| Drive Like Jehu – Do You Compute? Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Agreed with thegreatcreator Don't get me wrong. I love ATDI... but Drive Like Jehu didn't even partially remind me of them. Hell, I didn't even realize DLJs songs were all that complex til someone pointed it out. If it's consider Math rock, it's definitely a band that's more interested in making a song than being mathrock. |

| Drive Like Jehu – Super Unison Lyrics | 13 years ago |
(and immediately after, I found it...) Ready ready to let you in Up with the mob Ready ready to let you in Up with the mob It ain't no accident that We're better off You're set to inherit What I got You put a nail in my hands You put a nail in my hands Ready ready to let you in Ready ready to let you in Ready ready to let you in Ready ready to LET YOU IN! Yeah keep the herd in check Or be absorbed, that's all, that's all Yeah that'll happen next And who'll be there to write you off What's left intact Better pollute that mind Slip with the masses Slip with the mass! Maybe I've been cloned Don't let that man Inside your home Wasn't me that phoned Don't let that man Inside your home Wasn't me that phoned... |
| Drive Like Jehu – Super Unison Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I wish someone would put the rest of the lyrics up. So, I'll try. anyone else, help patch up the hatchet job I'm about to do. WHAT's THERE? ???? ????? ? (this whole line, ends with) crime. Some with the masses, Some with ?????????? Maybe I've been cloned, Don't let that man inside your home. It wasn't me that phoned. Don't let that man inside your home. It wasn't me that phoned. It wasn't me that phoned. (yeah, that was a pretty bad job, I could not make that out) |

| Dillinger Four – I Was Born On A Pirate Ship (holdyourtongue) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Duh, its about getting drunk in the face of a life/night thats gone horribly. I quote this song too often. | |
| Propagandhi – Purina Hall Of Fame Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Let me help out here. Too bad the tributes paid to lives that relegate these thrones to lives spent valuing the runners-up, are known to be neither fleeting nor desirable. ----- I'm actually kind of confused with his wording here. Someone help me out. The lives of people who support animal rights are not the lives envied by others. Its a line pointing out that animal rights supporters are usually looked down upon by the majority of society. I mean, you only have to look at the recent "Baconator" *vomit* commercials for Wendy's, talking about being a meatatarian to see this kind of wrong thinking being propagated across the media in this country. I'm not even a vegetarian and it makes me ill when I see that kind of nonsensical crap. |
| Propagandhi – Rock For Sustainable Capitalism Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| are you sure Potemkin is on Fat Wreck? I know some of the online discographys say it is, but I think it was released through G7 Welcoming Comittee. | |
| At the Drive-In – Proximus Centauri Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| wow, that makes alot of sense now that I read it over. It seems to me that he's drawing a parallel to screwed up societies of the past in allegory to the societies today. | |
| Strung Out – Kill Your Scene Lyrics | 18 years ago |
ok, problem with that theory, BoyAfraid is that that trend was barely beginning to catch when this cd came out. it hadn't really even begun to hit when they started recording. And seriously, who writes darker lyrics than Jason. (see Katatonia) Look, I know we love to remember Jim in the best ways possible, but he was human, and he and Jason weren't on the best of terms at that time. I'm not saying it definitely is about him, but it kind of fits the bill. just because feelings are one way now, doesn't mean they always were. |
| Descendents – Thank You Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| alot of people get into music just because of one person who inspired them. I'm betting this was written about someone who really inspired him. I know there are musicians I feel this way about, so I'm not sure there's any further meaning that needs found. Milo's fairly straightforward almost always. | |
| Bad Religion – Dearly Beloved Lyrics | 18 years ago |
to elaborate on what mr.square is saying, I read an interview lately from Greg, and Brett and the rest, and they mentioned that this album is more introspection into themselves versus, the normal looking outward. I think Square is totally right, but I think that possibly the group he's referring to is society in general. mainly, that moment you finally separate yourself from the herd and figure out that lemmings running through their life with prescribed futures isn't for everyone, or really anyone. |
| Strung Out – Party in the Hills Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I don't think Strung Out was meant as a positive term, even back then. and I think Jason has alot of regret on his own drug use? it really seems that way to me. Also its kind of a common thing in punk rock (where they started) to name your band something strikingly negative. (ie. Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys, Choking Victim, JFA (Jodie Fosters Army, personally one of my favorite namings.. its about assassinating a president) et al) |
| Strung Out – Blackhawks Over Los Angeles Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I dunno, I thought the idea was that the blackhawks (a US helicopter) were the US Govt finally attacking its own people. the idea being that the US Citizens are being called terrorists for speaking out cracking down on free speech and such. |
| The Mars Volta – L'Via L'Viaquez Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| ok.. I don't think L'Via is Cygnus's Aunt.. thats a bit of a stretch, because that would make Miranda, Cygnus's Grandma, and in the course of the story, partially too removed to make any sense in context? | |
| The Mars Volta – Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I'd bet instead of Boy prepare yourself, it was meant more in the context of an infant, being that Nino can be used to mean a baby boy. The last section, seems more to me to be himself explaining how he (Cygnus) can feel the "cut" "sweat" under his "blanket". in other words, something nagging at him deeply, contrary to what he's doing at that point. Either, fear of finding the truth, or fear or not finding the truth, I'm not entirely sure. |
| Dillinger Four – Let Them Eat Thomas Paine Lyrics | 21 years ago |
I have a live version where he says its about them building a baseball statium in (detroit?) I know the same thing happened here in pittsburgh, alot of people were pissed, we payed for it, they gained. |
| Strung Out – Scarecrow Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I agree, although Jackie-o is starting to wear thin on me. (it HAS been about 4 years I've had the cd though) | |
| Strung Out – Lubricating The Revolution Lyrics | 21 years ago |
its a play on a cliche'd phrase sort of. "Looking out for number one", which basically means looking out for yourself above anyone or anything else. Brilliant song. |
| Strung Out – Katatonia Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I thought it was more about starting to hate someone you love and ripping yourself up about it. (not necessarily in regret, but more in what you've lost) | |
| Bad Religion – I Want to Conquer the World Lyrics | 21 years ago |
wow, vampirella, I could not possibly disagree with you more. you have to remember this is punkrock, not .. well whatever Tool is classified as now (I know they were metal, but they seem to have transcended that genre sort of) Personally I think of Greg as one of the most brilliant lyricists and one of the best vocalists punk has ever had. (Jason Cruz from Strung Out too) |
| The Mars Volta – This Apparatus Must Be Unearthed Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I kind of had the idea that this was a part of the hallucination, that it revolved more around an event in the story that symbolism of any kind. (I could always be wrong though, haven't gotten the book yet) | |
| The Mars Volta – Cicatriz ESP Lyrics | 21 years ago |
wow. ok 2 things.. This song isn't about A. ATDI's breakup. B. Hatred for (aww crap, what's that label... ) I can't remember, but its not that. And if you've ever seen them perform live, the lyrics are never the same, they make up songs sometimes too, there are a number of their live performances you can download online, its like a freeflowing musicspree. Oh the second thing ... Julio did NOT kill himself at their band practice. I have no idea where you got that information, but its flat out wrong. |
| The Mars Volta – Eriatarka Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| .... vaya came out first? Kid B, what are you talking about... if I remember right Vaya came out before Julio died. And it is based on the book. Thats pretty much well defined fact. | |
| The Mars Volta – Drunkship of Lanterns Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| can someone who read the book give their take on this song, I still haven't gotten it yet. alot of the references seem blurred to me. | |
| The Mars Volta – Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of) Lyrics | 21 years ago |
there are mentions of the trinity too, past present and future. I think the breakdown part where the song sort of comes apart in the middle, is the transition between awake and comatose. |
| The Mars Volta – Inertiatic ESP Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| black wing is pretty much dead on, you people have to realize that the fiction written by cedric and what actually happened to Julio didn't exactly fit together perfectly, just for the most part. If I remember right, Julio did rat poisoning, Cedric, through possibly not wanting to disparage his friend too much, changed it to morphine for the book. Just a guess. | |
| The Mars Volta – Televators Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| "I give up" ... isn't it a little... messed up to be bragging about living near the bridge Julio killed himself from? | |
| At the Drive-In – Pattern Against User Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| yeah, but dedication really means nothing. My take on it was always both, drugs and oppression of elders, but looking at it, I'd imagine that I was wrong on the elders part. and for that guy above, One Armed Scissor is almost definitely not about space travel. and your intellect is showing in your capitalization. (noone attack my bad punctuation) :) | |
| At the Drive-In – Rolodex Propaganda Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| oh I see, if I can elaborate, I think it has something to do with the winners writing history. I'll add that its fairly naive to believe that wars are always won by the side of right. I think we're slowly remedying that in society, but.. that might just be because my circle of friends is fairly awake. | |
| At the Drive-In – Proximus Centauri Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| ahhh that makes sense. I kind of wondered, if you take it at face value though, it can be pretty inspirational for a sci fi story, I tried to write it, but I'm not good at that type of writing. | |
| At the Drive-In – 198d Lyrics | 21 years ago |
I'm getting slightly sick of all the people who say "ooo this song is about their band falling apart too" look at it rationally, they can't write every single song about the band falling apart even so far from when they actually broke up. I read a quote from cedric a little while after they broke up saying "well, we just felt that we'd exhausted the medium, we'd done all we could do in that format" and I don't think there'd be songs about breaking the band up back on Vaya. (which I'll go with everyone else, I think it might be their best cd) |
| At the Drive-In – Heliotrope Lyrics | 21 years ago |
hmm I could go with healthcare or death penalty on this one.. lemme reread. (purely literary motive) looking at it, it seems more towards healthcare, the theives quote doesn't seem to work so well with death penalty. "taking rations from the ballot box" probably a reference to the fact that the people pay for it. |
| At the Drive-In – Alpha Centauri Lyrics | 21 years ago |
I'd go with the Vietnam connection on this one, matadors chase a bull in the china shop. Matador = US China Shop = The mess that was Vietnam Bull in a China Shop = already a mess Matador chasing said bull? = Makes it much worse. |
| At the Drive-In – One Armed Scissor Lyrics | 21 years ago |
I'm pretty sure someone broke this open with the suicide one. I heard an interview later where they mention writing a song about suicide. I'd imagine this was it. Alot of the mentions of machinery are referencing human parts that have no meaning anymore, since its about to end. One Armed Scissor, did anyone realize that a one armed scissor is a knife? anyway, I'm casting my vote, I can't believe so many people are lauding Sparta, they kind of rubbed me as a more pop version of ATDI, personally I'm for Mars Volta |
| At the Drive-In – Cosmonaut Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| action hank, you might be on to something there, "is it heavier than air" could refer to airbrushing" I always took this song to be feeling completely and totally alone, that everything in this world has made everyone different from the individual and that its easy to be alone if you're you... that made no sense, hopefully someone can translate what I meant to say there for me, since I botched it. | |
| At the Drive-In – Chanbara Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| alot of people make the mistake of reading emo into ATDI I think, I've never heard a song of theirs that could be related to love, well except the 10th song on this cd (just got the cd, haven't looked at the track listing) "kiss me with the lisp of your shrapnel caress" is almost definitely metaphoric.. his lyrics tend to completely defy taking him literally. | |
| At the Drive-In – Arcarsenal Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I could be wrong given the dahmer angle, but I always took this song to be about tyranny, not necessarily saddam, quite possibly the US, althought they've stated post this cd, that they're apolitical. I think its about abuse of power personally. | |
| BoySetsFire – Abominations Of Those Virtuous Lyrics | 21 years ago |
I have to agree with blove on this one, personally I was a lead singer in a band too, I've never looked at it as a spotlight thing though, in fact I have stagefright for anything else, the whole point for me was that playing music is something I enjoy, and getting a message across seems to be fairly important in a society that tends to like to close its eyes. I have to admit, this song did make me reflect on myself in that regard, anything that makes you question yourself is good, if you're wrong, change if you can, if you're right, you've reinforced yourself. I don't think this is about all bands, I got the feeling its about a specific person, with a message that applies to many. I hope not me, but we're all horribly fallible. |
| Pedro the Lion – When They Really Get to Know You They Will Run Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I'm going with smithskid84 on this, I don't really believe this song is supposed to be poking fun at anything, it seems, like alot of his songs to be darker, I've never understood how people take biting sarcasm for humor or in his case, an uplifting christian method, I'm not entirely sure that he's not questioning it from the outside of it. I guess I picked this song to hash this out. I think alot of people are taking this as cautious warning instead of outright criticism. I could be wrong, but I don't hear it. | |
| Burning Airlines – Wheaton Calling Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I know.. hardly anyone listens to Burning Airlines, its sad. I've met only 1 person in my whole life (personally, not counting online) that listened to them. | |
| Burning Airlines – Election-night Special Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| Politicians never do anything good, you can wait and wait, but its the mother money that is their master. (MBW) | |
| Burning Airlines – Pacific 231 Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I kind of thought this song went along with Paper crowns in a way, sort of that, you could have it all, if you were just what people wanted you to be, and saying its almost a dream that he'd learn to love being what he's not. | |
| Burning Airlines – Paper Crowns Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I always took it to mean being happy in the underground, being content with never selling out, but admitting that if you sold out, maybe it wouldn't matter. Paper Crowns being a representation of pride in not going big. | |
| Burning Airlines – Outside The Aviary Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| Wondering if he's still going to be able to be ok being someone other than what she thought he should be. it seems almost sarcastic. but its hard for me to tell. (I'm probably wrong on this one.) | |
| Burning Airlines – The Escape Engine Lyrics | 21 years ago |
yes it definitely is. I think its a metaphor to a dying relationship as an astronaut forgotten in space waiting to die. Where I got that from is, that it could all just be a story, but in that, these lines seem to represent something more personal. the code that we spoken is broken beyond repair and i dont care spin into the black or plumet burning to the sea but either way i wont believe a word ...you send to me |
| Burning Airlines – The Deluxe War Baby Lyrics | 21 years ago |
Wow, noone has taken on Burning Airlines on here yet really. I think he's basically explaining that everything in our society is forcing us to believe we should be like Hollywood, and you'll never escape, but if you look at the bigger picture there's really no reinforcement of that in life. I love how it bounces between sarcasm and straightforwardness. |
| Pavement – Shady Lane Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| An extra in the sequel to your life (ie, a person crying at her funeral) thats brilliant, I hadn't thought of it that way, really good job. | |
| Pavement – Cut Your Hair Lyrics | 21 years ago |
I'm going with feinstein on this, thats what I always thought it was. I don't remember what, doesn't really fit. |
| Dillinger Four – The Great American Going Out Of Business Sale Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| My favorite D4 song. there's a flag on my website, upside down, red white and black, inspired by this song. | |
| Dillinger Four – Maximum Piss And Vinagar Lyrics | 21 years ago |
actually, I think its about Maximum Rock n Roll.. (ie Maximum Piss and Vinegar) the zine got fairly bitter towards nearly everyone toward the precorporate times of it. |
| Strung Out – Matchbook Lyrics | 21 years ago |
thats what kind of confused me on it (we covered this song for a while, its hard to play fast) I think either something to do with matches burning faster. or the old idea that you leave a matchbook with your hotel's name on it. either, as a method of cheating or hooking up, but that doesn't make sense in this song very well. |
