The Hold Steady – Girls Like Status Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I assume the "D4" line is a reference to Dillinger Four's Portrait of the Artist...: http://www.songmeanings.net/lyric.php?lid=59822 |
P.O.S. – P.O.S. Is Ruining My Life Lyrics | 17 years ago |
A few notes on the lyrics: It's definitely "come down". The rest of these are mostly guesses "Everybody want the consequence and a great defense," "Everybody hates me, everybody wanna fight." "We can’t stand to look up at the sun, but can’t sleep in the moonlight," "it’s comin like a Tilt-a-whirl," "This ain’t amusement, ima lose it (Two cents?)… it’s bullshit… Gimme two cents everybody seems to have the same change But can’t break my five up, two cents? (yeah right) But can’t spare nothing if I’m holdin a cup. " "If I try, so I try to get a grip, a hold, a handle, a hand, a voice…" "And it’s strained, I think it might break, Scratch, crack, silence, a voice… And it’s strained, I think it might break, Scratch, crack…" "Nothings even inside of me, nothing I can understand " There's a live video here, by the way: http://scheduletwo.com/video/POS/pos_is_ruining_my_life |
Motion City Soundtrack – Cambridge Lyrics | 19 years ago |
There's also a Cambridge, MN, which would make more sense in reference to these guys, but none of them are from that area as far as I know. |
Motion City Soundtrack – Feel Like Rain Lyrics | 19 years ago |
As much as it pains me to see it, I think you're right about the cutting. Even the "rain" strikes me as a blood analogy now. And in that case, the chorus probably refers to him having a history of cutting and the ultimate realization that it could end badly which caused him to stop, even though the urges keep coming. |
Motion City Soundtrack – Time Turned Fragile Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Like I said, a response to "A-OK" (which was written about his dad, presumably from Justin's perspective). I'd like to go deeper with this, but honestly, the growth lyrically from that song to this one almost makes it impossible. There's not a whole lot to say about A-OK other than the fact that Justin wrote it to tell his dad that, ultimately, he's fine. |
Motion City Soundtrack – Make Out Kids Lyrics | 19 years ago |
A couple things: 1) "Armed with an eye for contradictions" 2) "Hooray for the madness" 3) To me, it's about trying to create a relationship out of something like a one night stand. That's what the intro kinda says to me. You go and make out with someone before you get to know them, and then any sort of relationship after that is allegedly hopeless. |
Motion City Soundtrack – Feel Like Rain Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I see it as them being in a relationship that they feel isn't working but they're more afraid to go out and try something different than they are to be stuck with something mediocre. |
Semisonic – Singing In My Sleep Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I'd assume it is a Blondie reference, but only as an example of a song on the mixtape. |
Semisonic – California Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i'm sure this one's about their first album. Hence the "Great Divide" reference. He poured his heart into writing and recording those songs, they went out to California to record, and when they had gone through all the promotion and everything, they were left pretty much exactly where they had started out. |
Alkaline Trio – Prevent This Tragedy Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think this, like most of the album, is focused mainly on the religious aspect of things. The "stop praying for me" to me is their way of saying that the people just don't get it and think religion is the answer to their problems. It's a way of understanding that the people are trying to do what they think is right while pointing out how misguided it all is. Deep down, people want to help the WM3, but they don't understand and think they need to be "saved" with prayer, etc. |
Motion City Soundtrack – Time Turned Fragile Lyrics | 19 years ago |
On another note, it's "Time Turned Fragile". It makes more sense that way. It's a reference to "Julia" by Limbeck. My thought: it's a follow up of sorts to A-OK. As far as I know, nobody in the band has kids. Rather, I think it's written from the perspective of one of their parents. "i know i say that i'm just fine but i hope you wonder from time to time" That section, to me, sounds like he's making a reference to A-OK. |
Alkaline Trio – Sadie Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think the goal of this one is to point out all the stupid things people do for religion. That's what the quote makes me think, anyway. Basically, it's saying Sadie put all her faith in Manson and ultimately everybody just turned on her and let her fend for herself, which presumably kinda shows how they feel about religion. People put all their faith in something and as far as they're concerned, they rarely get anything back. |
Further Seems Forever – The Sound Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Jason wrote the song about his old band, Affinity breaking up. If you want to see it as something else, so be it, but that's what he intended it to be about. |
Motion City Soundtrack – When You're Around Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Small Towns isn't a side project...it's a completely different band. The only connection, aside from the fact that they're friends, is that one of the guys from Small Towns came up with the moog riff for one of the songs on I Am the Movie, and now, apparently, Justin did some backup vocals for the new Small Towns album which is coming out sometime this summer, I think. |
Motion City Soundtrack – A-OK Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Last time I saw them, Justin said he wrote this song for his dad. |
Alkaline Trio – Hell Yes Lyrics | 20 years ago |
As far as I'm concerned, the brilliance of this song is that it works on both levels. On the one hand, it's got a clear religious tone to it. On the other, it's got an obvious relationship aspect to it. Much like Donner Party, that's what makes it work so well. It doesn't have to be one of the other, and frankly, I like to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume it isn't. It seems to me that they're making the comparison between the feeling that God isn't there for you and the feeling of having someone you're close to leave you. |
