Pavement – Conduit for Sale! Lyrics 21 years ago
Malkmus is writing about the end of rule in Turin, Italy under the house of Savoy. Hier Proctor (not Herr Barockter) was the viceroy in the region, of Swiss/German lineage. I'm not sure of the context in which this is written, but apparently "Ray" was a local Italian nobelman who lived in Turin under the Savoy Rule and was fairly wealthy. However, and if my facts are correct, both he and Proctor were having daliances with many of the same women, and in particular, had been cockhold by the same woman. In a cheap attempt to elevate his name from the muck of public scandal, thereby saving public face, he wrote several articles in the local print media. However this thin attempt was a translucent veil to the general population. In order to keep the peace, and show his continued benevolence to the native Turins under his despotism, as well as to help his rival save face and maintain the love of the people, Proctor liberates a portion of the township under Savoy Rule. It becomes an Italian Run area in the lowliest portion of the city. The locals rush to inhabit the free land, because in their eyes living inside the Savoy ruled areas, or on the fringes of the city in their own homes, is not as satisfying as living free in a hovel. "Between here and there is better that either here or there."

Pavement – Zurich Is Stained Lyrics 21 years ago
Zurich.... Switzerland... watches. Waht's switzerland known for? Answer: Watchmakers, international banking and chocolate. Switzerland is the home of modern time pieces (hand held-"Hold" and grandfather and wall clocks "hanging" And hold me back or let me run... it's about time. You can't hold back time, it just runs on.

Next, the reference to mistakes not being traceable... swiss bank accounts are untraceable in the us and are where many known criminals hide their money.

Last, I think in general the reference to Zurich being stained is that it has this stigma bout being nuetral when it comes to alliances and extradition. And that all of Switzerland, but particularly Zurich, is tainted or "stained" as a den for theives and hustlers who hide out there with their money.

Pavement – Summer Babe (Winter Version) Lyrics 21 years ago
Song about a guy who want's his friend's ex but can't have her because she doesn't know he's even alive. He sees her in a bar, beeing all cool and stirring her drink with some cheep stogie. And when he sees her she's like ice; no expression, just a vapid, stoney exterior. The shiny roses are probably a neckalce around her neck between her breasts. Hence the protien delta strip. But she's a fucking idiot and doesn't have much in her head, there's your abandoned house. But he's hopeful in the possibility that she might notice him and his infatuation with her. He wants to approach her but he lacks the will or the ability. And she's just so cold towards any advance. She's give him the warm fuzzies (summr babe) but she's so cold towards him (winter version.) And when he sits around obsessing over her, he's love struck and heart broken. Everytime he sits around he finds he's shot (through the heart).

Pavement – Platform Blues Lyrics 21 years ago
It's "Carrie carrie carrie is so very" it's a play on the words of an old skin cream commercial for Carrie Skin Cream. Their slogan was Carrie Carrie Carrie is so very... and then some chick would say something benign about the product.

Pavement – Here Lyrics 21 years ago
First... I would have to rate Crooked Rain up there with S&E. Next, if you don't have the 10 year commemorative album (S&E : Luxe & Redux) get it! The liner notes alone are worth the buy. Finally, I think this song is about (a girl, maybe a grilfriend)losing hope in a world filled with crappy situations and crappy relationships and just saying screw it. Always sounded to me like she offed herself. All the pain, the pretending, the shitty life...everything's ending here.

Pavement – Date With Ikea Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is about the fake and plastic nature of the California lifestyle. These guys have stated over and over again in numerous interviews that they are truely THE BAND OF THE 90's and that they are a CALIFORNIA ROCK BAND. It was simply a commentary on their surroundings.

Pavement – Cut Your Hair Lyrics 21 years ago
First of all, you have the lyrics wrong. They should be as below:

darlin' don't you go and cut your hair
do you think it's gonna make him change?
"i'm just a boy with a new haircut"
and that's a pretty nice haircut
charge it like a puzzle, hit me where it muzzles
hesitate you die, look around, around, the second drummer drowned
this telephone is down

music scene is crazy, bands start up each and every day
i saw another one just the other day
a special new band
i remember lying
i don't remember why
i don't remember what
but i don't care, i care, i really don't care
did you see the drummer's hair?

advertising looks and chops a must
no big hair!!
songs mean a lot
when songs are bought
and so are you-
fetch right down to the practice room
your attention it fains a career
career, Korea, Korea

So yes, he does say Korea... it's just a ply on the sound of the word. Further, this song is mostly about the crap bands that were popping up everywhere during the post grunge expolsion in the early 90's. It was a statement about the death of glam-rock and insurgence of corporate influenced grunge. What most people don't realize and even more people try to impose, is that the meaning of most of Pavement's songs are not defined but implied on many layers. Malkmus and Spiral Stairs write in stream of consciousness and often the initial idea is simply diluted by the wandering of the mind as it skips from one logical train of thought to the next. For instance, I might say, "I found a dollar on the subway." But take that line and expand on it using subway as the key word and you might reason that I would follow it up, "sandwiches seems lonely when they're cold... and old." Follow this train of thought and you might have written a song about the emptiness of a failed relationship or the lonliness of big city life. The possibilities are endless. Keep this in mind when analyzing Pavement, DON'T THINK TOO MUCH, JUST FEEL IT!

Cheers
