Oliver Cromwell was the leader of the Roundheads, the group that opposed King Charles I during the British Civil War (don't know if it's referred to as the English or British, but I'm pretty sure it affected Wales and Scotland). Thereafter, the monarchy that was reinstated (with the exception of Charles II and James II) were Protestant, and, by extension, anti-Catholic.
