I agree with j justice. This song can be interepreted as a political statement, but it can be used to describe any situation of non-chalant apathy. It can be a message about the war in Iraq, but it can also be a message about the homeless man on the street or a bird with a broken wing We (or you) did not put the man on the street or break the bird's wing, so you have done nothing wrong, but did you do anything to help it. This song becomes a fast-paced critique of our modern world, not just youth culture. We did not pollute our water or amass nuclear weapons, but have we broken away from our tv screens to fight them? The message is also timeless because it does not have to be limited to a contemporary topic. Imagine high school or something. We all saw someone getting picked on and we all just stood by, caring only about ourselves. We did nothing wrong (we didn't pick on the kid), but did we stop the bully. Since everyone can relate to these human issues (isolation and betrayal) the song becomes more than a political thing.
While I am agaisnt the Iraq war I think it is too easy and too tempting to relate any kind of message to the war. I think the war and all the political hulla-ba-loo has created plenty of inspiration for art and discourse, but not evrythins is about it. Peace. |

I love thi song. Everyone considers Amber to be the great 311 love song but I am sorry...it is Uncalm. So beautiful and anyone who has ever fallen in love, and fallen really hard, can relate. So great. If you have a bf or gf make sure to let them hear this song. And did anyone notice that it is 3 minutes and 11 seconds long! 311 rocks!!! |

Mennacinmonk brings up an interesting point but c'mon...just cause 311 believes in non-violence (andm conversely, there is a lot of violence in the world) doesn't mean that they are frustrated with their beliefs. This song is about just plain rocking and possibly even a nice little jab at music critiques. 311 had some rough times with critics and other "official opinions" in the early days. In a lot of their songs they let the critiques know how they feel. 311 isn't all about pot and sunshine. If anything they are about love and harmony and equality. If that makes them anyless of a great banf then I don't want to listen to music. |

This was the song that really turned me into a 311 fan. I agree that it is about just getting out and having some fun every so often (God knows I don't do enough of that) but has anyone picked up on the eerie parallel it has to masturbation. Seriously! Just take a good look at the chorus. Not saying that the song is about that but damn...weird. Remember kids, mastubration doesn't screw with your eyes. It just screws yourself. |

I am kind off surprised no one has mentioned this but...I love LP but often i feel that there lyrics are just a bunch of rhyming words slapped together to great sounds. In other words...I don't think their lyrics are supposed to mean anything. This song; however, does have somthing you can read into and I love it. I wish LP did more songs like these: songs with actual meanings. |

Nice song. The message is good but all the direct references to what is happening right now give this song a shelf life of about a year or two. If any of us are still able to listen to this song in that time (maybe we will get arrested for listening to seditious music?!) it might lose some of its flavor. Peace |

I think it is about free speech and censorship. I have never really heard about Incubus running into serious censorship issues but as artists they surely must know and deal with it. The album is pretty political so it could also be about the current erosion of civil liberties and rigths, particularly the right to diseent agaistn the government. Awesome analogy |
