^Knew that line sounded familiar it probably is a reference to that Billy Bragg song.
However, doing a little internet stalking revealed that lead singer Patrick Stickles was a literature major at Ramapo College in New Jersey and went to graduate school at Harvard (and probably lived next door in Somerville which he mentions in the song by name and zip code). So the trip is quite literal, but there is allegory of present day America tied into Civil War references about how we can only defeat ourselves and are all slaves to something. Well done, Patrick. |

It's DEFINITELY "adobe slats". They're Portuguese roofing tiles. Essentially he's saying "four walls and a roof over our head." Confirmation from a commenter that asked Avey Tare:

if i recall correctly he said in concert that this song is about an adult sending a letter back to his eight year-old self. the lyrics certainly detail a failed relationship.
glad to see the "she(he)" put in there--i love the dichotomy between the male and female singers and heard this interpretation myself. |

The title (a play on ontology and thanatology, the studies of life and death, respectively) and lyrics ask what your last thought will be with imminent death approaching. The CD is about a broken marriage, making this a lamentation of being alone when we could die at any moment. |

Great song, one of my fav. by JLC. I think the song has to do with unhappiness over holding someone down in a still pose. The verses talk about a portrait, and someone looking at this portrait and seeing how limited it is--like a false constraint. in the chorus he talks about living in something lively and active: a magazine (title/theme of the whole album). the whole song is almost saying forget about trying to capture that one moment but live life in the present. |

In the lyrics verse it claims the verse is "The stars that fill the sky ". When I listen to the album version Dave definitely says "suns". I think it is a lot better with suns too, it holds a lot more meaning considering the next line talks about other life.
You know, I hate it when critics say DMB's lyrics are unsophisticated and poorly written. I've always found them to be awesome. This song's lyrics are AMAZING. They say so much and provide so many great images. |
