"Pretty sure the words are "throw her dirty dollars." At least that's what it sounds like, and it's more like the Decemberists to include alliteration than to specify an amount."
Throw/thirty. There's your alliteration.
Well, it's consonance technically as the words are in the same sentence rather then next to eachother.
Also..30 pieces of silver is all it took to buy Judas.
So...there's your literary reference.

Good lord. You people take yourselves WAAAAY too seriously. Quite simply, it's a song about a mother who sells sex to feed her kids. Or...maybe not. It's a "cautionary tale". It may just simply be a parable to get kids to shut the hell up when they complain about what's for dinner. Either way, it's a funny song. It's more than likely supposed to be. Lighten up. |

All I know is that on my roadtrip to Graceland I stopped at a Best Buy to get this album (as my copies keep getting stolen) specifically to be played on my way to Memphis. It was a moral imperative. Something I've wanted to do ever since I started road-tripping. It was awesome. Highly recommended. |

Guys, settle down. The song is simply about a dude who is tired of irresponsible fathers fucking up the women out there. And anyone who gets all "this is mysogynistic" clearly hasn't dealt with how her dad affected her. |

God, you people are really retarded sometimes. Especially you Sam. The song speaks to Jesus's humanity. THAT is what spilling the blood of our children speaks to. He doubts. Just like he doubted in the bible. Um...what was Gethsemane all about? Or "Father, Father why hast thou forsaken me?" And I'm really damn tired of people talking about how Jesus might have slept with a hooker. Most scholars now agree that Magdalene was NOT a prostitute. Even so, the song merely, as someone stated earlier, describes her profession. It does not suggest that he did her. |

Without cheating and actually looking for actual explanations from him, I'd say it's about his sister. |

It's about Heroin addiction.
"Oh please give me a little more and I'll PUSH away those baby blues"
It's about what his addiction was doing to him and to everyone around him. |

It's about what happens to a girl who grows up without a dad around. Like Norah. Her dad was busy raising his OTHER daughter over in India. |

Remember when you were a kid an you dropped food on the groud but ate it anyway because you didn't know anything about germs and dirt and disease because you're a kid and kids don't think about that stuff but then you get older and paranoid and sick and sad and angry and you notice all the crap in the world? This song wishes that didn't happen and warns against it. |

It's a song that contemplates the phrase "the grass is always greener on the other side". He as much says it in the song. That's it. Dave's songs have always explored human greed for "more" in life and challenges people to accept the path that they're on as good. See Pig for further reference. |
