Joy Division – Transmission Lyrics | 17 years ago |
just to continue with why i thought it was "life transmission": he's not romanticizing the silence, the night, or being frightened by the sun as some of you seem to think. the radio, is in fact, chasing the darkness away. And we would go on as though nothing was wrong. And hide from these days we remained all alone. Staying in the same place, just staying out the time. Touching from a distance, Further all the time. It's the radio, and going out to the show, and dancing, and the music that chases all the darkness away. without the radio, we never would have known that something was wrong with just going through the motions in the dark. |

Built to Spill – Kicked It in the Sun Lyrics | 19 years ago |
While I think there are probably a few ways to read this, my personal interpretation is that it's a song about love lost. He's moved on now (it's alright, I'm getting over getting mine), but he's still ruminating about what could have been, if only she hadn't, well, kicked it in the sun. It could be about lost opportunity in the music biz too, sure. It's just that the beginning seems so intimate, it strikes me as being about love. |

Hmm. I just got back from Vieques...also known as the Island of Enchantment. And I do believe that Frank Black spent a bunch of time in Puerto Rico. BTW, Vieques is a very nice place. Get there before the hotels move in. |
New Order – Thieves Like Us Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I'm assuming this song is referencing the Robert Altman movie of the same title in an oblique sort of way. The glorified version of love peddled and exalted by the media is a sham. Love is grittier, more raw, and leaves you exposed. One other note: I've always heard that couplet near the end of the song as: "Love is the cure for every evil/ Love is the air that supports the ego" I guess eagle actually rhymes but ego fits for me on a personal level. |

Damn. For someone so convinced he's right, you're pretty wrong -- it *is* painted, not impregnated. If you'd stop looking for the painfully literal, you'd note that "he took his sister from his head", i.e, he's fantasizing about her. |
