This song is truly amazing. However, upon listening to it, one will find that it's a bit hard to hear them.. as if the background instruments and music is almost too powerful. Nonetheless, the lyrics top it off, making it one of my favorite songs by In Flames. Pity that not many people have commented - the lyrics are so beautiful and expressive.. I adore how they use personification to explain the torment of whoever the song is aimed towards ["Shattered hope became my guide / And grief and pain my friends."] Extremely deep, it shows a despair that has lasted for many years, and a yearning to be set free of this agony and suffering. I could go into more detail, but I'll let others take a stab at it.. see what they think. ~kat |

This song makes me teary everytime I listen to it. Several interpretations come to mind. I believe it could be about God, however it seems a bit unlikely. As for my personal opinion, it's a man/woman who is deeply infatuated with someone [could be that they're in a relationship with that person, or that they yearn for one] and this man/woman would like to listen to their love's breathing rather than hearing them speak. This person considers that special someone their angel ["'Cause I want nothing more than to sit outside heaven's door .."] It could also be the stages in recovering from a breakup, and how he/she wishes to be able to hear their old love's breathing, and to put the shattered pieces of his/her heart back together. I think the lines "can you look out the window/without your shadow getting in the way" probably means that whenever the man looks out the window, instead of seeing the possibilities out there and focusing into reality .. he's trapped inside himself - trying to figure himself out. "Building a Mystery" means that he's building a mystery ... and the mystery is himself. This is why the woman complains about him - because he hasn't truely found himself yet. However, the woman is still attracted to him .. because he's unique. I also have other interpretations of the song .. but that's generally what i feel it's about. I hope i helped LoriAnn! ~katie |

Wow, i agree with all you guys. Wonderful interpretations. It's about a man who, basically, is "bulding a mystery" in terms of finding himself. And as meltbolt said, it is about a woman complaining about her lover .. and it's also about her be attracted to him as well. I just adore this song, such a great relaxing beat and awesome lyrics. i dunno. i like the lyrics a lot ... but i was kind of disappointed when i listened to it, it wasn't all that good. maybe i donwloaded the new version or something. i'm not saying i hated it, it just wasn't that great .. the lead singer cracks his voice a lot. i dunno - nobody yell at me, okay? anywho - i just love the lines: "More nights of hugging my pillow, oh Replaying memories." great lyrics. and yes, there is emotion - lots of it. maybe if i listen to it again i'll feel differently. *shrugs* ~katie |

the beginning of this song sounds somewhat like the beginning of "My Sacrifice" by Creed. this song is slower than their other songs (ex: "Payback" & "Whole") .. but it's still really good. i like the lyrics, and the basic layout of the song. very well done. ~katie |

definetely describes what it feels like when you break up with someone .. and after all the tears and feeling like the world is over .. you know that theres always tomorrow. i really like this song - along with the many other avril songs. it digusts me that just because some of us listen to her music for inspiration or to feel relaxed, others must point and stare and refuse to get it through their thick-minded skulls that we ENJOY her music (not necessarily her as a person, but i personally feel that her lyrics are something i can relate to.) i'm not trying to start anything .. but just reading what some of you have said got me upset. maybe if you listen to some her music (ok, so "complicated" wasn't that great ... but that doesn't give people the right to judge her music/lyrics with just that in mind.) and just because some of us listen to her music does not mean we are "teeny boppers." so - uhh .. there. yay, i released my anger.
