This song is after the charachter dies (he dies in the downward spiral the song) it speaks of how his suicide has acheived nothing.(if you read this whole post you'll see what i mean) no drug references here. "I hurt myself today to see if I still feel I focus on the pain the only thing that's real the needle tears a hole the old familiar sting try to kill it all away but I remember everything" this is about cutting, how he cuts to try and get rid of all the emotional pain by focusing on the physical to take his mind off it. then how when he's dont all the pain comes back (but i remember everything). "what have I become? my sweetest friend everyone I know goes away in the end" about how he hates what he has become, and everyone has left him because of it. "you could have it all my empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt " how he wants to give, but has nothing to give (this comes up a bit in the album) and how he is so worthless that he can't make anyone else happy. "I wear this crown of shit upon my liar's chair full of broken thoughts I cannot repair " self hate/loathing messages "beneath the stains of time the feelings disappear you are someone else I am still right here " after his death, other peoples feelings of him passed and they moved on, but all the emotional pain he had before he died is carried on with him after death "what have i become? my sweetest friend everyone I know goes away in the end" just going on about how nothing has been fixed, he hates what he has become "if I could start again a million miles away I would keep myself I would find a way" if he could go through life again, he would still be himself, because he has to come to terms with the fact that he is ok as a human being. also nsts: if you ever had a gf that cut herself you would never ever ever tell a guy that it was a failure of his that his gf cut, you really dont understand what it's like. my gf used to cut, and i hated myself when she did. also he never blamed the song for his gf's cutting, he just said that he can't listen to it cause it reminds him too much. |

the whole downward spiral album is put togeather in one story, the pigs are the voices inside his head from Mr Self Destruct (and also piggy) March Of The Pigs is about his battle agains the imaginary friends (or the voices) and them making him do things. the end of the song is when the voices 'win' and take him over as his new personality or, have complete control over him. you cant pick away at an individual song in TDS, you have to look at the album as a whole, and how each song relates to the big picture. |

the song is featured on the album "the downward spiral" the whole album is put tegeather as one story of a man in a downward spiral, closer is near the start of the album (song 5 i think) its about how the other person makes them feel better, gives them reason to live, makes them forget the bad e.t.c, and how he would do anything to be with her. he's searched and finds nothing that he can give her though ("help me ive broke apart my insides help me i've got no soul to sell") sex makes it all better for him. |
