this song is not about drug - cash or nin version. the meaning of this song goes much deeper than that. Only by listening to TDS and understanding every other song can you start to understand this one. But to say that the NIN version has no meaning at all is farcical. Rozze you obviously dont know the meaning behind the song hurt, though for those who want to understand it more, I'll simply direct you here: http://www.sickamongthepure.com/files/2002/02/TDS/TDS.htmll |

| Nine Inch Nails – Ruiner Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
By this stage in the album, he doesnt know about the machine - it reveals itself in the next song. Therefore "you didnt hurt me" etc isn't persuasion, merely truth. He just overthrew god, and the general view of god is that he is the most powerful being in existence. If you can overthrow/defeat god, does that not make you the most powerful then? Therefore the abrupt ending of this song should be a shock - but it isnt. The realisation of the machine in the next song, and its power over him is realistic, because the Machine IS a part of him. This helps the protagonist realise that defeat can come from within. Thus begins the battle with himself. |
|
| Nine Inch Nails – Big Man with a Gun Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I said that the protagonist gained strength through sexual and violent acts - the main being in closer, through which he controls both sexually and violently ( you let me violate you/desecrate you etc) its obvious - "you get me closer to god" tells you that through these acts he can become like god, and in the next song (ruiner) he uses this power to overthrow god - he in essence becomes god. In the becoming he develops another side to himself, the robotic, unemotional side, and morals go out the window, making abuse of his power easier in this song, big man with a gun. This is the realisation of his power, and uses it to his full extent.Power overtakes him and he abuses it wholeheartedly. This is what I was getting at. | |

| Nine Inch Nails – Ruiner Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| you're sort of on the right track. During the abrupt ending of this song and the next song ( The Becoming ), he realises that whereas his body is invincible, his mind isnt. His mind starts to become void of emotion, as the mechanical side of his mind starts to take over ( IT's a part of me it's inside me / there's no escape from this,my new consciousness / etc etc ) | |

| Nine Inch Nails – Reptile Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| By reptile the mechanical side of his mind has taken over, and he has lost his ability to feel. He sleeps with a hooker ( seeds from a thousand others...) to try and feel the emotion he used to have ( also a reference to closer - through sex and violence he was able to become god, so not only does he want to feel emotion, he wants to be in power again, for he is helpless in the hands of the mechanical, logical side of his brain - this is also obviouse in the fact that he is knowingly infecting her with his diseases, also giving him power over her. In reference to a Warm place, he knows that there is still an element of control over himself that the mechanical side cannot take, and throughout this song he is trying to find a way to control it again, instead of fallin further down the spiral of destruction) By this stage in the album, he is desperate for self control, and sees the hooker his way of regaining that control. This control isnt powerful, but strong enough to make one last important decision in The Downward Spiral (song). | |

| have to laugh at some of the last comments there o_O | |
| Nine Inch Nails – Ruiner Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
ruiner is another name for god - he already defied god in heresy, and now he is opposing him "how'd you get so big? how'd you get so strong? how'd it get so hard? how'd it get so long?" This has sexual and powerful messages - he now knows that he can become godlike through sex and violence, and by the end of this song, god is overthrown and he has taken his place (you cant hurt me, nothing can stop me now) this isnt about sexual abuse, its about abuse of power, and now that he is in control of it, he will begin to abuse it for his own gains aswell (in the next few songs) |

| Nine Inch Nails – Hurt Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| this song is a reflection of the twists the characters life throughout the album has taken. He died in The Downward Spiral, not hurt - he is already dead by the time hurt plays. by this time, the mechanical voice which was controlling him has finally disappeared, and the human soul is left. His abuse of his power when he became god, the loss of humanity, is all finished. In the end, the choice to take his life was correct, rather to save his soul, and others. In relation, he tells us that if he could start again, he would have found a way to live, and would make the right choices the second time around, instead of the ones he did make. This is a song about life and living it, not a song about cutting yourself or suicide. this is a song about making the right choices , and not to make the choices the character did throughout the whole album | |
| Nine Inch Nails – The Downward Spiral Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
"but there isn't any cohesive story line to it." I laughed at that. This is an album about control. Of others, of yourself. The character by this stage in the album had lost control up until A Warm Place, where his human side finally showed him that he can make the right choices. His choice was made reality in The Downward Spiral, when he shot himself in the head. The voice represented in The Downward Spiral (song) is the mechanical voice, so whereas this song is about the death of the character, more importantly, it is about the death of the mechanical side of his mind, the controlling, emotionless side, which in turn helps to save his soul (and others) Whereas Eraser was about the choice ("kill me"), this was the character going through with it, and dying. |

| Nine Inch Nails – Closer Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
All the songs off the downward spiral have to be taken together as a story. In this context , this song is another turning point in the album. After openly disregarding god, accusing him of abusing his power, he finally realises that he has the ability to become as powerful as god. The use of "you get me closer to god" is literal. By dominating and controlling the woman, and using sex and violence (as well as other vices) he becomes strong enough to oppose god "help me you make me perfect help me become somebody else " Through the vices, his broken body becomes perfect, his power becomes strong. His quest for complete power reaches its final stages in the next song, when he overthrows and becomes god. |

| Nine Inch Nails – Big Man with a Gun Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| this song has to be taken in context with the whole album, just as McJesus03 said. Throughout the whole album he has gained power through sexual and violent acts - now that he has this power ( the overthrowing of god and taking his position) he is abusing it. ( earlier in the album he accuses god of abusing his power, now, after overthrowing him, he becomes him, and abuses his power in the same way) this song reflects this abuse of power. | |
| Nine Inch Nails – A Warm Place Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
its the reverse of closer and the downward spiral on the same ablum. In relation to the whole album, is meant to represent the human part of the mind haeping the man in the story make the right choice. Throughout the whole album, the character defied god, killed god, then became god, through sexual and violent acts ("you get me closer to god") As the mechanical voice inside his head tries to take over him and control him, this song reflects where the machine could not reach, could not control . A warm place inside you that reminds you that there is a place inside you that nobody can reach, and nobody can take away from you, the peace and calm in your heart that will stay with you forever. This is the turning point in the album - just as the mechanical side of the mind starts to take over control, the character realises that he can still make a choice to save his soul - death By eraser, he wants death, in reptile, he wants to feel emotion.by the downward spiral, the mechanical side takes over, but as it does, he takes a gun to his head, to save others, and to save himself. oh and it has lyrics (in the first fifteen seconds or so "The best thing about liife is knowing you put it together" is repeated over and over) |
