| Elliott Smith – No Confidence Man Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
edit: didnt get to finish my last sentence.... no confidence man - most people shooting up are terribly depressed and only feel good about themselves (having confidence) when they are high. trust me. personal experience and know many many many many heroin addicts. and to dubtiger: he didnt shoot up til 93? says who? even if elliott himself said that, it doesnt make it true. you dont go around telling the world you shoot up heroin everyday. and even if he wasnt shooting heroin in 93 and we will just call this a "fact" doessnt mean anything. nobody said the song was a personal experience of his. |

i probably allready commented on this song and someone else probably allready said this but charlie got a band in his hand, a rubber loop - a tie to shoot up. you bette wake up your friend before he wont wake up anymore - an overdose you're on it all the time - heroin/ coke / whatever he is shooting no confidence man - most people shooting up are terribly depressed and only feel good about themselves (having confidence) |

| what stasiuk, that was an amazing interpretation of the song. the way you so eligantly explained how it was about shooting up was beyond tremendously done. it would blow my mind to think you are not an esquisite writer. amazing how you failed to explain anything but a rubber loop and all that shit that procedes that one line you so delicately put. but then again it's easy, even a dumbass like you could read into this message and do a commentary like that. | |
| Elliott Smith – Needle in the Hay Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
calling some friend trying to cash some check he's acting dumb that's what you've come to expect that line reminds me of when i needed money to boot some heroin. when youre dying and desperate and you need money you could write a check to somebody who would give you money in exchange for the check because you couldnt write it to yourself and cash it because it takes two to three days to clear and you need money NOW |

| Elliott Smith – Single File Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
how the fuck did you get beer from paper cup. first off nobody drinks beer out of a paper cup. those cups are plastic. and second off, youve obviously never been to the hospital because they give you all your pills in a tiny tiny paper cup. and its a god damn line, thats why its single file. badge, subrosa... youre just dumbasses. please kill yourselves. this song is absolutely about sitting in line at a methadone clinic waiting for your dose and that if you dont take your bitter pill (methadone) than somebody else gladly will. its not like you can just hop in line at the clinic when you feel like it. theres meetings you have to attend and a waiting list. so somebody is allready waiting to take your place if you dont want your god damn pills. but there's a price you'll pay for trying hard to become whatever they are and saying whatever they say - they = people at the meetings, such as NA, or the people in your methadone clinic meetings. the clean people chair the meeting and give "hope" to the newcomer so you are trying hard to become what they are and say what they say but it comes with a price. heroin addiction is a vicious cycle let me tell you that much. now stop commenting about this song if it isnt about heroin. |

| Built to Spill – Car Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
i only looked this song up because elliott smith did a cover of it. i must say i am not impressed by the band. they have a couple good songs and i mean that litterally. (couple = two). anyhow... my favorite line in the song is: If I don't die or worse I'm gonna need a nap and this is why: dying is the supposed worst thing that could happen to someone to you "sane" people. yet he says "die or worse", implying or well actually saying, not implying, there is worse things than dying, and if neither of those happen hes gonna atleast need a nap. now to me, that implies he is almost welcoming death, and if he isnt lucky enough to have the pleasure of encountering her (death), hes gonna atleast need a fucking nap to take a break from this shitty life. |

| Radiohead – The Bends Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| to the first poster: you did a pretty baby job on nailing this one, especially considering that you said it was easy to interpret. its about who your real friends are... interpretation courtesy of radiohead themselves. i have no idea how you came up with your anaylysis, and maybe you dont know what "the bends" are. the bends is a decompression sickness from going high pressure to low pressure too quickly and you get sick. i take it he is using the term to describe manic depression. i found the song rather easy to decipher before i heard him talk about it but we all dont have more than twenty braincells. but hey, whatever you get out of the song is what you get out of the song, but thats not the intended meaning. bye ladies. enjoy. glad i could inform all you people who love "the bends" but didnt even know what the bends were or that it was an actually termanology or that it was a term and he was using it as a metaphor for manic depressive disorder. | |
| Elliott Smith – The Biggest Lie Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
i don't think its about a girl and here is why... i read somewhere that he did a lot of heroin during this album and then you have these songs all relating to heroin on his self titled album... needle in the hay, single file, good to go, the white lady loves you more, and possibly the song entitled coming up roses. now you have this one, and the lines here that get me thinking it is heroin is these: you spent everything you had wanted everything to stop that bad - with a heroin addiction you spend all and i mean all your money on heroin, trading in your car, belongings, house, etc because you want money for heroin because makes everything stop that is bad. i'm tired of dancing on a pot of gold flake paint oh we're so very precious, you and i and everything that you do makes me want to die oh i just told the biggest lie i just told the biggest lie the biggest lie -hes tired of dancing on a pot of gold flake paint to me means its only a fascade. just because it looks gold doesnt mean it is gold. just as heroin may make you feel really good and solve everything for a few seconds, it really solves nothing and only brings on more problems. just because it seems really good, doesnt mean it is, and in this case, it isnt. -then he goes on to say him and his heroin are very precious (and heroin is the most precious thing in the world when you are a junkie, it is the only thing that matters. and everything it does to him makes him want to die because of all the pain and suffering it gives him. hes sick of all the suffering which is why he took the drug in the first place but in the end he got even more suffering. then he goes onto say "oh i just told the biggest lie" which i interpret it as him saying everything heroin to him does make him want to die because of all the pain but its a lie because its the only thing that makes him feel good and his couple hours of freedom from the world is worth his lifetime of suffering, making his statement before the biggest lie he has ever told. just my take on it. nobodys really right and nobody is really wrong. |
|
| Elliott Smith – Single File Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| i only read up to one comment passed bored tom but i agree with him, the song is indirectly about heroin addiction, but more of waiting in a line for methadone hence "so help yourself to this bitter pill or somebody else will". you have to go to the clinic to get your dose of methadone, they do not let you take it home like subutex or suboxone. and everyone is tryin to get on the clinic which why he says help yourself to this pill otherwise somebody else who really wants and needs it will take your place. | |
| Elliott Smith – Untitled (Sticks and Stones) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
its deals with his addictions once again. theres more to it than that but if you take a look at the following lines: I'm running down to the corner lot It's 45 past 2 I almost forgot to show I got a date to make with Mr. So-and-So After which I won't care when you all start to bitch And moan about being alone 2:45 is about drug addiction and if you go to the 2:45 song here on songmeanings a couple people down is someone who points out why it seems that way. but anyways he chooses 2:45 for god knows what reason but we know that the time is linked to addiction. he almost missed a date with mr so and so who is his dealer/connection and once he gets that drug in him nothing matteres hence the part where he says he wont care that all the people are bitching and moaning about being alone. |
|
| Elliott Smith – Taking a Fall Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
i never thought about this song as something to do with drugs and i still really don't. the only lines that could make it seem that way are these four (which happen to be half the song so...) "Took it like medicine, horrible in a hurry Lots of plans go awry, nothing’s wrong, I won’t worry" Took it like medicine, horrible in a hurry - take heroin like your daily dose of paxil, what have you Lots of plans go awry, nothing’s wrong, I won’t worry - you could have so many plans but once you get a heroin addiction or back into your addiction all your plans do what he says, go awry. and when you are high nothing is wrong, and you have no worries (hence why he wont worry - he has nothing to worry about) then we have these two lines: "Then you won’t hear a word out of me Cause I know how indifferent someone can be" Then you won’t hear a word out of me - you usually dont hear to many words out of someone who just shot up because they have no worries and they are numb and not so much oblivious to things but just dont care to acknowledge things (usually the main focus of a junkie, to not have to acknowledge and feel things) Cause I know how indifferent someone can be - indifferent to me is used here as meaning something marked by a lack of interest or enthusiasm which goes hand in hand with heroin addiction. then we have the chorus: "Taking a fall You don’t know who to call Well, you don’t know who, do you? Taking a fall" heroin addiction is certainly taking a fall if anything is. i think he doesnt know who to call for help with his addiction, probably because it seems so hopeless, as it should and would. everyone gets mad when people turn everyone of elliotts songs into a song about addiction but what you all need to realize, whether he meant it to be about that or not, is neither here nor there. you get what you get out of a song, and if it helps you cope then it helps you cope. he wrong the song for one reason, and you may like it and listen to it for another reason. so calm down everybody. |
|
| Elliott Smith – Whatever (Folk Song in C) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| i think it is about him and someone else, probably a girl, and heroin addiction or any addiction. "except for me and you who just came to use" and he is sayin to her 'if you are gonna stay clean then what are you doing hanging out with me because i am a mess and im just gonna bring you down" | |

Artists > Elliott Smith > Happiness Submitted by dragonflower44 on January 19, 2002 activity's killing the actor and a cop's standing out in the road turning traffic away there wass nothing she could do until after when his body'd been buried below way back in the day oh my, nothing else could've been done he made his life a lie so he might never have to know anyone made his life the lie you know i told him he shouldn't upset her and that he'd only be making it worse involving somebody else but I knew that he'd never forget her while her memory worked in reverse to keep her safe from herself and oh my, nothing else could've been done she made her life a lie so she might never have to know anyone - i was always wondered if this song influenced the line in the best movie ever known as "Good Will Hunting" because it is just so similar to what robing williams says to matt damon during a session. and i also wonder that because they play elliott smith all throughout the movie. anybody else have a though on this? |

| Elliott Smith – Son of Sam Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| its definitely is not about berkowitz even though he is the son of sam. what it is about i do not know, but i am convinced it is not about him. its definitely a metaphor of some type, of what i dont know. | |
| Elliott Smith – Needle in the Hay Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| captainspoot - it most certainly about drugs. "going down downstairs to the man" - dealer "he's gonna make it all okay" - by giving him the heroin which discipates your problems to the point where nothing matters. you are just in a warm secure blanket where nothing can harm you. (take it from a junky). "im taking the CURE so i can be quiet" - cure is heroin. when you shoot heroin you are just in your own world where you can't be hurt. it is a problem free existence and probably the only place you feel totally secure and safe from the depressing, ever so cold world. | |
| Nick Drake – Been Smokin' Too Long Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
no, its clearly NOT about weed. first off - weed is not addicting. thats just a fact. i've been to rehab, it isnt addicting. you can go to rehab for weed simply because they are willing to help anybody who wants help (they dont limit it to a certain drug) . they will tell you it isnt addicting. and i've smoked for 8 years, and i would hang out with people who would sell lbs and lbs of that stuff, and i would smoke all day every day for free, and i havent smoked in over a year. "I got opium in my chimney" hes got opium in his pipe "Well when I'm smokin' Put my worries on a shelf Don't worry about nothin' Try not to see myself" thats exactly what heroin does to you, and heroin is derived from opium. |

| Elliott Smith – A Fond Farewell Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
i think this song is about heroin as well. especially because of: "veins full of disappearing ink vomitting in the kitchen sink" - its about shooting up and being dope sick. "I can deal with some psychic pain If it'll slow down my higher brain" - heroin definitely slows down your brain and id use it to slow down my brain, to not be able to think, to have nothing matter, just have that warm blanket around you in a world with no worries. everything is okay, especially when you are slamdancing with mr brownstone. "a little less than a happy high. a little less than a suicide. the only things that you really tried. this is not my life. it's just a fond farewell to a friend. it'ts what i'm like. it's just a fond farewell to a friend who couldnt get things right." -most people or atleast i know i was, are depressed, and use heroin to make it go away. to solve all your problems and like he said suicide and a happy high is the only things HE really tried. and now hes clean so its a fond farewell to the old him - the old him who couldnt get things right. everyone always rants and raves that every song he writes isnt about heroin or cocaine or drugs is this is true, but i see this one as another story of heroin and him becoming clean. and if it isnt about drugs thats fine, everyone has their own interpretation of the song and can relate to it in different ways. its open for interpretation so take the meaning of the song as you please. |

| Elliott Smith – King's Crossing Lyrics | 20 years ago |

just wanted to add... "and every wave is tidal if you hang around you're going to get wet" i think he is saying if you hang around youre going to get addicted to heroin (wet by the wave that is tidal) and saying that heroin is going to be a tidal wave as a result if you hang around. "it don't matter cause i have no sex life all i want to do now is inject my ex wife" i believe his ex-wife is heroin since he was clean for this album. and all he wants to do is inject heroin. just some thoughts. |

| Elliott Smith – Pretty (Ugly Before) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| you are right. every elliott smith song is not about drugs. this one though, happens to be about drugs. sunshine is slang for cocaine. and "theres no nighttime, its only a passing phase" is so true when you are a cocaine addict. i cant count how many times i havent slept and was awake the whole night to see the sun rise and to look at the clock and have it say 1 in the afternoon and yet i havent slept. | |
| Elliott Smith – King's Crossing Lyrics | 20 years ago |

fore777 i also thought of heroin when he said the needles on the christmas tree, i guess only a junkie would think that though. also i thought of that because he says a skinny santa (heroin makes you skinny. sure you eat a shitload of candy because the heroin drops your blood sugar, but you lose a lot of weight) and the last reason i thought it was heroin because of the slurred words and him being only to understand every other one. you nod out and start slurring words and just stopping in sentences. |

| Bright Eyes – Lua Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
i wont say you are wrong, but i highly doubt its an eating disorder if the rest of the song is about drugs, and alcohol. i will break it down for you. "you're looking skinny like a model with youe eyes all painted black" - you dont eat when you are a heroin addict - the only thing you eat is candy to bring your blood sugar level up. trust me i know. "keep going to the bathroom always say you'll be right back" - the girl i was always with would always go into the bathroom to do heroin, i would do the same. well it takes one to know one kid i think you've got it bad - it takes an addict to know an addict, and he knows she has it bad, maybe because hes had it bad before, i know i have. "but whats so easy in the evening by the morning's such a drag" its easy to get high in the evening but in the morning its a drag waking up to those withdrawals, and trust me, they hurt like no other. have fun |
|
| Bright Eyes – Lua Lyrics | 20 years ago |

you guys all mentioned drugs but failed to mention: you're looking skinny like a model with youe eyes all painted black keep going to the bathroom always say you'll be right back well it takes one to know one kid i think you've got it bad you get really skinny from drugs, and the girl i liked would allways go to the bathroom to do some heroin. and like he says, it takes one to know one. so , it may sound like an eating disorder but i dont think so. |

| Eminem – Drug Ballad Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| theres no such thing as a clean drug addict. you shouldve started off with "i was a drug addict but i am clean now" but anyways. his information on X isnt accurate. pure MDMA might have a future in hospital as morphine does. it was first discovered by the germans in 1913/1914's and then in the 70's it was used in america for marriage counseling and then the army actually used it as a truth serum. but anyways his message is do whatever you want because its your life and he says he wouldve done more shit than people said that he shouldnt. if you have ever taken E it is probably the greatest thing ever invented. Molly (pure form of MDMA) is a lot healthier too and neither are addicting. i have tried many drugs and i can not think of too many that would kill you from trying but then again you need a reliable person supplying you with these. | |

| Elliott Smith – Ballad of Big Nothing Lyrics | 21 years ago |

ernt. wrong. you make your own decisions but the song is about drugs. "all spit and spite you're up all night and down every day" -you're up all night from coke and down every day from heroin "a tired man with only hours to go just waiting to be taken away " -tired from being up all night from the coke and hes waiting to be taken away by the stranger who is a drug dealer. he is waiting for his fix. "getting in to the back of a car for candy from some stranger " -candy is cocaine. it is referred to as nose candy and you will take your fix from anybody hence the stranger. "watching the parade with pinpoint eyes full of smoldering anger" -you get pinpoint eyes from heroin. they become pindrops. "you can do what you want to whenever you want to you can do what you want to there's no one to stop you" -its your choice to do the drugs. no one can stop you from doing it but yourself |
