It seems to me that this song deals with the vastness of life, the good side of it and the bad. At first she describes a series of events, but then she delves into emotions like love and sadness. I think the song is simply an instrospective look at life. We live day by day and often forget to stop and think about the events that unfold around us and their possible meaning. |

I strongly believe that this song is directed to the friends who tried to help Elliott Smith, the friends who didn't like how he was living his life. I recall Elliott Smith saying in an interview that a lot of people wish he'd live a better life. And he'd just wanted to be left alone. The lyrics "just leave it alone. leave me alone. The lyrics "you belong tagging along. And I belong in your zoo" seem to be about the discomfort he felt when people told him how to live his life. It was as if he was in a zoo, locked up, where people could watch his every single mood. And then the lyrics "I'll do what I can so you can be what you do" seem to be implying "i'll keep on living my life miserably until you can see that when I think of you, I will only think of how you try to change me. Eventually, that will be the only thing that will define who you are, in my eyes." |

yeah, this song is just beautiful. Is it just me or does the beginning sound like a bunch of men marching to anyone else? it's kinda eerie.
but anyway, I think the song is pretty self-explanatory. It's about telling someone to just fucking do something and wanting more than friendship from a friend.
and I want something from Denali......come back together again or start a new project! DO SOMETHING already. you're making all your fans feel dejected. sorry for sounding selfish. hah. |

yeah, In Reverie is a beautiful album. You didn't honestly believe that STD wouldn't change throughout all these years. It would have been very sad if they didn't.
anyway, I think this song is either about God or about having faith in politicians. But I really think it's about God. He refers to wars and working to earn a living and just stuff that's going on today. And then he says "But i'm driving in the dark towards you/ Not stopping 'till I catch the sunlight in my eyes." I mean, that's what people basically do when they believe in God. |

"Grendel" is such a great book. You can't just read "Beowulf." Grendel will definitely distort your point of view on heroes and stuff. It's sad how just because the warriors didn't understand Grendel, they hated him. That idea connects to read life, too. When we don't understand something, we fear it and hate it. I guess that's what this songs about: trying to find acceptance amongst people who don't understand you. You'll just eventually destroy yourself in the process. |

I think that there's two ways to interpret this song:
1) you think you're not receiving enough love when it is really all your fault for being so reserved: "your phone is off the hook, your doors are shut." So this song is hopeful, explaining that love IS out there, you just have to look for it.
2) Or maybe this song is meant to be sarcastic. I know that sometimes when I listen to this song, I cry because I find the words to be so untrue. It's as i'm singing the song hoping the words will come true but by the song's end, I know that they're not. |
