Who is the mystery tramp? A drug dealer? A synonym for drugs itself? |

| Bruce Springsteen – Johnny 99 Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Woops, my bad, of course the line "debts no honest man could pay"" does not reappear in "Badlands" but in "Atlantic City". | |
| Bruce Springsteen – Born in the U.S.A. Lyrics | 20 years ago |

Listen to the alternative version on the "18 Tracks" album, it makes the meaning much clearer and is much better. I am from Germany and many people here who don't know Bruce think he's a "mouth-breathing, non-questioning" (to quote stealthbeetle) patriot because of this song. I think it was a big mistake to choose this version instead of the alternative one for the "Born in the U.S.A." album, but I guess then he wouldn't have become as famous as he did. |

So Ralph/Johnny shot that night clerk and after that wants to shoot himself outside the Club Tip Top right? I always understood it the way that they named him Johnny 99 after he shot the clerk but before he got sentenced. And the judge knows of that nickname and that is why he sentences him for 99 years of prison. "Prison for 98 and a year and we'll call it even Johnny 99" is such a great line, I love this song. Bruce uses the line "I had debts no honest man could pay" in "Badlands" as well. |

| Bob Dylan – The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest Lyrics | 20 years ago |

Well the last verse implies that Dylan wants you to explore the world and not just stay in the same place all the time. But all the lyrics before that verse have pretty much nothing to do with that... Another Dylan mystery song! Still a great song and I love the ironic connotation it has. |

| Mitch Ryder – Ich bin aus Amerika Lyrics | 20 years ago |

I love this song, Mitch's unique speech rhythm and pronunciation give it such an ironic connotation. And he was right with the last refrain, "For if he should die/In comes the Bush CIA". |

Damn, just writing and thinking about it drove the tears into my eyes. "Is a dream a lie if it don't come true Or is it something worse" Incredible. |

An absolutely beautiful song, especially the live version from the "Live 1975-85" Album where Bruce talks about his relation to his dad and how his Dad always told him that the army would "cut your hair and make a man out of you". After he got his physical for vietnam and failed he came home and his dad said "Where have you been?", Bruce replied "I went to take my physical". His dad asked "What happened?". "They didn't take me". And his dad said: "Thats good". And after that those seconds of silence until Bruce starts playing harmonica like a god. This version is the only song that has ever made me cry. |

| Neil Young – Crime In The City Lyrics | 21 years ago |
|
One of the greatest Neil Young Songs! Not much to tell about, pretty easy to understand. Line 1 and 3 are of course about the same cop, he has enough of the "crime in the city", he even get's paid by a 10 year old, so he takes the law in his own hands and barricades himself in his bungalow. This song is wonderful and always gives me a rush, just a masterpiece of songwriting! |
