No, Tom Waits himself states that this song is about a friend calling him up in the middle of the night asking for gas money so he could drive the girl he was out with on a date back to her house. The car was in such bad shape that it only had reverse left on it so the friend sold Tom some jokes he could use in exchange for money so he could buy some gas to drive his date home. Tom claims the car was either a '55 Buick Roadmaster or Cadillac and his friend actually drove home all the way in reverse.. If you read the lyrics it all makes sense. |

I agree with mkilby to some extent, but I believe that the "black eye" is more of a symbolic meaning. I think the persons "black eye" is more his reputation. He prided himself in being somebody who everbody knew when he was younger and everybody knew him, but maybe not in an entirely good way. Then, he got older and more mature and everybody still remembers him for who he was when he was younger, even though he has changed, and he can't and doesn't want it to be like that. Kind of like if you have a brother or a parent who is notorious, and everybody assumes you to be the same way even though you are completely different. Just my take on things. |

I think this one's about an old friend or an old flame, who the years have been tough for, coming to visit. The old acquaintance sees the person they have come to visit and how he has a family now and is happy, where when they knew each other long ago this scenario would be the last thing one could imagine for him. The person then realizes that even though that at one time, maybe even up until they got to the house that living this idea was still crazy, but once the person sees the children playing with their father, a sort of epiphany is reached and the person now longs for this same type of life. |
