This song seems very melancholy and I don't think that it directly involves a relationship like people have been saying. I think that one of the two in the relationship died. It makes sense throughout the whole song. "I'll sing it one last time for you, then we really have to go. You've been the only thing that's right, in all I've done." He's saying in his or her whole life, she was the only good decision he made. "I know we'll make it anywhere, away from here." They'll be together again in death. "Light up, light up, as if you have a choice, even if you cannot hear my voice; I'll be right beside you dear." Here I think he is saying don't let what happened bring you down because there was no choice in what happened, and even though they cannot communicate between one of them living and one being dead they'll always be together. "To think I might not see those eyes, makes it so hard not to cry. and as we say our long goodbyes, I nearly do." Obviously proving again that one of them has passed away. The whole song, the lyrics, the music, the slow somber beat, all suggests death. |

I'm actually listening to this song right now...it's depressing. I think this song is either about what knowdy2k2 said. That his girlfriend is too critical of everything. I never thought of it this way until now. " I'll grow old and start acting my age. I'll be a brand new day in a life that you hate. A crown of gold, a heart thats harder than stone but it hurts a whole lot and its missed when its gone. " She has a hard heart, but whenever he tries to break free she won't let him, he misses her too much. If you notice after he says, "So call it quits or get a grip. You say you wanted a solution, you just wanted to be missed." it's almost like he is realizing what's going on, (again like knowdy2k2 said above,) but then after he starts realizing it, the song becomes more powerful. Like he is trying to tell himself that it's not true. |

Whoa, I just had a totally different view of this song...Ok...it might be about the two having relationship problems..which is obvious. But maybe she is having some sort of problem dealing with herself, like for example image problems. And he is trying to help her, but she's taking all her pain out on him and making him worthless. Maybe because she is denying that she even has a problem. These are some lines that back up my interpretation: "It's cold as a tomb and its dark in your room when I sneak to your bed to pour salt on your wounds." while she's in a "dark" place he tries to help her... "let your beauty unfold. Pale white like the skin stretched over your bones. Spring keeps you ever close, you are second hand smoke. You are so fragile and thin," sounds like she's sick and thin. "skin stretched over your bones" and the reference to second hand smoke could be that she is hurting herself, just as a smoker would; but in the process her problem is hurting him. "Holding on to yourself the best you can. You are the smell before rain, you are the blood in my veins. " She is "holding onto herself" trying to hide her problem. And he is telling her how important she is. How much she means. I dunno, my other thought on this song is better. This was just a thought. |

Actually I heard this song is kind of a "stalker" love song. I recently saw one of those VH1 shows where bands clarify the meanings of songs and R.E.M said they wanted a sort of stalker song like Sting had with his song, "Every breath you take." It makes sense too. Look at the lyrics. "There's me in the corner, there's me in the spolight." and ""Every whisper Of every waking hour I'm Choosing my confessions Trying to keep an eye on you Like a hurt lost and blinded fool Oh no I've said too much I set it up" |

| Just a point, if you notice after reading Kurt cobain's journals, the music video for, " my hero " seems like something that Kurt would have made up comparing that video to the ideas for some Nirvana videos in his journals. Just thought it was kinda interesting. | |

| This is a really depressing song. I can't be sure of what I think it means, but, I think it at least has something to do with maybe her cheating on him. Hence, " burning like a flame inside of you. " and then he's beating himself up for staying with her, figuring it's his fault he is hurting. Because he says, ' so shame on me for the ruse...the blues. " He keeps telling himself that he'll stick it out and he won't get tired of the situation. and another reason I think it's about cheating is because he says, " one more boy for hire, one more boy to lend a hand to you. | I think that this song is about a relationship that isn't going very well. When he says, " And the situation wasn't quite as intense as I thought." I think it meant that he was very deeply into the relationship and suddenly it hit him that she doesn't feel the same in it. And how he's using opposite comparisons. Such as " my savior, my razor. " I think this shows how even though he loves her, she's not good for him. | |
