Bob Seger – Turn The Page Lyrics 15 years ago
This song was released in 1973, heavy metal wasn't topping the charts. Seger had long hair back then. It was part of his rock star persona. If he's driving through conservative rural Omaha I'd imagine he would get some looks sitting in a restaurant.

correction for my above post. spin.com reported the song as being an account of racisim and generally had good things to say about the band.

Two Gallants – Long Summer Day Lyrics 19 years ago
pitchfork, spin, and some other publications blasted this album and song for being racists. music is one of the last mediums where artists can still truly write without fear of having to water everything down to appease the masses. its sad pitchfork is so wrapped up in their own sense of what musicians can and can't do that artists are bastardize for it.

The Blood Brothers – Trash Flavored Trash Lyrics 19 years ago
sounds like their experiance living in a city along with the theme of the media's trashiness that reoccurs on the album. most of the lyrics they write dont seem to be about one specific experience or story. alot of this stuff is subjectable.

"I spent 22 years in this zoo of broken faces.
The parents, the school children"
that expression of the concrete juggle.

"There's a girl behind bars,
milk abandoned cars."
hooker hand jobs maybe?

"A piano wire vine, men in the pines"
power lines in the pine trees running threw the city. power workers up there fixing them.

"Take me to the pit of celebrity pregnancy!
I want to wear the skin of a magazine, baby!
the five o'clock news is fucking fantasy!"
moving to the theme of the media and all that eff-ed up imagery of popular culture. celebrity news on the tv. girls wishing the looked like the girls in magazines.

"I stole the rice from the beggars death bowl.
in this zoo of broken faces."
beggars around the city. maybe they wish they could help or feel bad about not doing anything.

"I told a widow that she was beautiful,
when half of her smile was missing."
either this lady was sad or she had half of her teeth knocked out from her last relationship. (what do you tell a woman with 2 black eyes?) :o

"and I've done my addition:
gun plus gun equals bang bang bang .
and I've done my division:
trash into trash equals trash flavored trash."
people with gun = violence. then im assuming their talking about 2 trashy people having a child will have a child whos just like them.

"There's a housewife in a cage
that vacuums all day."
another example of the trashy lifestyle in this place.

The Blood Brothers – Peacock Skeleton with Crooked Feathers Lyrics 19 years ago
the album was released in 2004 about a year or so after we invaded iraq. i could be wrong but given the time frame im going to guess thats what its about. the song plays out more like a movie jumping from scene to scene painting some picture of destruction or whatever message the bb are trying to get across.

"Which peacock is beast? Which peacock is priest?"
the 2 peacocks seem to be the media and the president which we couldn't stop hearing about after the war in iraq.

"I just want to know what your feathers are made out of.
Is it bruises or roses or cradles or coffins? (It's all those!)"
maybe here were talking about the presidents suit. is he a good man giving life or taking it with a war in the middle east?

"If your friends are all cripple, all wither, all wilt,
and you smile at their pain on your angel bone stilts."
bush getting some kind of sick satisfaction out of the war?

"If the brick you throw puts a bullet in your skull
and a police boot lands atop your gaping jaw?"
people in iraq defending their way of life. throwing a rock points to a civilian in some kind of protest. obviously, the boot, americas presence in iraq.

"Which peacock's police? Which peacock is thief?"
is our presence in iraq trying to keep piece helpful, or are we just thiefs taking what we need. oil, money, ect.

"If machine guns come knock, knock, knocking
Who's cashing out your bad luck?"
once again america cashing in on the war in iraq, but the price is the war and suffering we put on innocent people.

"If wedding bells sound like death knells baby"
nfi.

"is a wealthy groom worth all this gloom?"
reference to bush.

"If tuxedos slither off corpses"
bush is just creating corpses with his war.

"and copulate wild on wedding cake
and the priest starts snapping photos?"
i love this part. bush jacking off on the people of iraq, the cake: their prized oil, and the media taking pictures in some sick perverted act of exploitation. this also indicates the media is the priest peacock and our president the beast.

"There's a peacock on your shoulder
pole dancing around your neck
while reciting the Book of Revelation."
the media, like our conscious, stuffing our head full of bush's garbage. the bible is either a creation of bush or the media.

"So who do you love?
Who do you trust when your friends take a match to your front lawn?"
who are the people of iraq to trust when we, their neighbors, are burning down their country.

"A panicked face makes the peacock proud."
either bush is proud of all this chaos (think shock and awe) or the media getting what it wants from its viewers when we watch.

"So who do you love? Who do you trust?
Who do you kill when your senator drags out your first born?"
some more imagery of bush and his ruthlessness.

"If the forests turn to static and the gnarled branches, too?
Your body starts to fall into a concrete tutu?"
nfi.

"If you strike for better wages at the cola factory
and they drink champagne as they kick in your teeth?"
this line probably dispels anything ive written so far. this is an obvious reference to the Coca-Cola death squads in colombia. google it to find out some f-ed up stuff.

"I just wanna know what his blood tasted like.
Was it like sugar or vinegar or whiskey or dirt? (It's all those!)"
media asking bush what this all feels like

"Things are never what they seem, the peacocks static melodies."
reference to the media and their bullshit.

in conclusion god bless the blood brothers. this song is amazing.

decodethemoans: you mentioned it upsets you that people want to dance to this song. seems to me the BB wrote it to be an upbeat song as part of the irony they put in alot of their music.

Cursive – The Ugly Organist Lyrics 21 years ago
i noticed something interesting about this intro to their latest cd. if you listen closely to this song its possible to can hear the lead singer tim screaming the first set of lyrics in "some red handed slight of hand". whats interesting in this version is he screams that he is the ugly organ and not "on the ugly organ" as he does in the next song. i thought it was pretty effing cool that he turned a metaphore (the organ representing pain) into physical sound.

tim thinks of himself as the ugly organ. alot of the lyrics on the cd mention his self loathing for verbally attacking his former wife and singing songs he considers to be “awful” or sinful. he hates himself for what he sings about and thinks of himself as an awful unpleasant sounding object.

listening to the cd its easy to hear the deliberate noise coming from the band. cursives songs are loud, noisy, unpleasant, and messy. just as the topics in the songs are ugly and violent so is tims music. he thinks of himself as the pain hes unleashes in his songs.

Bright Eyes – At the Bottom of Everything Lyrics 21 years ago
***i believe the song is about death and returning to god.

the woman on the plane really does die. at first the man sitting next to her seems indifferent, but his personality changes completely when we realize the plane is going to crash. at this point i believe shes speaking to god (creator whoever). hes using the man sitting next to her as a vessel. she asks where are we going? the man replies that its a birthday party.

traditional christian belief states that when we die we are born again in jesus christ. people often refer to dieing as the first day of a new life with god. after she asks that the man / god replies.

We're going to a party, (heaven her first day there)
it's a birthday party. (in death we find new life)
It's your birthday party, (born again in christ)
happy birthday darling.
We love you very, very, very, very, very, very, very much. (god loves all his children)

as far as what supports my idea, the best is the lyrics in the song.

"Death will give us back to god, just like the setting sun is returned to the lonesome ocean." (referring to the woman on the plane returning to god when she crashes into the lonesome ocean.)

"And then they splashed into the deep blue sea. It was a wonderful splash" (seems conor believes death is not something to be feared. christians believe that the day we die and return to god is the happiest day of our lives.)

i admire conor, cursive, and other guys on saddle creak records for not trying to hide the fact that they believe. seems most people are ashamed of it nowadays. oh, ha, yea i should mention that i do believe in god and attend mass occasionally, but am not the ned flanders type. i wouldnt write my thoughts of the song off as some christian rocker rambling. :P

Neutral Milk Hotel – In the Aeroplane Over the Sea Lyrics 21 years ago
"Now how I remember you
How I would push my fingers through
Your mouth to make those muscles move
That made your voice so smooth and sweet
And now we keep where we don't know
All secrets sleep in winter clothes
With one you loved so long ago
Now he don't even know his name"

this is the most confusing of any quotes ive found on the entire collection NMH cds. at frist i thought it was sexual in nature (just replace mouth with another female orafice) but after noticeing anna franks connection to the song im not quite so sure.

wow. this is one powerfull song.

i thought it might be written from the perspective of the boy she fell in love with. "The only girl I've ever loved Was born with roses in her eyes But then they buried her alive" didnt he survive the war? Its been years since they made me read the book. i might be wrong.

Cursive – The Martyr Lyrics 21 years ago
A martyr isnt necessarily related directly to Christianity.

dictionary.com sezz
1. One who endures great suffering: a martyr to arthritis.
2. One who makes a great show of suffering in order to arouse sympathy.

Second one seems to make more sense.
