| Fiona Apple – Oh Well Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I was at a concert in Saratoga, CA on July 3rd 2006, and Fiona explained this song (along with a funny story)... She was dating a guy at the time (one would assume Paul Thomas Anderson), who then cheated on her with a very pretty, very famous "starlet". Fiona was, of course, massively upset... and at the time, this girl was starring in a movie so her picture was everywhere, magazine covers, TV screens, everywhere. So Fiona was going to buy a box radio with her brother, just for some reason or another... but on her way to the store, everywhere she turned was this girl. Newsstands, billboards, everywhere Fiona turned the girl was there. Fiona was getting more and more upset, to the point where she just couldn't stop sobbing. When she finally reached the store, she was feeling better; but this electronics store was one which had walls taken up entirely by dozens of TV's. And at the exact moment Fiona walked in, every single TV in the store was showing the face of the girl. Fiona looked at her brother, and for just a small, tiny, one second window, they were able to laugh... just for a second. Until, well... yeah. After the story, right before Fiona began to play the song, she said, "And being the inspiration for this song may be the only decent thing this girl has ever done." |

I believe a lot of people are misreading the "Did I say that I loathe you/Did I say that I want you to leave it all behind?" Note that the girl is singing this back to him. What's happening is Damien is emoting to this girl so powerfully, and really implicit in all this is, look at this pain you're causing me, look how much I care for you and how much this is destroying me. He's basically mocking her; he's saying "we'll both forget the breeze", not "it's okay, you're right." And at the culmination of all this, all this accusing and taking the heat, what can the girl say? except, "Did I say that I loath you?" Did I say I want to hurt you? When did that happen? And did I say that I really want to forget the breeze and "want you to just leave it all behind?" No, Damien responds. But... well... "I can't get my mind off of you. I can't get my mind off of you." And the last line, the most painful, meaningful part of the song, turns the song from romantic romp to truthful reality, "till I find somebody new." |

A couple things; after several listens, one can clearly tell that the primary singer is Thom. I also have about 12 live recordings, all of which are very clearly Thom. Ed being listed as Voice could probably be attributed to the accompanying vocals ("Ooooooooo... Oooooooo...") beginning with the "No no no, no no no"'s. I've also read that to Thom, this is just a collection of nightmares. Not 'just', but that's the jist of it. I have no doubts that there's more, but when you approach it like that, you can accept the song as it is more than feeling like you have to come up with a meaning for every part. I also like the interpretation of it just being pure hell because of the way the instrumentals work too; it's not really about a linear progression, but really it's more atmospheric than anything. All the instruments (within the first 20 seconds we are already introduced to 6 instruments, not including Thom) with their hypnotic theme are used more for atmosphere and submersion than linear building. |
