| The Lawrence Arms – The Disaster March Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| First of all: I definitely agree spangled. This song is definitely NOT about a break up. It's actually hilarious the way every song on this website is speculated to be about a breakup. I blame emo. I'm not an emo basher, I just blame emo. Anyway, what do you mean by straight from brendan himself? Was it in an interview or something? Just wanna know if it's for-sure accurate. | |
| The Lawrence Arms – Are You There, Margaret? It's Me, God. Lyrics | 20 years ago |

Hey, I'm so glad people are starting these posts. There are a couple corrections I'm pretty sure of: Of destruction, sorrow, fear and regret. I've heard the devil call me by my name. Believe me when I say I'm not afraid. I've heard the devil call me by my name. I think this is done pretty deliberately to link this song to the first song (The Devil's Takin' Names), and give the record that Great Story-esque cohesion. Thanks again for the post. |

| The Lawrence Arms – Like a Record Player Lyrics | 20 years ago |

Hey, thanks for the awesome post. Here are a few corrections I am pretty sure of: The time, the time to say goodbye Passed us long ago. And I would say I've overstayed my welcome, but y'know, I don't think I'm ever going home. Now I don't need a doctor 'Cause anyone can see... There's trouble on the way (Grunt) You best believe. When we go all we got is these days that we made And I don't want to waste them being wistful or afraid Okay, those are all. This is one of my favorite Larry Arms songs ever. Great upbeat without contradicting the "apathy and exhaustion" that defines the band's writing style. Awesome, hopefully I can post some more. |

| Jawbreaker – Accident Prone Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| the way i feel about jawbreaker songs is hit or miss. some work, and some fall flat. some have great choruses and boring verses, or catchy verses and annoying choruses, or are just too cheesey to bear. this one does everything right. every single note in this song makes me feel a certain way. it's ridiculous. it has such brilliant pacing. it starts of with this slow groove, and then it builds up and builds up. it knows just when to let you have it, with the insane guitar distortion in the chorus. if ever a band knew how to use guitar distortion, it was jawbreaker. especially on this cd. the layering and sounds are so unique that you could hardly confuse them for another band--quite a feat in the cookie-cutter world of punk. they also seem to have inspired so many amazing bands. bands that possibly transcend jawbreaker (in my very-humble opinion) such as alkaline trio, the broadways, the lawrence arms, the honor system, bayside, and many others. this song rocks my world. | |
| The Lawrence Arms – Quincentuple Your Money Lyrics | 21 years ago |

hey, i wrote that thing and then my friend told me i was being vague, so let me try again... "There's these kids who have dreams. There's these dreams that will grow. Until they get so goddamn big that they explode. And what's left in the smoke and the falling debris is grownups like them and losers like me. " so it seems like this whole thing is a big extended metaphor for growing up. that everyone has these huge ideas for the future, and then when everything blows up (when everyone gets older) and all the pieces fall down, the kids either turn into grownups or losers. it doesn't seem like he's saying one is right or wrong in his view, only that society looks at it this way. he is a loser because he's in a band, and he's not a doctor or a lawyer or whatever it is that society's "grownups" are supposed to do. so, i guess that's all i have to say about that. any thoughts? |

| Blink-182 – I Miss You Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| i really, really dig this song. i think it's a cool departure from their older singles, and the video is insanely cool. as far as the references to the nightmare before christmas (which, for those who do not know, is about how the king of halloweenland grows tired of his duties and attempts to replace santa claus on christmas, majorly kick ass movie that everyone should see) and angels and morgues, i honestly and truly believe that they are just trying to be dark. the whole pop punk bubble gum kid thing is out, and dark and introspective is in. case in point: alkaline trio appearing on conan o'brian and david letterman. yes, it seems death is in, and so blink-182 followed suit, so they could "mature" and "grow as artists." but shit, i'm not complaining, i think this is one of the best songs they've ever released. the only thing that annoys me is the way mark is constantly shafted of vocal duties. the first verse is amazing and the choruses (which tom sings) sound great. the second verse is just painfully bad. well until the end when mark kicks in with that bitchin "stop this pain tonight" back-up, which then catapults into the hella-bitchin chorus. i think mark should have sung both verses. i think he gets shafted in much the same manner during "stay together for the kids." i mean, when i first heard that song, i was like holy shit, this is amazing. then mark got like another 30 seconds of singing time, and the rest was tom's whiney, annoying chorus ad nauseum. again, tom can be okay when used the right way, like in the chorus of this song for instance. a little ranty? perhaps, but that's what i thought. go listen to the lawrence arms. | |
| The Lawrence Arms – Quincentuple Your Money Lyrics | 21 years ago |

this song is really great. it has a really catchy melody and bassline, and all the vocals kick ass. my favorite part is definitely: "There's a park in this city where I used to go, but now it's covered with fences and cops and lightposts. And I'd never go back even if it was the same, but it kills me to know that it's changed. " that's such a great way to describe the situation. despite our sadness over the things we lose, if we stop to think about it, we'd probably never get the chance to re-experience them anyway--or at least experience them in the way we originally did. he gets this really awesome point about life across in so few words. we all seek to recapture our happiness or youth or whatever, but it just can't be something that's forced. it's a bitch, he seems to say, but that's growing up. also, i really dig the way he extends the explosion metaphor. it's just really kick ass and smart, as his lyrics always are: after everyone's dreams explode, "what's left in the smoke and the falling debris, is grow-ups like them and losers like me." |

| The Lawrence Arms – The Ramblin' Boys Of Pleasure Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| godDAMNit, i'm so jealous. the lawrence arms have only come to miami ONCE (at least in the past couple years), and my grandpa was in the hospital at the time. i want so badly to see them live, it's killing me. hearing that caused me serious physical pain, seeing as how insanely amazing the ramblin' boys of pleasure is. it seems that the lawrence arms are one of the only bands in punk who are actually progressing with their music. almost every band i can think of has gotten worse since their first record, however the larry arms continue to amaze me time and time again. it's weird, they actually became LESS poppy. not that apathy and exhaustion was a "poppy album" per se, but it had choruses and all that stuff (it's still one of the best records, in my humble opinion, of all time), and the greatest story ever told goes back to their old minute-and-a-half-ridiculously-fast style, with more maturity and style. not on the ramblin' boys of pleasure necessarily, seeing as its a slower song, but that's just my take on the record itself. as far as the song goes, i think it might possibly be my favorite on the album. brendan and chris have such perfect vocal dynamics, the dual vocals ALWAYS work. the back-ups chris does on the "i hate it" part give me chills. it's sick. i think my favorite line is "it's a bird, it's a plane, it's a goddamn shame." the close second is: "'what's attached to a leash that it made itself?'/the punchline is the way that you've been fucking yourself." | |
| The Lawrence Arms – Another Boring Story Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| holy crap, these lyrics are so goddamn great. what makes this song incredibly cool is the way brendan makes his voice clean in the middle and then halfway through changes it back to his gravelly-roar-type-voice. it's just like "holy shit, this is the coolest man alive." what is so cool about this is that, as far as i can tell, brendan's never recorded using his voice with that clean sound other than on this song. i know he didn't when he was in the broadways, and i'm pretty sure about slapstick, but not positive. anyway, it sounds really, really great, and i kind of wish he'd use it more. it would be cool, because for the verses of songs he could make his voice all clean, and then do the choruses all scratchy and shit. it'd be like matt skiba did with "radio." i think it'd rock like hizell. i think the second verse is the best, but that's stupid, since the whole song is amazing as hell. " a smell familiarly morose." i could listen to that thing over and over and over. also, i think when brendan's voice is clean, it sounds amazing with chris's backups. | |
| The Lawrence Arms – Eighteen Inches Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| i love this song. i think it's really awesome the way that brendan points out the hypocrisy of society, while still acknowledging the hypocrisy of the "scene" itself. everyone's a fucking hypocrite, and that's okay. it's in our nature or something. no one can honestly claim to have never in their lives contradicted themselves. if you live in fear of going back on your word, that's stupid. that's the way the church built a dam on progress for hundreds of years. by being afraid of admitting that they were wrong. that maybe the world really isn't flat, and maybe putting leeches on your skin isn't the best way to cure illness, etc. pontification means nothing is an awesome line, because it's saying that just dressing up your beliefs in fancy rhetoric and self-aggrandizement is a waste of everyone's time. all the winter in chicago references also give it a kick ass tone. | |
| The Lawrence Arms – Porno And Snuff Films Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| how is this song emo whatsoever? it's not even remotely emotional. and i think most songs ARE emotional, even political ones. some people are so obsessed with calling everything emo, it's such a stupid buzzword. anyway, this song does rock, regardless of its genre (or subgenre, or whatever you assholes call it). brendan kelly has a sick vocabulary. | |
| The Lawrence Arms – Nebraska Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| these are some of my favorite lyrics of all time. it's just talking about the way that this guy chris knows is really angry with the world and the way his life is shaping up. it seems like many/most lawrence arms songs deal with growing up and the way people and relationships change over time. it's a great metaphor to show how their friendship is becoming more and more distant: "a void the size of oceans stretches out between us." i also get the feeling it's his brother, since their blood is supposed to be the bridge across that ocean. i also really love the line "there's a world of tired faces who understand this pain," because it seems to address the punk community (that's stupid, i guess), or anyone at all who feels that society has shafted them. i'm sure a good deal of lawrence arms fans have felt this way at one point or another. i love when brendan does his little scratchy backups toward the end. they rock so hard. please don't hate yourself. | |
| The Lawrence Arms – I'll Take What's In The Box, Monty Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| this song is about a guy (brendan kelly) who is disillusioned with life, talking about himself and his equally disillusioned girlfriend (or girlfriend type figure), and the point they are at in their lives. i think that they have had a long relationship together and that they're ready to just grow up past all the shit that's been bugging them. seems like he thinks he's dragging the girl down, and he's grateful that she stays with him despite this. i love the line "your smile makes me cry when it's not on there right." that's so damn good. it's always sad when someone you love has that fake smile plastered on his or her face, and you just get that awful feeling in the pit of your stomach. good times, great band. anyone who likes them, please post on some of the songs, there are barely any. | |
