Thrice – Image of the Invisible Lyrics 20 years ago
I must agree with all the other guys who have made mention to this song being about Christians and the Christian life. And I also must respectfully disagree with the comments made by dark zeph.
Dude, the bible has been referred to as a manual or handbook to life so obviously it is going to cover everything that happens in life. The bible calls us not to judge (other religions) and it is a Christians duty not to segregate but to show the love and compassion Christ showed to us to everyone.

I see the point u are making about people groups and being shunned by society and u make a well thought out point, but it isn’t a point that denies this song being Christians. Christians are a group unified as one body and they are often shunned like u said.

Now referring to the actual song, the line "more than just carbon and chemicals" can be referring to the fact that our existence goes beyond what this world can prove. "Carbon and chemicals" seems like a very scientific way to describe a human, and science is what the world heavily believes in.
"Free will is ours" - a choice to accept God's existence, a choice to accept Him as our Maker and Father, a choice of how we will respond to circumstances, etc. Choice is something we always have and are always having to make. The wrong choice is usually the easier choice, and coming from a Christian, a life in service of God is often not easier then a life without eternal purpose, but it is far more rewarding as this choice to not make a choice will ultimately end in the eternal torment of our souls. I am kind of going of on a tangent here so I’m going to move on.

Canticle actually means a song or chant ESPECIALLY with words taken from a hymn or biblical text, not "if u want to be more extreme"

Of course the meaning of a song varies from person to person and if this didn’t happen we wouldn’t have a wide variety of people liking the same band, but wouldn’t the reference give u a much more informed insight into the meaning of the song. Obviously all these biblical references that thrice use prove that Dustin obviously reads the bible and I’m sure someone with a desire for knowledge wouldn’t just use something cause it sounds cool. He is using the meaning of the reference.

If you want to know when Christians are the cull in a situation take a look at the world you live in. There are very few Christians that would speak out publicly because they are ashamed of their faith. This is because Christianity is rejected by the world as a Christian’s life apposes the world's self serve policy.

A name only holds value if it is known. And if everyone else hates us and classifies us, judging us before they know us, then I doubt they would care to know our names. God knows our names and us. He created us, He knows our potential, and we can find our solace in Him and then show the love He has for us to those who reject us.

Though shadow (evil) may overtake (surround, effect) us, we are known.
No matter how much sin or evil we can do, God still cares for us and has us in mind.

We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. I think that sets us all on equal playing fields. As above stated: Christians have just admitted that they have sinned and accepted Christ's love that is open to everyone as He loves everyone equally. He does not love the sin that we partake in (sometimes willingly sometimes because we are human and imperfect) but we were not made for this earth and sin is not a part of us. The "Image of the Invisible line" simply means that Christians are called to commit their lives to attempting to make themselves Christ-like. It is called Discipleship. As Christianity is open for everyone, everyone is able to commit their lives to this cause. It often seems impossible but God takes the flaws that all humans possess and fills them in, as long as we are committing ourselves to His cause by serving Him or singing out His canticle. We sing out this canticle because that is all that we can do.

Yeah. That was pretty long or pointlessly long, but meh. That’s my opinion. Sorry if it felt like i was flaming anyone that has a different view, it is just frustrating knowing that this song offers so much more than you may be getting out of it now.

I will admit i havent listened to these guys and dont know there vocal/musical talent but lyrically these guys are the worst band i've ever heard. i know there are probly a fair few ppl who like this type of stuff but i think bands like this are just degrading the whole emotional/meaningful side of music.

Once again there are some really good perceptions on this song and i think what is most important is what the song means to you.
But still it is fair too similiar to the passage in proverbs to be just coincidence.
"She calls from the hilltops" It says in proverbs that lady wisdom (or wateva you want to call her) built her house on the heights of the city, therefore calling from the hilltops down to the streets, where dustin or a character is there with temptation, telling him not too. "Water Is Poison"
There is wisdom and temptation both having their say on things and he ultimately gives into temptation although he knew it was wrong.
But yeah, thats only how I see it. I liked ThricePWNSrapsux's view on things. Good job u l33t bastard.

Woah, so many great perceptions and ideaas.
This site is great. But anyway, I pretty sure this song was inspired by the book by the same title, written by C.S. Lewis, a christian author, as stated above.
C.S. Lewis also has a book titled "The Abolition of Man" in case anyone is interested.
