Rest in peace, Owsley Augustus Stanley, III. Died Feb., 2011 in car crash in Australia; he had become a citizen in the 1990's. A brilliant man who was alternately a ballet dancer, US Air Force enlistee, sound engineer and designer, renowned chemist. It may well prove to be that he is recognized as the driving force for the entire hippie scene, sub-culture, and counter-culture of the 1960's that has ineradicably changed our world, for better or worse, depending on where you came out of it -- and where your parents and/or grandparents came out of it! Yes, the temblors of the Haight yet resound, do you really stand on some steady ground? He did, indeed, turn the world on -- "you turned it on the world that's when you turned the world around." As for speculation about "look at all the white men on the street," I never saw any ambiguity at all. The world had changed, the day glow-freaks had joined the human race and were now upright middle-class white guys & gals going about their mundane and orderly world - the same society they so rebelled against and demonized in the upheaval of the 60's. They're white bread, if you wish. They got their degrees, raised families, and forgot to "tune in, turn on, and drop out." This is NOT an allusion to cocaine or meth; meth was the great destroyer of the hippie culture of SF in the 60's, it's not a new drug by any stretch of the imagination. I know this is an old post, but I felt it aapropriate as his obit was published in the NY Times yesterday. Peace, love, man. |

| I have listened to this lp since its release in '69. This song must be considered their signature song and it means what it says. Everyone is into "The Weight" now cause of that dumb commercial. Try "Across the Great Divide" or "When You Awake" for some good cross-sections of The Band. | |
