Damien Rice – The Blower's Daughter Lyrics 17 years ago
Funny, I also assumed "blower" referred to an old fashioned profession related to blacksmith or forger, because I first heard this song in the context of the movie "Closer" (used BEAUTIFULLY in the opening/closing sequences). And in Closer, the characters are looking at these tiles placed in this wall in the 1800s with people's names & old fashioned professions written on them. But anyways, the song was so moving & used so perfectly in the movie that I automatically went out searching for the song. I love that it doesn't have a million verses & is so simple, direct & unpretentious. It just keeps repeating the same "can't take my eyes off of you" over and over like the obsession that it is.

Better Than Ezra – A Lifetime Lyrics 21 years ago
i love this song. but it never occurred to me for the 3.5 minutes to mean the REM song length.
I just thought that it meant that he was on the beach with the urn for 3.5 minutes...a really short fleeting time before he got found out/busted, but it felt like a lifetime to him because he was reliving all those memories of them in those fleeting minutes.

the 3.5 minutes also meaning like...how their time together was too short, but they really fully lived life to the fullest together in the short time they were given while she was still alive.

Better Than Ezra – Rosealia Lyrics 21 years ago
wow, i didn't realize it had to do with Carnivale...is that the same as Mardi Gras? (they're from New Orleans, yes?)
Anyhow, i love the double meaning of "put on your mask, wearing your cape...". it's so beautiful. because on the one hand, the mask & cape hide her from her abusive husband and let her escape. but on ther other hand, it's like she's a super hero flying around & stuff. haha. it perfectly captures the duality of hiding & vulnerability with her courage & strength too. truly a tragic girl...so sad.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Ava Adore Lyrics 21 years ago
the lyrics are very dangerous/haunting. I agree it's about a screwy relationship where the people involved love abusing/being abused even though they know it's destructive. I love how the song deals with both the love/care part of the relationship AND the sort of hard rough lust too. I'm not a guy, so I don't know...but I've heard of guys hating the person that they love or are obsessed with, and wanting to hurt her, even though they totally love/adore her in this weird contradiction. this song sort of embodies that i guess. the rough primal part of a screwy relationship.

Shawn Mullins – Lullaby Lyrics 21 years ago
i love this song. because ive always thought of it as my song. i don't understand every single lyric, but I'm pretty sure I understand the general story. a girl has an objectively perfect life...she has enough money, was raised in physically good conditions etc. But it sucks, because her parents are all high profile so that everyone's watching her all the time, which is why "she cant let go and she cant relax." because she has a high profile, all the time, which sucks, because you cant ever just be normal. which is why she "feels safe in this bar on fairfax," because its a regular place where regular mundane people go, where no one will know who she is. she can just blend in and hide for once. and since anyone looking at her life will think that its great and all, a perfect life, no one understands why she's so stressed and stuff. except the writer of this song, which is why he is telling her that "Everything's gonna be all right". because he's the one person in teh world who understands.

i love this song, its my favorite. i play it on loop all the time, and it makes me feel so much better all the time, just to hear that "Everythigns gonna be all right." feels so good, even if it is just empty promises.

maybe my interpretation is wrong, but it makes a lot of sense to me.

Norah Jones – Don't Know Why Lyrics 21 years ago
i love this song! (hence my screenname) i agree with prtwilight85. but about insect1123's comment, it's true that she didn't write "don't know why", but norah jones is indeed a songwriter. she wrote a lot of the other songs on the cd herself, just not this one. and i hope she's here to stay, because she is awesome and talented (etc etc). her voice is just so mellow and unpretentious and beautiful...

Our Lady Peace – Clumsy Lyrics 21 years ago
I agree with most of what was said, but I have a slightly different spin on things.

I like this lyric by Our Lady Peace:

"I'll be waving my hand, watching you drown, watching you scream, quiet or loud."

I like how it's not like "I'll be saving you and intervening and making it all better" like some singers promise in other songs. Because...I think that's a false promise. It's not possible, and I think it's misleading and fake to promise to always be there to make it all better for someone else. And that's what makes a song cheesy. You're NOT always going to be there for me, so I don't like that you're trying to make me trust you. Like that.

But this song isn't like that. It's sort of like a memory song... it's very real. The singer isn't promising to make it better, just to KNOW what the person is going through, which is sometimes enough. I like that. And I like how volume doesn't matter. A lot of times, the loud people get fixed because they are exhibitionist about their crap. And the quiet people suffer in silence and hoard their junk from prying eyes. But the singer promises to hear regardless of the volume. That's sweet. You know, like the saying that a dead person isn't really dead as long as someone who is alive still remembers them. It's the same way here. No promises of resurrection, just of remembrance.
