| Bright Eyes – Motion Sickness Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I think this song is referencing the song Laura Laurent from the Lifted album. that song has the lyric "to stroll through the greenery in the park past the statues" But also, just the way he sings about the girl in that song and in this one, make me think they are the same person. |

| does anybody know which Daniel Johnston song he is referring to in the opening line? | |
| Cat O'Connor – Holier than thou Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
This song is about God, or more correctly - A certain type of Christian who uses The teachings of God to not have to take responsibility for their own lives, essentially hiding behind a 'veil of ignorance'. Anybody who stumbles upon these lyrics should really check Cat out at http://www.myspace.com/catoconnor (copy and paste into your browser). She is spectacular. |

| In particular I find the matter-of-factness these lyrics posess to be as shocking as the subject matter. She is such a clever and unique lyricist. | |

| The Hoosiers – Goodbye Mr A Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
That is really strange, because I was only today thinking how much this song reminded me of Ben Folds Five and in particular the song Philosophy (I'm thinking of the piano/keyboard along with the aahhhh backing vocals in the chorus) and then when I get on here to mention it, I find that it (possibly) is a commentary on objectivism... intentional or just coincidence? This is why I love music so much, so many connections and things to explore. |

...changes the meaning of the line to him keeping HER* ghost with him, by force... shh. |
|
| Bright Eyes – The Calendar Hung Itself . . . Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
__haligh, it being upbeat is precisely what draws me to this song. Personal taste i guess, but its the tempo that makes it seem even more twisted. I think he is probably a little bit TOO in love with this girl to follow in her footsteps at school every day, it reeks of stalking. also, i love the line "i drug your ghost across the country" as it implies two meanings, firstly as he travels across the country he uses drugs to eradicate her ghost (the memories of her) but also drug sounds like it could mean 'dragged' (i know its not correct english, but since when was that a neccesity in songmeanings?) which then changes the meaning of the line to him keeping his 'ghost' with him, by force, as he travels the country. Therefore he is killing himself to forget her but also never letting himself let go of her either. does anyone else understand that, or am i just talking crap? |

| Brand New – Flying at Tree Level (Version 1.0) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
okay i already posted all this stuff about it being about the band waayyyy back. But 'lovers' fits it as well. The line means we were doomed from the start in the SAME WAY that lovers are. and where do these lyrics appear in a CD insert? i may be wrong but i was under the impression that this song was only released as part of Beer: The Movie's OST, in which case its unlikely that the insert would have lyrics anyway. exs and ohs interpretation of the bridge does make some sense to me though, thank you for helping me out on that one. |

| Belle & Sebastian – Fox in the Snow Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
i think the song shows how different people get different things from the same context. so the fox/girl/boy are out in the snow and not really enjoying it, the snow has become little more than a barrier to their pursuits. but the kid has no cynicism because he is young and naive and so just plays in the snow, that one gratifying moment whereby he knows happiness and youth will never be repeated "once a lifetime" until he grows up and then when the wonder has worn off he will become the fox or the girl or the boy. also i love how this song is written from a bystanders viewpoint, its as if the narrator is sitting drinking coffee and people watching, and the song is his conclusion. |

| Belle & Sebastian – Jonathan David Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
BandS played this song at Reading Festival this year and got a random girl out from the crowd to dance along. They introduced the song by saying one of them would play Jonathan and one of them would play David and they were fighting over this woman. during the song whichever of the guys wasnt singing would dance with the girl but at the end as they sang 'married and you'll be gone' Stuart (Jonathan) and the girl ran off stage. It was very theatrical and nice. so that definitely supports Southbound's interpretation. great song. |

| Frank Turner – Casanova Lament Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
great song and Frank Turner is great live. It's about the guilt of repeated one night stands and how he knows that there is more to life and relationships than this, but cant seem to find that place. I love the way Frank can put so much humour into his songs and the way he performs them, without losing the core meaning and without writing completely meaningless material. |

| Ben Folds Five – Mess Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
you cant force yourself to believe in something that you dont believe in though. if he were to turn to God to suit his own ends (i.e get the girl) then it would be a selfish act and therefore wouldnt work anyway. this is a really pretty song and captures the confusion of missing someone but being happy for them at the same time. He has learnt to be alone and can admit that her new guy "is kind and true" but obviously still has strong feelings for her and wishes he hadnt messed it up in the first place. how many of us would change the decisions we had made with hindsight? |

| Taking Back Sunday – Little Devotional Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
i would like to update my previous post... "do you think he'd be better doing what i do best?" isnt arrogance at all, i understand this now my ex girlfriend has a new guy, and i am thinking "seriously, how is HE as good as i was??" sorry Adam. this does mean, however, that i agree completely with riffr49, and didnt need to post in the first place. |

| Jack's Mannequin – MFEO: Part 1: Made for Each Other/Part 2: You Can Breathe Lyrics | 20 years ago |

this song is ten times better when you look at the lyrics, this follows nicely in the vien of "Hoiliday From Real" i dont think that this project could have come at a better time in my life if it had tried is it possible for the world to look this way forever? |
|
| The Spill Canvas – All Hail The Heartbreaker Lyrics | 20 years ago |

| Dashboard Confessional – The End of an Anchor Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
this song is on the universal special edition of A Mark A Mission... its a Uk bonus track along with This Old Wound. i never thought about it being about God but there are some arguments for that, the song means more to me if its about a girl though. I wasn't well for a while I savored the things that I knew were sure to destroy me And that seemed to hold me That seemed to carry me where I couldn't go On the strength of my own Well, I should've known That gets me nowhere I've learned that now I swear seems to me that he was kidding himself about something to stave off depression or something, when really he should have faced it head on and got over it. So, hand me the rocks to help weigh me down And tether my legs with a cord tightly bound To the end of an anchor thrown into the sound And test me to see if I will rise against the worst that it can get and i always thought that maybe he had been unfaithful in the relationship with the girl, and he is askin her to help him to stay close in the future, this chorus does make sense with the "returning to God" interpretation, too |

| Jack's Mannequin – Holiday From Real Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
this is so good and a little more adult than many soco efforts, i think its just about living and letting life wash over you. trying to enjoy it rather than worrying about problems i love the way he sings "fuck yeah we can live like this" its so relaxed and honest. its about being young and loving it |

| Something Corporate – Watch the Sky Lyrics | 20 years ago |

hey wicked, i didnt realise the Americans missed out on this song till i read these comments... let all us British/Australian/Japanese people point and laugh in unison... hah ha ha...ha. i feel blessed my favourite song on North, but a little too short for my liking |

| The Used – Poetic Tragedy Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
the "and he takes his life" bit really stuck out for me, which is unusual cause i cant ever tell what people are saying when they scream. once again we see Berts astounding vocal versatility and lyrical genius in this song, i think the imagery of nothing left in the cup is awesome in its hopelessness... he feels worse than pessimistic, this is real no-hope territory, and i agree with previous posters who think there is an element of the auto-biography in this song. |

grr, it deleted half my comment!! sorry for double (now triple) posting Newquay 2003 = best holiday i ever had, with this album playing constantly at the bar whilst we played pool and got drunk and did holiday stuff, awesome. |

| The Streets – Fit But You Know It Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I reckon Mike was great at Reading Festival last year, he has that innate ability to appeal to any sort of music fan (unlike 50Cent, haha) some lady started calling us motherfuckers for pushing during this song so we started a pit around her and sang "Fat but you know it" to her in the chorus... i guess you had to err, be there... good times! | |
| Manowar – Battle Hymn Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| this song reminds me of a past life spent playing internet roleplaying games (http://www.tibia.org) till 4am and then getting up for school at 7, I wouldnt have it any other way, good times. looking back the song does seem a bit violent for my impressionable 14 year old mind... kids these days | |
| The Spill Canvas – All Hail The Heartbreaker Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I knew it the moment you walked into the door - I'd of laughed my head off if someone walked into the door! did she like totally not see the door or something?? haha... i like this song although i agree with brighterthantheyare about the clichéness and the comatose line, its catchy but hardly groundbreaking. the walking into the door line makes up for it though |
|
| The Streets – Dry Your Eyes Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
its a pity this song got totally overplayed on radio when it was released cause it allowed people to become desensitized to the intense emotions and it became 'just another song'. that said, this isnt the best song by Mike, its just a lot different from the rest of his material so gets more attention. and yes, i did cry, and would still if i heard it now. |
|
| Operation Ivy – Room Without A Window Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Zedd138 got it best, mostly due to the long words he used. this band were so raw that you couldnt help but be taken along in the frenetic pace of their music, lets just hope that a few more people listen to the messages that Jesse was trying to convey in this music. | |
| Jimmy Eat World – Get It Faster Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
okay, this is wierd cause everyone has been saying how awesome this song is live, whereas i personally think that this is awful live, the vocals are all over the shop and he cant recreate the same feel as you get on the CD, musically its great, but the vocals ruin this for me live. if anyone has seen the clip from this song on the "Riding In Vans With Boys" DVD, then let me know if you agree with me. Also i saw them live in Portsmouth (UK) a few weeks ago and it was just as bad then. Please dont get me wrong I love this song, and this band, but it just struck me as strange how everyone loved it live. the other point id like to make is on the back of the Jimmy Eat World album, the song list is numbered all the way down except for this song, anyone else notice that? |
|
| Jimmy Eat World – Your House Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
so they are the one that will?? nice one werechick, you just managed to totally confuse me with your crazy double negatives! i have a tear-jerking, violins-in-the-background, sick-inducing story to tell as well, but its pretty much the same as everyone elses, what matters is that this song manages to put feelings that apparently we have (almost) all shared into words and music and allow us to feel just that little better for it. Jimmy Eat World have an amazing power to do this, and thats why we love them. |
|
| Taking Back Sunday – I Am Fred Astaire Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| regardless of what the song is about, i find the line "well i flicked every switch that i could find on my way out" hilarious, next time i have one of those proper "im gonna storm out of the house now" arguments with someone im definitly gonna be looking for switches to flick, it makes me chuckle... | |
| Taking Back Sunday – Little Devotional Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
yeah i agree with riffr49 on the whole formal clothing thing i reckon im probably imagining the exact same dress! the main vibe i get from this song is that the guy is acting like he is completely in control of the situation. he seems suave and sophisticated, relaxed. making comments on the girls dress as if he is of a higher status than her. i believe that he is just using her for sex and actually almost pities her. this would fit in with her being the one that is cheating "do you think he'd be better, doing what i do best?" - i think Adam is such a loser, he always seems so full of himself. but i love the music these guys make so i cant complain i guess! |
|
| Less Than Jake – The Science of Selling Yourself Short Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| one of the best LTJ songs, the way the music is jusxtaposed to the lyrics makes you wonder how you should react to it. but its definitly an apathy song and im a teenager so i gotta love it! "just sing along..." | |

| Serial Joe – Mistake Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| so seriously, where did they go, im from the UK and i really liked the few songs i could get hold of this band back in i dunno, 2002 or something. and they had a website and everything and now its all i gone, i mean i guess they broke up and stuff, but its strange. this song is good though, the first i heard and probably the most mature out of the ones i ever heard. | |
| Brand New – Play Crack the Sky Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| afoolishtragedy - nobody has said that having water in your lungs is a good thing, if you listen to the way he sings it, you can tell that he isnt being sarcastic, he doesnt mean it like he "needs her like a hole in the head", its like saying despite the fact being with her will kill him, he is still willing to do it. | |
| Dashboard Confessional – Hands Down Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| clearly. but anyway i almost feel embarrased to say i like this song considering the volume of other people who have already said it... i heard this song when i was with my first gf and so it inevitably became our song, which is a pity really, cause the relationship was nothing special, and this song is too good to be wasted like that. ah well. | |
| Jack Johnson – Fortunate Fool Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
hey, does Jack Johnson ever come the UK? im just getting into him, and i have to see him live. in regards to this song, i agree with everyone who has said the song is sarcastic, especially stoppretending, above me... the actress/singer idea is plausible to me. cant add anything. |
|
| Jack Johnson – Mudfootball (for Moe Lerner) Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| he says the only reason they laughed a lot was because they thought that everything good always would remain... dya think that if they knew then what they know now then growin up wouldnt have been half as much fun. ignorance is bliss. | |
| Sorry About Dresden – On Contradiction Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| the chorus to this song is so catchy but in a really subtle way, i dont know what it is exactly, perhaps the chord progression or the relaxed way of singing but i cant get enough... not sure about the other stuff i've heard by this band though. | |
| Green Day – American Idiot Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| i love the bit in the video where it kicks back in and Billie-joe shoots himself with his fingers, kick-ass! | |
| Ben Folds – The Luckiest Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
although i really do like this song i cant help but think it is a little repetitive and loses some of its impact because of this. you can tell how much he means what he is singing though and it makes me wish i was in love like that... i'll play this song at my wedding... |
|
| Ben Folds Five – Steven's Last Night In Town Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
i dont believe this song only has 4 comments! this song is so great musically, it makes me wanna dance. and like sooo many other BFF songs it makes me laugh to think of this guy who wont get lost! i especially like the rambling style of the lyrics which is also inherent in so many BFF songs. whats the story behind steven going quiet i think steven was mad etc etc... i love the way it sounds like something big is going to happen in the story but then the moment passes and nothing changes, its like a massive dissapointment, but funny as. this band is so good. |
|
| Ben Folds Five – Song for the Dumped Lyrics | 21 years ago |
