| Thank you for pointing that out in such a kind and polite way, Filius. Anyway, I have fixed it up now. I'd gone about ten years getting the title wrong! | |
| Metallica – The Memory Remains (feat. Marianne Faithfull) Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| Just an interesting note (to me, not to you). My friends sang this instead of Happy Birthday at my 18th. Seems like a good idea when you're drunk... | |

I've always thought the song was subversively questioning extreme patriotic values. The literal content certainly is very patriotic (liberty or death, don't tread on me, etc), however, two things suggest that they may actually be satirizing this view: 1: THE SNAKE I know the snake was on the Minute Men’s flag but I think the snake imagery is used for a second reason: America is usually symbolized by the bald eagle which has connotations with strength, pride and majesty. Snakes, on the other hand, are associated with slyness, treachery (think The Garden of Eden) and being extremely dangerous and unpredictable. So this snake metaphor may depict a less flattering image of America. 2: THE TUNE FROM "AMERICA" IN THE INTRO. In this song in A Westside Story, the woman portrays and over-idealized view of how great America is, while the man replies with a cynically to everything she says. Perhaps in the same way, this song is showing that some over-idealized elements of patriotism can be questioned or treated with cynicism. Having said all of this, i don't think the song is anti-American at all, rather it is against extreme patriotism. They are different things. |

| The Whitlams – 400 Miles From Darwin Lyrics | 21 years ago |

It's sort of focussing on Australian reactions to the Dili massacre. There's a candlelight vigil (we pay to shed the sombre tear in the darkness together here) but then everyone just goes and sees a happy movie afterwards, like it's just a token effort that makes us feel good about ourselves and then we can escape and stop worrying about it. "We would have all been Schindler there." We like to imagine ourselves being in places like Timor and helping people in a way that's actually workable and possible like Schindler, but how many of us actually do anything? "A two minute hate is now a three hour love" is the most interesting line. Two minute hate is from 1984, and it was just this organised time when everyone concentrated any feelings of hate on a particular enemy of the state and it was a way of controlling the people. Perhaps the line sugests that this token effort of a vigil (the three-hour love) is just a way of keeping people complacent about the issues and problems in East Timor. "I care, I spent three hours caring, now I'm a good person and I can get on with life." It's just drawing attention to this sort of faux-caring and apathy, which is just a natural part of being human. It's a very cleverly written song |

| Everclear – Like A California King Lyrics | 21 years ago |

This is on whitelightning.org Art: "[It's about] me. It was written looking at me through a jaundice eye. I was poking fun at people who picked on us. There's a lot of tongue and cheek on this album that a lot of people don't pick up on." (Ticketmaster - 1997) So yeah its what he imagines people are saying about him and Everclear but its not entirely serious |

| Lacrimosa – Alleine Zu Zweit Lyrics | 21 years ago |

Well, unfortunately I don't speak German so I have to rely on the english translation (http://world.altavista.com/babelfish) and from this fairly dodgy translation it seems to be about two people who were in love but are growing apart and even though they're together they are both lonely, but it's about wanting to reconnect and feel love again. But of course, even badly translated, the lyrics put it in a much better way than that :P Love this song! |
