I think this is autobiographical and written in the third person. The "southern state" and "college town" with bars is definitely referring to Athens, GA, home to a few Saddle Creek bands including Azure Ray (1/2 of which is Maria Taylor, one of Conor's girlfriends). The song is about how Conor's been touring, came home for a few days and then left again to Athens to be with a the girl (I'm assuming Maria)... Meanwhile one of his other friends in Athens just had his "heart broken" (perhaps this part is about Andy?). Conor gets really drunk every night and is afraid of being confronted about his drinking and the question of why he is in Athens and in the relationship: because he really wants to be or is it just the "only thing he's got?" |

Um... I thought the title was a reference to Spinal Tap... the black album... the guy from Spinal Tap explains that they don't make a black any darker than the one they chose for printing... "there's none more black."
Also I would say the "false desire" stuff is more of a reference to consumer culture... For instance in the Gatefold liner notes:
"How do you identify yourself? Through career aspirations? Leisure aspirations? Money? There is a created, manufactured desire that motivates our lives within this commodity culture. Let passion run your life, not your boss." |

I guess this was written with engine down's old singer.. still, one of my favorite songs by them. The lyrics were a little vague to me at first, but now I kind of relate them to a relationship that has ended/is ending and still grasping onto it and the things you liked about it. |
