I think, also, the relationship the song speaks of has been something that's been ongoing for a while, as evidence is given of "My very soul has to bleed this time. Another hole in the wall of my inner defenses"...so it's been a very long and hard road for the both of them. I might even go so far as to say that the two have never been together, but it's something they have both wanted and now is clearly not going to happen because of her actions. |

I think this song also is saying that, while the singer does love the gal he's singing to, he knows it can't work out and he can't be with her. Thus the "I"ll be the greatest fan of your life"...as if he's watching her from a distance, sadly, hoping for the best for her. |
