| George Harrison – Got My Mind Set On You Lyrics
| 18 years ago

the song is about:
you can do anything you want but it's gonna take a lot of time and money [because time is money and anything worthwhile you want to accomplish (getting a good girl, for example) takes a lot of time -- but you can do it]. |

| Modest Mouse – Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset Lyrics
| 21 years ago
|
"Talking shit about a pretty sunset?" Why would anyone talk shit about a pretty sunset? Oh... because today's sunsets are more colorful and beautiful than they use to be back in the 1800s. Why? Pollution! Pollution helps create beautiful sunsets. And considering the anti-urbanization theme of the album... it would make sense to talk shit about a pretty sunset because it's due to pollution that is killing the world.
And stuff. |

"I don't feel and it feels great" ---- emotions sucks. I feel this song is somewhat of an allegory to life... the interstate of life. "How far does your road go? Oh no, you don't know!" You don't know when you die! All about life, yo. |

Coming from Ohio, I have to listen to all the whiners saying how "this state is so boring, I can't wait to get out of here!" And that's what this song is all about. People bailing out of Washington because (sarcastically) it's a "backward scheme." Gotta love the Mouse. |

Baileyrox... your idea is good. Except the end line "Should have killed that little fucker // Before he even had". Joseph didn't end up killing Jesus. Yaweh preordained that Jesus had to die in that fashion... thus had him killed. |

| Modest Mouse – Exit Does Not Exist Lyrics

The end sounds tripped out to me. But the "Exist does not exist" lines COULD (a stretch probably) be referring to inability to escape existence. In Christian sense... go to heaven or hell for ETERNITY and in Hindu world, you're stuck in samsara (cycle of death and rebirth). There's no way out! |

| Modest Mouse – Bury Me with It Lyrics

One more thing... "We are hummingbirds who've lost the plot and we will not move" is absolutely fantastic as a line. Ask yourself the question... "What are human beings supposed to do?" we have no instruction manual... or plot... and we're afraid to go one way or the other. It's like if someone stuck you in the middle of a soccer game and didn't tell you which goal you were defending and which goal you were attacking. Wouldn't you be afraid to go one way or the other in fear of scoring in the wrong goal?
The hummingbirds is how life seems. But that's depressing for me so I just assume the human race is positively evolving... (while we muder the planet, of course). It's not very logical but it's hard to live life feeling like it's pointless. *shrugs* |

The God aspect where Cowboy Dan shoots his down at the sky is hilarious. But really, this song has the same message as "Custom Concern"... we're building a shitty place to live. And "You know we need oxygen to breath " |

Other people's lives seem more interesting than mine... but really, they're just as boring. Most of 'em, at least.

| Ugly Casanova – Barnacles Lyrics

Barnacles are "any of numerous marine crustaceans (subclass Cirripedia) with feathery appendages for gathering food that are free-swimming as larvae but permanently fixed (as to rocks, boat hulls, or whales) as adults "
The lines a minute into the song regarding a relationship are the most meaningful and depressing...
we fit so good together
cos i knew you like i knew myself
we clung on like barnacles on a boat
even though the ship sinks you know you can't let go |

| Modest Mouse – This Devil's Workday Lyrics

Seems to be a very nihilistic message. Essentially, I can do whatever I want because "I am my own damn god". None of it really mattes what we do and we're just logs floatin' in the river. Whatever it's saying... I dig 'dis. |

Chaswick ~ I think you're right about the "freeze your blood" line. When you die a belt around your arm to inject heroin... you're essentially freezing your blood (since it is unable to move around). So I'm thinking you are correct on the shared heroin needle use. |

| Modest Mouse – Think Long Lyrics

I think the ping-poing thing has to do with the arguement going back and forth. You could THINK but you're still going to die anyway (therefore, it's pointless). But if you DO NOT THINK, then your life is pointless in the first place.

The first time it is "hopelessly hopeless". No way it is "hopeful".
"Freeze your blood" lines seems to be saying that the cold-hearted nature of someone else is causing other people to become cold-heareted too. And of course, he's saying that "this town" is shit. |

| Modest Mouse – Jesus Christ Was an Only Child Lyrics
| 21 years ago

I think a big part of the song is pointing out the huge difference between Yaweh (Old Testament God) and his son, Jesus. Yaweh was an angry, vengeful, and jealous God while Jesus was a forgiving and loving son. In the song, Jesus is just being happy and drinking from a well and this just pisses off his dad, who "should have killed that little fucker before he even had." B/c if you think about it... Jesus didn't wanna get crucified. But God MADE HIM (remember the prayer in the garden before Jesus was arrested).
Hooray for Modest Mouse! |

I think Sapphiredemon is onto a more "true meaning". Like some body seems like they've got good features but when you actually put it in context and think about it... they're essentially pointless. |

We definitely only have one chance in life and Isaac definitely seems upset to see many of his friends die (ships sailing off and sinking). And he shows the sad state of our lives, where we're just trapped (our bodies are the box and the world is the cage). |

So considering the above posts... I guess you could say that Brock is writing about the ongoing battle to the death between our rational logic and or irrational emotions. |

The song definitely seems to be about the different things that people consider "worthwhile living" (having free time, have a suit or material things, having a large paycheck) and if they don't have those they might as well be dead. Definitely seem to be clinging to things and stuff. |

The movie theater concept of heaven is great. I think the line about "God takes care of himself and you of you" <--- that might be pointing to how religious folk seem to always be praying to God in time of trouble, "God help me do this and that"... instead of just doing it themselves. |

Float On ~ Considering the deppressive nature of the Mouse's earlier songs... this is a beautiful epiphany. No matter what bad happens... we'll on float on and things will be okay. And the best part is the "float on" seems to convey a spiritual connotation. |

It seems that Brock would be helped a lot by Buddhism. In this song he's trying to pinpoint who he is and the problem is that we never are the same person as we were. We're constantly changing but many people have trouble understanding that (as I did at one point). Thus he's suffering and feels like there's something wrong with him changing his mind so much. Plus, it's not like it helps that society seems to look down on people who change. They want you to remain a stable person. |

It seems to me that this song is about how people don't get along. But just because you don't get along doesn't mean you have to hate and resent the person. You don't have to get along... but that doesn't mean you have to have all this hatred inside you. |

| Modest Mouse – Bukowski Lyrics
|
|
The concept of this song seems to be bashing the Judeo-Christian concept of God that is described by Fundamentalist Christians. God is all into divine intervention and constantly meddling in our things... thus a control freak (and not a very wonderful diety). Then Brock goes on to bash the Fundamentalists themselves by mocking them "evil home stereo"... I went to a Fundie middle school and they felt secular music was evil. Also the "see what you wanna see... you can see it all" is trying to point out the blinders they have when it comes to the "goodness" that God supposedly possesses. I think he's also tapping on the fact that Fundies see miracles everywhere.... and the truth about us humans is that we see what we wanna see. I think Bukowski (who was a total asshole in his stories... funny but still an asshole) comes in to show the similiarities between this Judeo-Christian concept of God and Charles Bukowski. |
