| Mark Kozelek – Admiral Fell Promises Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Curious: is the she at the end addressed to the one before the "butterfly" or is the last stanza being sung after those "thousand days" they passed in their house? (I love this man so much, but sometimes I wish he'd be more clear.) I feel like it's probably the latter, which makes this song another accepted marriage proposal from Loneliness herself. | |
| The Antlers – Shiva Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| It seems like she dies here, and he takes her place in her bed with her same wound. She gets up as a ghost and leaves the ring in his hand. | |
| The Antlers – Bear Lyrics | 16 years ago |
It is about an abortion, but an abortion of commitment. Since the album is entirely about two people in a relationship, her suffering in the hospital and him taking care of her the best he can, I expect the bear is a metaphor for the newly instilled and all-consuming commitment they feel towards one another. The ominous ties of commitment, like a baby--but wild and untame as a bear cub, overwhelm them both as they return home for the first time in what sounds like forever (as "Bear" is halfway through the album). This is also implied by them being around age 20 and feeling old, but not really being old at all--the quick decisions of engagement (a ring being mentioned earlier in the album) and wearying sickness has aged them both. They come to their senses, and realize that they're "terrified of one another, terrified of what that means." In the end, they realize that they will "cut [the bear] from beneath" and end the commitment. |

| The Mountain Goats – In Corolla Lyrics | 17 years ago |
It is servant, not serpent. Yes, there's reference earlier in the album to him being a snake to her Eve, but this is a prayer to God, not to her. Additionally, the final word here is them instead of you: Here's hoping they have better luck than I had down here with them* "Them" is referencing other people in general. Kind of a "hope they do better than I did," a half-assed prayer before "all that water rushing in" and the narrator drowns. Today was the first I really heard all the lyrics and it is easily one of the most devastating songs I've heard. |
| Nina Nastasia – 4 Yrs Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| A statement from a left behind lover to the one doing the leaving. She's condemning with her words, but surrendering in her tone. I think everyone ought to give this one a listen. | |
| Nina Nastasia – Lee Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| The end confuses me a bit due to its vagueness, but overall it seems to be about a girl growing up with a boy and his single mom, and how she was best friends with him as he grew into himself as a homosexual. Other than that, I can't parse the end's meaning. | |
| Wolf Parade – Fancy Claps Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Parapet would give a bit more purpose to "sing[ing] to cracks in the cross-beams," (read: joy and celebration in aging, falling apart) but it's definitely not what he's saying. And also, this entire album is perfect. These are some wonderfully talented musicians. |
| Death Cab for Cutie – Your New Twin Sized Bed Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| So he was aiming for his lyrics to be more literal? Well, if by "literal," he meant "flat, boring, unimaginative," then I'd say he achieved exactly what he was going for. | |
| Mclusky – The World Loves Us And Is Our Bitch Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Could this song get any more incredible? God damn. | |
| The Hold Steady – Sketchy Metal Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I was always so sure he said "Jesus rolled his eyes when his dad made Jesus Jones." Either way, it'll always be a killer line. | |
| Jackson Browne – Cocaine Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Who hasn't played their own version of this song at some point in their career? Really? | |
| Marilyn Manson – Mutilation Is the Most Sincere Form of Flattery Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Best thing ever: Gerard Way’s response to this record pretty much enters the dictionary as the new definition of “ethered”: “We still haven’t found someone that has knocked us down that we need to take seriously. If Elvis Costello said we sucked we would think about it a bit.” Hahaha. True. |
| Rusted Root – Send Me On My Way Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| The best part of this song is the video. Funniest thing in life. | |
| Marilyn Manson – Mutilation Is the Most Sincere Form of Flattery Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It's funny because they are in no way trying to be like him at all. They don't claim to be "purveyors of black." What makes the bands today different is that they don't take themselves seriously, when assholes like him take themselves too damn seriously. No one cares about Marilyn Manson because of it. Shock value doesn't do nearly as much for anyone anymore, especially when the most shocking he gets is calling new bands "less bolder" and shouting "fuck you." I'm pretty sure he stole these lyrics from a Jeffree Star song. |
| Elliott Smith – Half Right Lyrics | 18 years ago |
In case anyone was curious like myself, a "double dose" is a slang term for injecting heroin. The last verse puzzles me. |
| Modest Mouse – Broke Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Am I the only one who thinks the idiot kid who was talking about "smoking ice" should be kicked off this site for his crime of stupidity for not knowing that the phrase "broke the ice" means the tension between two people has ended? Really, I don't think I've ever known anyone more dim. But as far as the song goes, yes, it's basically amazing and the meaning is pretty obvious and I think it's funny that you folks really need to try and figure it out, as if there were any debate about it. |
| The Dismemberment Plan – Time Bomb Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This is why I miss the Dismemberment Plan so much. | |
| The Hold Steady – Knuckles Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| His wit absolutely kills me. I love it. This song is spectacular. | |
| M. Ward – Eyes On The Prize Lyrics | 19 years ago |
"I'll meet the payments down the line somehow" He's talking about purchasing anything for his girl, so it's easy to hear it's payments. |
| Brand New – Two-Headed Boy Pt. 2 (Neutral Milk Hotel cover) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I like how he screws up the words a couple times, &I'm sure Mr. Mangum's stomach is endlessly unsettled at this, but it's still cute. I think Brand New will always be cute. | |
| Brand New – Luca Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Yeah. People were too anxious to figure the song out and took the lyrics from a live recording and, consequently, they were completely wrong in a lot of parts. | |
| Brand New – You Won't Know Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This is really incorrect. You'd have better off waiting until you got the real version. | |
| The Hold Steady – Chillout Tent Lyrics | 19 years ago |
"She looked just like a baby bird, all 'new and lemonshot a lot of polymer'(?)" Well I don't know what the hell that's supposed to mean, but I know that this is what he's singing: "...all new and wet and trying to light a Parliament" Craig is a ridiculously amazing poet. |
| The Hold Steady – Citrus Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Tenderness, not tenements. I'm surprised these guys aren't huge yet. Seriously. I love this band. |
| The Hold Steady – Stuck Between Stations Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Completely. I can't believe I went so long before listening to them. How come I never heard about how amazing this band was from everyone? | |
| The Hold Steady – Chillout Tent Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Probably my favorite song right now. I lovelove Craig Finn's stories. | |
| Tarkio – Devil's Elbow Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This song is spectacular, and I can't believe I waited so long to listen to Tarkio. I should've known that it would've been amazing. | |
| Damien Jurado – What Were The Chances Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This is mostly wrong, and since we can't send in corrections anymore, I'll just hope one of the admins see this: When I left you alone To fight your battles of long winters In hotels, what went through your mind? How is it that you made it? How is it that you noticed? It wasn't me who was Looking at you through Foggy glass Or windows, it was them I was out in Coolidge with my head on a counter Drinking down my chances to ever return (To anyone) To anyone No I wasn't faking it The hurt I felt was real and all that was holy Just slowly disappeared but just appeared In parking lots And truck stops The blinking lights (The blinking lights) Now I'm sinking you How the hell did I get here? Does your husband know I call you sweetheart? Does he know that I call you ...? It's not like you're cheating We're only meeting in motels and not your home (It's not like we're cheating We're only meeting in hotels and not your home) Would you change your last name to mine? (Would you change your last name to mine?) I think my kids would mind I think my kids would mind I was in the desert waving planes and burning phonebooks to a tune That was famous the year I was born Do not leave me dancing alone (Do not leave me dancing alone, pick up the phone and call me lover) Pick up the phone Call me lover (Say, "Come and get me, I am home") I am home Please pick up the phone Please pick up the phone The meaning is pretty clear, except for the first two parts. Everything after is a man metaphorically stuck in a desert and him asking this woman that he's had an affair with not to abandon him, but to join him in his solitude and dance with him (or, make the best of it). |
| Sunset Rubdown – The Men are Called Horsemen There Lyrics | 19 years ago |
"You gotta ride me to a pasture on a ride to kiss all the wings." There's no way that's what he says, but I can't afford to go CD shopping and it's really frustrating. It sounds something like "such withered wings" or something along those lines, but I don't know. Someone pleaseplease post the real lyrics if they own the CD. |
| Low – Over the Ocean Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I wish I knew what this was referring to. The only thing I can think of is that this is from the perspective of someone who's maybe on their way to heaven. | |
| The Boy Least Likely To – Rock Upon a Porch With You Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Cutest song alive, probably. Although probably any of their songs could win that race. | |
| Circa Survive – Meet Me in Montauk Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Apparently I'm not wrong when I assume fans of this kind of music are stupid; how could anyone think that movie was horrible? Haha. You crazy kids. |
| Jimmy Eat World – Goodbye Sky Harbor Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I'm pretty sure the length of the song has nothing to do with anything. What's wrong with a song simply playing itself out? With all of the rest of their electronic tinkering earlier in the album, I think it just kind of makes sense to end with a song that ends in such a way. It was also kind of the death of that phase of the band as they've not really bothered much with electrics. I'm sure, additionally, it adds to the effect of the lyrics and what one would picture as they're floating away. I just finished the book as well and the song becomes so chilling after you've placed all the words and people from the book. Very much worth reading. |
| Neutral Milk Hotel – Two-Headed Boy Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Any thoughts on why the lines Now your eyes ain’t moving now They just lay there in their climb Were left out of the booklet that otherwise has the rest of the lyrics to the song? It's odd, especially with that last word being so debatable. |
| The Dismemberment Plan – Following Through Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I'm pretty sure it's a song that is looking back on a relationship that had ended before it really got started. At the moment these two are still close or talk every now and again, but he is saying that things are different now and she can't hold him back from getting on with his life. | |
| Third Eye Blind – Thanks a Lot Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Eck, maybe not. But it sounds like it. | |
| Third Eye Blind – Thanks a Lot Lyrics | 20 years ago |
He's being terribly sarcastic when he says "Thanks a lot." And I'm pretty sure he's singing "Fire in your thighs." |
| Sufjan Stevens – The Dress Looks Nice on You Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Raving Lunatic, would you mind sending any live Sufjan songs? I really would appreciate it. Seriously, that story kind of made my life, and I'd like to hear more stories from him. | |
| Sufjan Stevens – Decatur, or Round of Applause for Your Stepmother! Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| How could he seriously use that rhyme scheme and so slickly pull together all of those events. It really just blows my mind how incredible he is at just about everything. | |
| Low – Sunflower Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Yes, but I really wish I knew what it meant. It doesn't seem like it'd be all that difficult, but I really can't place an exact meaning on it. Help? |
| Low – Cut Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Quite curious as to why Low hasn't yet recieved the millions of comments of love that they deserve even yet. This song, for instance, is incredible. | |
| The Olivia Tremor Control – A Peculiar Noise Called Train Director Lyrics | 20 years ago |
It's peculiar, not familiar. "heading out", not "going out" And this song is so quirky and fun. |
| Bloc Party – Banquet Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| If I'm not mistaken, Kele said during their show here that this song was about sex. Makes enough sense, I guess, but it's just a whole lot more blunt than I was expecting. Good song, for sure. | |
| Bloc Party – Little Thoughts Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Odd. I downloaded a copy of Silent Alarm without this on it, although when I bought it, it had it as track number 10. So I definitely have no idea what's going on. I didn't like it as much the first time I heard it, but I've come to love this song. It does seem to be about wanting to reduce your age to be with someone younger. I'm surprised a song like this got written, and even more surprised that it got written so well. |
| Jon Brion – Strings That Tie To You Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| As almost cheesy as these lyrics could be, they're just a bit too perfect for the mood and the movie and just everything. It's so sad and so pretty. | |
| The American Analog Set – Fool Around Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I think it's talking about teenage promiscuity involving a girl who spreads her promiscuity like a disease to a younger boy and the chain continues as he does the same with another girl and on and on. This song is magnificient. Lyrically and aurally as well. |
| Q And Not U – Hooray For Humans Lyrics | 21 years ago |
They're also old and incredibly unattractive. Got to love the effect music has on girl's crotches. More than often, their lyrics do make sense, just in a really obscure way. So, basically, a few of you must have an issue with comprehending. |
| Q And Not U – Meet Me in the Pocket Lyrics | 21 years ago |
Another Q and not U song where their lyrics sound pretty sexual without the real lyrics in front of you. Come on. Doesn't anyone else hear "tits all hangin' out" instead of "dance or hang it up"? Ah, I'm just amusing myself I guess. I like this song quite a bit. |
| Q And Not U – Black Plastic Bag Lyrics | 21 years ago |
If you don't know the lyrics, it definitely sounds like "In and out, in and out. Suck dick suck dick suck dick." Dick sucking aside, this is a great song. |
| The Postal Service – Be Still My Heart Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| Where is this song, anyways? I've not heard it or seen it anywhere. | |
