Hope of the States – Black Dollar Bills Lyrics 21 years ago
I get the feeling its about how money can't buy you people. I'm sure I read in a magazine the meaning they intended though...

Manic Street Preachers – If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next Lyrics 21 years ago
gongozolo has pretty much hit the nail on the head with this one! The song seems to be a reflection on how those who took part were used and abused. The Communists were dictated to by the USSR and presured into trying to wipe out the anarchists (which IMO lost the "left" the war). The anarchists lost a hell of a lot of members, and notable heroes like Buenaventura Durruti.

It is one of the saddest songs I know, thinking about those who gave their lives in good faith for what ended up amounting to nothing.

"We carry a new world here, in our hearts"

I get the feeling this song is about the failure of the miners' strike of 1984; a failure which had a big impact on their lives.

I'm guessing this one is about censorship. Censorship in the media, to be more specific. Pretty much for the reasons above, but for some other reasons.

"floating in a soundproof costume" - Not censorship as such, but the fact that normal people do not have control of the media. Like Tony Benn said "You have the right to freedom of speech, but you do not have the right to be heard".

"here comes the monolith" - Could this be talking about Globalisation? The idea being that a monolith (traditional meaning being a large single block of stone) is coming making us one capitalist, homogenuous world. Also, some espionage writers such as John Le Carre often use the word monolith to describe large intelligence agencies such as the CIA and the post-war merged M.I. groups in the UK.

"permission was hinted" - Newspapers, T.V. stations, rely on advertising to support themselves. And therefore these media outlets are unlikely to run stories which will upset their sponsors. The companies don't actualy stop the media from publishing bad stories about them, but the threat of taking their business elsewhere is always there. A form of censorship, do you think?

"is it heavier than air" - The truth carries a lot of weight? 'The truth shall set ye free'? Maybe I'm clutching at straws here though...

But anyway, that was kinda long-winded. Sorry about that.
