| I don’t think that he is speaking of a failed relationship in this song. I think he is speaking from the perspective of a girl looking for clarity, looking for meaning, and going in search of God. The significance of the song being titled A Sunday, holds a lot of value. I think he is telling a story through the eyes of a young girl in search of herself. “what you wish for won’t come true”. I think this statement is saying that the girl in this “story” realizes that you cannot wish to God. To get what you want, you must have an active relationship with him. He does not respond to wishes, only prayers. I don’t think that there was a drive that took thirty six hours. I believe that the girl in search of God was trying to make sense of something in her life, and she spent 36 hours contemplating the thought in solitude, thus the drive symbolizing a train of thought. I think she is trying to reverse a decision that she made, and now since she spent so long thinking about it, and wishing for a different outcome from God, realizing that he would not grant it to her, she now has 36 less hours to change her course of action. She realizes that she can’t wish for things to change from God, she either has to form a relationship with him in which she can pray to him and seek forgiveness, or live with that. I think that this girl in which the song speaks of knows that there is more to life, but she is not getting it because she is making wrong decisions. So on the last Sunday that she is thinking about the situation she is placed in, she goes over it all in her mind one last time. (Go once around) She knows that if her life ended today, the hopes and dreams that she had did not come true. “Because when the rides done, the hopes that you have carried, they fall out from your hands back to the ground.” I think this is the realization that she comes to that she is not fulfilling her life. She can choose to change that, or live with that. The decisions she is making involve drugs, and she is learning that they will not help her, she is suffering loss because of them, she knows that the loss will continue if she keeps living on in this way. The haze clears from her eyes on a Sunday. After thinking over and over about her situation, about living, drugs, loss.. after spending so much time thinking about it all, it becomes clear to her that she is living life wrong and the haze clears. What makes a good artist is one who can write a song that touches every listener deeply, and in a way they can relate to. This is exactly what happens in Table for Glasses. This song I think was written for himself, not for anyone else's benefit of listening, but to clarify things for himself. The dirtied dress in the song I think is a metaphor. It symbolizes the relationship that he was in. At one time, the dress was a beautiful thing, well fitted and worn perfectly. In time, the dress became dirtied, symbolizing the deterioration of their relationship. The relationship headed on a doward spiral so quickly that there was not even time to make sense of what had happened. In this midst of this rapid downfall, there was no time to even rectify what went wrong in the first place, there was no time to even reflect upon the good times and decide to end things, it just happened. This is why the song is. It is made to clarify what happened. "Not asking of me anything, saying nothing about what it means, without anybody telling me how I should feel" This part of the song reiterates the idea that the song was only written for him. The girl in the relationship asks nothing of what the song means, he tells nothing of what it means, and is writing it for his own benefit. Notice he asks for no advice or asks questions in the song because he does not want to be told what to feel. He just wants to feel what he feels, led by his skeptic sight. |
