| Green Day – Wake Me Up When September Ends Lyrics

Has anyone else made the connection between this and "Eternal September" (look it up on Wikipedia for more info)? Basically Eternal September is a computer hacker reference to the insurgence of new Usenet users that typically came in small waves every September when new freshmen came to college, prior to September 1993. In 1993 AOL opened Usenet to the general public, which at the same time that the Internet was gaining momentum outside of the university setting. The result was a continual influx of new users who were ignorant to Usenet conduct, and caused user experience to decline perpetually. Since then, it is said that September 1993 still hasn't ended-- for example, November 8, 2004 is September 4087, 1993. The time when users will become sensible, mature and responsible is referred to as October 1st. For me, the connection exists because of ~2001 when the industry started promoting the pop-punk bands like Good Charlotte and Sum 41 in the main stream. The term "wake me up when September ends," therefore, would be a perfect reference. The main question is, is this a real connection? |

I think this song is about a guy with a female friend who's always looking for the perfect guy, falling in love, and screwing it up... and he's always there being the good guy to her.. he won't say anything about the guys unless she asks, sort of letting her make her mistakes... but he wishes she wouldn't be afraid to give him a try, though. it's happened so many times that he is starting to believe everyone else, that she will continue to screw up and never learn her lesson. |

he doesn't know if they are only together because they are comfortable, or if he really loves her. He would jump into the "fucking ocean" aka leave her if he could be sure that's what he wanted, but he isn't.
haha, just kidding... but maybe not. |

A good friend of mine has spent her whole life putting school ahead of everything. Now that she is in the top school in her feild, and she doesn't even know if it's what she really wants. She doesn't want to be a career bitch anymore, so this song sort of reminds me of that. She has an awesome family and friends and she never realized it until she was off to college, away from it all.
Just an observation, I see the recurring theme of satellites coming through, and I am guessing it's influenced by Billy Bragg's song A New England... "Is it wrong to wish on space hardware?" which Kris actually did a cover of. The theme also came though in All you can ever learn is what you already know... "all these satellites and shattered dreams" Im interested in knowing if these were all influenced by the same thing. |

To me this song is about a guy in a relationship that he isn't really happy with, and he's been living the lie just because he didn't want to hurt this girl. I think he finally stopped biting his tounge when it started bleeding, when he realised it was hurting him so much. he finally decided to just use his new found intuition to stop it because there was no easy way to get out of the situation, so it was time to take the direct route because it made sense. |

Yea, I think the other version sounds more like the mood of this song... turn off your radio small venue type, instead of big studio... also it's silly that they changed "explosives" to "guitar" is there any specific PC issue that would have caused them to changed it? please don't say it was 9/11... please... |
