The Smiths – This Charming Man Lyrics 21 years ago
Chloe Le Fay's meaning of this song is absolutely right.

I find it really charming how Ben Gibbard of death cab messes up the lyrics of the song in their cover. Every time I hear someone sing this song, they mess up the lyrics.

Thrice – Hoods On Peregrine Lyrics 21 years ago
WillBill is pretty much on the money.

I just wanted to add, I think the Blue Light lyric is referring to television. If you ever look at a room with a TV on and the lights off, the light from the TV generally looks blue. He's saying we believe anything the T.V. tells

Thrice – T & C Lyrics 21 years ago
Like someone else said, this song is named after the game T&C Surf and Skate ( i think thats the title. ). If you play the game, the music thats playing is also the main riff of this song.

Thrice – Paper Tigers Lyrics 21 years ago
This song, like a lot of other by Thrice is an abstract criticism of Society, specifically American society. It is about how all of our criticism, crusading, and involvement in other countries will come back to haunt us.

Paper tiger (from the dictionary): one that is outwardly powerful or dangerous but inwardly weak or ineffectual. Meaning that America is strong militarily, but on the inside we're weak.

I had always believed this song was about how America's criticism of the world and imperialism will be our downfall in the end, but I never caught the September 11 reference until reading you all's responses. Good job guys. I just realized how the last line is referring to how the September 11 victims paid with their lifes for the crimes of our politicions.

Thrice – See You in the Shallows Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is about a choice and going along with the masses. I think what choice that is, is beyond the scope the author intended for the song, but I really doubt it was *meant* to specifically be about suicide.

The cliff he is standing on is a metaphor for the decision he is going to make. Jumping off will be going through with the choice. Whatever choice he is making is one that many people have gone through, ('This cliff has been well worn by ignorance', meaning its worn down by the ignorant masses who have also made this choice), and he is struggling with the decision.

He is mentally justifying ‘jumping’ to himself: 'It looks deep enough from here', 'There cant be blood in the water here, its far too blue' is him justifying his decision by wishful thinking. Even his friends have gone through with the decision: “and down below I see my crew they look okay”. That line disproves this song is about suicide, because his ‘crew’ has done it, and they wouldn’t be okay if they had killed themselves.

In the end, driven by the peer pressure to do whatever his ‘crew’ and others have also done, and having justified his actions in his head, he goes through with the choice: “It looks deep enough from here, I’m diving”.

Ultimately, whatever choice he is making is a bad one: “they’re starving for the air
for a bone to break , a dream to smash apart” but he goes through with it anyway. I personally think that the song is about the choice to do drugs, simply because it is one thing that nearly everyone has done, is laden with peer pressure, and is a bad decision But like I said before, what the choice is about is obviously left vague on purpose, because the song is about making choices, not whatever choice he had to make.

The Shins – Gone For Good Lyrics 21 years ago
The speaker is explaining how he wants to leave his girlfriend/wife after a year of being together. I think they are just married, perhaps engaged, since he mentions his vows and the ring. I think he's struggled with the decision because he doesnt want to hurt her feelings but has finally worked up the courage. He is telling her to go home and forget abot him because he is too fleeting to be in love with her. In the end, he feels better for being honest and getting his true feelings out in the open.

I can totally relate to this song, because sometimes it's really hard to share your true feelings. In the end though, its better to be honest even if it does hurt the other person.
