| Rihanna – Pon De Replay Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| What exactly does "pon de replay" mean? What, for that matter, does "pon" mean? | |
| Damien Rice – Eskimo Lyrics | 20 years ago |

My interpretation of "Eskimo friend"- someone who knows how to survive the cold In this case, the cold would be an emotional condition/climate rather than a physical one. My two cents. |

| Sheryl Crow – Redemption Day Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
What is worse, knowing that there are those who suffer, or knowing that those who cause their pain, know they're causing the pain yet continue to choose to do so? "Oh what mercy sadness brings If God be willing "- perhaps if such people could feel the pain of others, feel sadness for them, they wouldn't continue to choose to hurt them. The chorus is pretty obvious. The nightly news blasts us with so many horrific images of disasters and violent crimes and such that we just become numb to it and go on with our life. Even if we have great leaders, no one bothers to listen to what they say. We get the scraps off their plates. She questions the motives of her politicians. The last line is about a country in a state of war, a new generation, and the grand ideology that we are taught in history classes- FREEDOM |

| Vanessa Carlton – Paint It Black (Rolling Stones cover) Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| The song is angsty and dark because the meaning is. The line of black cars and her love who'll never come back is a reference to the singers beloved who died. The black cars are for the funeral. The red door she wants painted black? Red is the color of passion and the color of blood- life. The girls in summer clothes are too bright and alive for her to bear to look at. The singer's in so much angry pain from the death of the beloved that bright signs of life simply add to the pain. Surely I'm not the only one to have lost someone and wondered why it wasn't like the movies where the birds cease their cheery chirping and the clouds block out the sun and the sky weeps. | |
| Melanie Safka – Lay Down (Candles in the Rain) Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
white birds- doves=peace the ones who stand and frown- those in favor of the war/military action if you're bleeding inside eachothers wounds, you're pretty close the same disease= longing for peace if you raise the candles high enough, people will see you- not just your silhouette the rain- tears? people came for different reasons, but they all came to do the same thing with other people in an effort to be noticed and make a difference |

| Melanie Safka – The Good Book Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
Poor little hairy kids- hippies festival- Woodstock? Animals have it easy. They don't have any moral values or thoughts much higher than their immediate comfort/survival. The rest of it is all about connecting with people and creating. |

| Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
I just want to pick at a few lines: There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold And she's buying a stairway to heaven. When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed With a word she can get what she came for. Ooh, ooh, and she's buying a stairway to heaven. Perhaps a reference to the Tower of Babel? (stairway to Heaven) There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure 'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings. In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings, Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven. Ooh, it makes me wonder, Ooh, it makes me wonder. Perhaps a reference to Buddism? (tree by the brook) There's a feeling I get when I look to the west, And my spirit is crying for leaving. In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees, And the voices of those who standing looking. Ooh, it makes me wonder, Ooh, it really makes me wonder. Maybe a reference to the American West and the Westward expansion? And it's whispered that soon if we all call the tune Then the piper will lead us to reason. And a new day will dawn for those who stand long And the forests will echo with laughter. If we all just follow the leader, the leader will lead us to a happy place. The problem is however, that…well…remember the ending of The Pied Piper? If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now, It's just a spring clean for the May queen. Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run There's still time to change the road you're on. And it makes me wonder. Perhaps a reference to the poem about the two roads in the narrow wood? Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know, The piper's calling you to join him, Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know Your stairway lies on the whispering wind. A reference to Blowing in the Wind. And as we wind on down the road Our shadows taller than our soul. There walks a lady we all know Who shines white light and wants to show How everything still turns to gold. When are shadows REALLY tall? Morning or Evening. The beginning or ending of a day. When White light is bright and blinding. The Lady of course, wants to live in her own world where everything that shines is gold. And if you listen very hard The tune will come to you at last. When all are one and one is all To be a rock and not to roll. The line about the unmoving rock is a reference to the earlier line about those who stand long. |

| Ralph Stanley – O Death Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| It seems pretty straightforeward, it is a young man's dialogue with death. The young man or boy feverishly pleads for his life even as Death descends upon him. | |
| Bon Jovi – It's My Life Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| This is a song for those who are still living, those who cling to each moment with hope-even as it passes. Our time is limited on this earth, if we want to do something, we have to do it now, not wait for tommorow, because each day will be harder than the last. You just have to stand your ground and make your voice heard and maybe you'll be the last one standing. | |
