This is my favorite Phish song. Their songs are always up for interpretation. I believe this song is about losing something and having a guilty feeling after its gone when you realize how important it really was in the first place. This song is so eerie yet incredible at the same time. The content is extremely deep. The lyrics are so odd that the song is definitely hard to interpret. This might be a big stretch but I think the train is a metaphor for a relationship in ruins. The first few verses describe the loud sound of the train and how it scars the beauty of the countryside. Keeping this in mind, the relationship dysfunction (or train) is destroying the beauty of the relationship.
"Always the summers are slipping away
Find me a way for making it stay"
These lyrics make the song. Here, one of the lovers is looking for a way to save the relationship. When he or she does, the train passes through and everything is back the way is was. Yes, it's a big stretch but that's how I see the song. |

A guy/girl may be too worried about what the other person thinks of them so they act like someone they're
not.
"Honest is easy, Fiction is where genius lies."
These lyrics are kind of ironic because honesty does not come easily for most people. They feel that it's easier not to be true to who they are. This is definitely a very truthful song and kind of sends a message out that honesty can make relationships work. This song demonstrates Guster's lyrical genius. |

I read that Staley spent the last few years of his life alone in his apartment, getting high and playing video games. That's no way for someone to go out. Staley definitely put his heart and soul into his music and it shows. |

Most of Alice In Chains songs deal with the havoc that drug abuse can have on one's life. This song is a perfect example. Staley and Cantrell had amazing chemistry and Staley was one of the best singers of the '90s. So many bands have modeled their sound out of AIC's influence. I still can't believe that Staley went out like he did. It's such a waste of talent. It's also sad that no one really gave a shit about his death. Not to be cheesy but I know that I was deeply affected and still am. Watch their classic MTV Unplugged performance and you'll see what drugs did to him. It seems like the best musicians always die way too young... |

I love this tune because I can relate to it so much. Friends move in and out of life like rapid fire. In the end, you realize who the true ones are because they always manage to stick around no matter what the situation. The ones who fall away for whatever reason are the ones that don't matter. Vedder is an amazing songwriting and this song is one of his best ever. |

I don't understand why people say this song is "lacking" in its lyrics. It's one of the best tunes ever written. People need to give Weiland and STP a little more respect. I listen to this song and have absolutely no clue what Weiland is singing about, but that's what makes him such a lyrical genius. His songs are always up for interpretation and that might have been his main goal as a lyricist. STP is my favorite band of all time and if it weren't for Purple I wouldn't be the music freak I am now. Weiland is the epitome of rock star. It's sad that you got these bitches accusing this band of copying. Also, I think a lot STP's music is overshadowed by Weiland's drug problems. People need to set all that shit aside and realize the greatness of this band. I feel in years to come STP will finally get the long, overdue respect they deserve. I listen to this song and think drugs automatically. But, I think the song can be interpreted in different ways. I feel like the dude in the song is on a journey of self discovery. He's searching for something yet he doesn't know where the search will take him. The Chili Peppers have more chemistry then a lot of bands out there. John Frusciante is a badass and they just have a classic sound. It amazes me that even after all this time the band is still making great music. It's definitely rare in this era of sucky-ass grunge band wannabees. This is a great driving song. |

Although I've become rather burned out with Dave Matthews, I still have great appreciation for his amazing musical talents. He comes up with the best guitar licks and he seems to be able to capture a moment perfectly in his lyrics. This song is a good example of that. Dave will go down as one of the greatest singer/songwriters ever. He needs to be given more props for his guitar playing because he brings a style like no other and is one of the best guitarists ever in my opinion. No band on earth can give a show like DMB. |
