and also, about 5 posts up from me someone brought up the fact that every song on songmeanings has been said to have been about drugs....what i realized, specifically after reading thru the posts about this song, is that anyone who just chalks a song up to a drug induced state is one non-artistic and pathetic mother fucker....in other words, if you're assuming that any song that has some sort of visual or audible creativity could have only possibly been written while under an influence, you need to realize that, ok, maybe YOU would have to be trippin your ass off to come up with this stuff, but that's what seperates YOU from BOB FUCKIN DYLAN...i don't mean to be rude or offensive, it's just that if you assume a song is about drugs, or influenced by drugs, you're simply not giving credit where it's due, and almost saying "yea, i saw a tambourine man when i was trippin too, i could come up with this stuff easy"......try it |

well I know there is a metaphorical meaning to this song, but in the strictly literal sense this song means even more to me. It shows these three kids growing up together, here they are siblings, and the beach is actually literally the beach, and each summer they visit the same place and each summer they grow a bit more. It's funny because this summer I heard this song for the first time, and I also brought this girl with me on my family vacation, we've been friends since birth, now 19. Our families used to hang out a lot and go on vacations in the summer, but the last I remember us all being together on a beach was around 10 or 11, and remembering those times makes me happy and both sad, as now we're all grown up, and the mystery of what will come of life is slowly becoming obvious. The most remarkable coincidence between my story and this story is Veronica going from being amazed at the waves and the beauty of life to being all about finding a man to spend her life with (the girl in my story), and also Dade who ponders life, love, and everything in between no matter his age (which of course would be me). Anyways this really makes no sense if you aren't me, I just thought I'd get everything off my chest |

I don't think this song is as much anti-war as it is about honor and fighting for what you believe in rather than fighting for who knows what...through his whole life it'd been his job to defend his country (or whatever he's defending), and he accepts it. But he knows that many of the younger men have no idea what they're getting themselves into, sort of blind patriotism. I get a vision of men standing before him debating whether or not to leave him to himself, but then they realize the good they could do if they live, rather than fight a war and die; the general, however, knows that it is his duty to go to war, and give it his all even if all he can give gets him killed. |
