On-line relationship? Doubtful. I think it's pretty straightforward. She is saying that when it comes to life, love, whatever you can't always do what makes the most sense, but rather you should follow your heart. |

Maybe I wasn't clear. Yes he is talking to a girl in the song, but the "somebody" he is speaking of are the drugs or his addiction. But, again it's all really about what the song means to you. |

Actually, I think this song, like many Elliott Smith songs, are about addiction. The 'somebody' he is referring to isn't a girl, but rather the drugs/alcohol that he abuses. So basically the song is Elliott admitting to his partner that he can't carry on a relationship because of his problems. I particulalry like the lines where he is speaking as the girl:
"I could make you smile
if you stayed awhile
but how long will you stay with me baby?"
Clearly, whoever Elliott was speaking about in this song recognized that he might take his own life. Anyway, great song. |
