nothing about it. The fifth and sixth lines again is Plant simply wondering about the situation at hand. He knows that it is happening, and he feels that there must be something done about it, but what? And it makes him wonder… The forth verse is Plant’s theory of the situation laid out in the third verse. It is as follows. 1) And it's whispered that soon if we all call the tune 2) Then the piper will lead us to reason. 3) And a new day will dawn for those who stand long 4) And the forests will echo with laughter. Now, I’ve heard many people say that the piper in the second line of this verse is referring to God. But unlike what most people think, I believe the piper is supposed to represent evil and temptation. I believe Plant got the imagery from the Pide Piper where the piper plays a tune and all the children follow him out of town and the parents never see them again. It is whispered, or rumored, that if we all call the tune, or if we give into temptation, we will be led to reason, or the answers to all of our questions will be revealed. But if we follow the piper’s tunes of temptation, his false claims to bring us to reason will untimely lead us to damnation. The third and forth lines are pretty self-explanatory, I believe. A new day will dawn for those who stand long, and the forests will echo with laughter. It means that those who do not give into temptation will eventually be standing on the day of reckoning and all will be filled with joy and laughter. We’ve now come to the fifth verse, which pretty much is a continuation of the forth line in the respect that it is explaining what Plant and others can do to avoid such a fate as damnation. The fifth verse reads. 1) If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now, 2) It's just a spring clean for the May queen. 3) Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run 4) There's still time to change the road you're on. 5) And it makes me wonder. In my opinion the first line simply means that if there is something bothering you, or you’ve done something wrong, don’t worry too much about it. The second line goes on to say that it’s nothing that you cannot fix. If you ask for forgiveness and learn from your mistakes, it’s not something that is unforgivable. The third and forth lines of this verse state that there are two roads you can go down, the path of good and the path of evil. But it goes on to say that in the long run, or ultimately, you still have a chance to change your ways and follow the right path. The fifth line again is Plant wondering about his life and what he can do to make it change for the better, and what he can do in order to follow the right path. In the sixth verse we go back to the signs of temptation, and we also go back to the lady and her situation at hand. 1) Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know, 2) The piper's calling you to join him, 3) Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know 4) Your stairway lies on the whispering wind. The humming in your head that is mentioned in the first line is temptation, and you just can’t seem to shake it. The second line explains, in case you didn’t know, that the temptation is only evil (Satan?) calling you to follow him. The third line goes back to the lady, and Plant telling her to hear the wind blow, and to be at peace with her natural surroundings and the things that God has given her. The forth line explains that the answer the lady has been has been looking for all along lies on the messages that the wind has been blowing her way. In the end, it is not materialism that will make her happy, but to appreciate the gifts God has given her, and that these things will being her eternal happiness. At long last, we’ve come to the final verse of Stairway to Heaven. My personal favorite verse, which ties everything together nicely. 1) And as we wind on down the road 2) Our shadows taller than our soul. 3) There walks a lady we all know 4) Who shines white light and wants to show 5) How everything still turns to gold. 6) And if you listen very hard 7) The tune will come to you at last. 8) When all are one and one is all 9) To be a rock and not to roll. 10) And she's buying a stairway to heaven. Sadly, our friend the lady has not learned her lesson. The first verse says that as we all wind on down the road, meaning as we all follow our own paths. Our shadows walk taller than our soul. Now that is a line to ponder on. It was hard for me to put the second line’s meaning into words, but I think that it means this. At first people believe they can simply change their fate and walk down the right path when they need to, but as their shadows grow long and tower over them, they realize they may have been too late. The third line brings us to the lady, whom we all know by now. The forth and fifth lines tell how the lady shines her bright light and tries to show us how wonderful her riches really are. It seems to me that this lady is made as an example, she represents all the people who go down the wrong path. People we know in our everyday lives, who try to make us give into temptation. People who, like the piper, play their soothing tunes to try and lure us down the wrong path. The second part of this verse stresses the final meaning of this song, and it starts in the sixth and seventh lines. They tell us that if we listen closely, and drown out the other tunes that are given by our own pipers, we will hear the right tune. The tune that will show us the true answers and make our lives happiness and meaning. The eighth verse explains that we are all in this together as people. All are one means that no one is better than anyone else, no matter what they think their status is. One is all, meaning that God is in us all, and that we are all God’s children. The ninth verse tells us the most important lesson of the whole song. To be a rock and not to roll. To stand your ground and be your own person no matter how rich or poor you may be, and not to roll along, or follow along with others just to fit in and be a part of the crowd. The final line of the final verse brings us back to the lady. She hasn’t learned her lesson, and Plant feels it is important for us to remember her mistake. After hearing everything Plant has said in the song, she’s still buying the stairway to heaven. |

| This song has become my favorite Incubus song (at least for right now), and as far as it's meaning goes, it wouldnt be too farfetched to say it was about Dirk. But my feeling is why write more then one song about it, when Leech is obviously about Dirk. It quite possible, but I feel that he is probably talking about someone else...maybe a close friend or an ex-girlfriend. Then again, when the chorus come along it totally changes the mood of the song and kinda makes you think this song has a way deeper meaning then it first implies. And the solo before the final chorus is just awesome. Perhaps it is about someone who totally gave up on himself and Boyd portrays his mind as a sick, sad little world. The I'm really not sure but I'm pretty sure it's not about Dirk. Either way it's a kick ass song and Incubus did a great job on it. | |

Documents how fickle the world can be and how the only certainty that exists is that everything eventually runs it's course. We've been exploring drum-'n'-bass here and there on stage, playing little improvisational ditties in between real songs from the records. José would start playing a drum-'n'-bass he'd made up, I'd play my didgeridoo to it, and songs started forming out of live things like that. That's how "Nowhere Fast" was written, through improvisational live jams. ~Brandon Boyd |

Tells a small story about a person who has the world at the tips of her fingers but through the art of distraction and compromise she wakes up one day to find that it has slipped by her. | Incubus – Nice To Know You Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
I had a moment in my life about a year ago where I was way too close to everything that was going on and I was blind, I felt like I was asleep. And the clouds parted for kind of a strange reason and I gained perspective. What happened was my hand had fallen asleep on the airplane on the way to Europe and it remained asleep for about 10 days, which was kind of scary. I must have pinched a nerve or something. But as my hand started waking up, the clouds started breaking away from that emotional state as well. The two happened simultaneously, so I created a simple metaphor for it. So it's basically a song about gaining perspective on a situation. ~Brandon Boyd "Waking Limb"...nuff said |

I was on an airplane last year when a talk show began playing on the TVs. I decided to start narrating for the people, which is a really great game if you're ever bored enough. I realized a time will probably come when television will watch us if we're watching it, if that hasn't already happened, figuratively or literally. It sounded like some sort of pseudo-Big Brother nightmare, so I wrote it down. ~Brandon Boyd |
