I compare this to Something Vague. Lyrically and musically he has progressed since then, but there is still that feeling of loss. It's great. As far as "goddamn hypocrite" goes, he has suicidal tendencies, and it's ironic he is prayin he won't die after a night of self destructive behavior. That's my two cents. He's really a great writer and this song is proof. I liked everyone's comments about this song. Just proves his audience is as amazing as he is. |

He's older...but Sara is still fresh in his mind. At what point do you give up on passion and love? He's been there, done that and everyone asks the same damned questions over and over. It's a beautiful song with powerful words, no doubt in that. It must be hard for him when he gives us all so much and god couldn't give him the one thing he wanted most; his love. He's just a man and he needs and wants like the rest of us. He has seen more and been more than most of us dream, but Sara isn't there. He was foolish and he knows it. This is a man on the brink of giving up. BUT, there is still a fire in his soul and a love in his heart. eek...too deep for me. Many apologies =) |

These boards and the Bob Dylan boards are so intelligent. You guys have such great comments. Ok, on to my opinion; This is about two lovers who never loved each other at the same time. They have such strong feelings for one another but they always show up a little late in reciprocating that love. "Besides, maybe this time is different I mean, I really think you like me" They were always so selfish and now, after a journey without each other, have come to realize they are "boomerangs" (re: "You Will..."). There is also the line- "But I'd rather be working for a paycheck Than waiting to win the lottery " Leading me to think- "Ok, yeah, we have to TRY in this relationship but it's better than searching for something fake and easy and has a good chance of never happening.". After all, don't you cherish something that you work for rather than have it given to you? Finally, the words - "So I thought I'd let you know That these things take forever, I am especially slow But I realized how I need you And I wondered if I could come home" He spent the previous verses professing his love. Sort of an embarassing moment where before he was so vulnerable with his heart, now he feels the need to retract his feelings and apologize in his own way. Look at the word "home" and its context in the paragraph. He is in a moment of realization and wants to reach out and grab what he knows he neglected in the first place. Bah! I could go on analyzing but it's a beautiful song and the meaning could just be he felt the words fit well and were nothing more than that =p I really enjoy reading these posts. You guys should get in on some of the Dylan songs too. |

This song is about making love. Not about weed. But, however it makes you feel is what you can take away from it. If it makes you feel like smoking weed then go for it. Same goes for making love. Personally, please don't knock on my door if you hear this song playing; I am not smoking any weed. ;) |

Whenever I need to find a way to say "I'm sorry." or "I love you." I can always turn to Dylan. This song seems to express how I feel at certain time without being trite, redundant, or too complex. At 3:10 it sure does fit quite a lot of feelings and emotion in to a small amount of time. |

This whole album reminds me of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" in that it is all tied together and has an "epic" feel. This song, in particular, reminds me of "Nobody Home". Where it has an introspective view of things while also communicating feelings everyone can relate to. "Once the page of a calendar is turned it's no more. So tell me then what was it for?" A rhetorical question only a person can answer for themselves. Brilliant way to end a song. This was the first Bright Eyes song I had ever heard and this album has only left my playlist for "Lifted..". If I could have only one album to listen to ever agin then this is it. |

In lstening to the Rhodes piano you might be convinced this song is simple. And it is. Deceptively simple. He has so much talent with words and music I am constantly thumping my forehead saying, "Why didn't I think of that?!". He makes such a Sesame Street-like piano riff sound so wonderful. What a badass. |

Wow. It's so good to see so many people feeling as strongly as I do about this beautiful song. I cry EVERY single time I listen to it. No matter where I am, as soon as he belts out "There's a dream in my brain..." I start to scream along. My favorite part is somwhere in between where it begins and ends. It really reminds me of Sly and the Family Stone's "If You Want Me To Stay" So powerful...just...Wow... |

I would have to agree with most of the statements everyone has already made. To me, the song takes on a whole new meaning when listened to with the rest of the album. I get a sense of hope and closure. Where the Fevers and Mirrors album seemed depressing and hopeless this album comes in and lets you know that things will be OK. I think this song is the perfect example of how Conor can take a seemingly hopeless situation and turn it into something quite the opposite. It all comes to a close with that lo-fi to studio sound that Biscuits mentioned. Brilliant. |
