Suzanne Vega – Tom's Diner Lyrics 22 years ago
Ok enough of this "OMG!!! COOL Song!!! do-do-do-do-SHUT UP!" This song is apparently WAY too deep for any of you chillins to understand. Its pretty obvious, pretty simple, but pretty meaningful. She is simply talking about being lonely and invisible to the world. One of the first lines, "And he fills it only halfway/and before I even argue/he looking out the window at somebody coming in"---showing how the man didn't really notice her existance. They kiss hellos and she turns her head (a bit of irony, she tries not to notice them when they don't know she's alive) Second example; the actor in the paper is no one she has heard of, only fueling her alienation. Third example; the woman observing her reflection not noticing what's behind the window, again ignoring the existance of another and again, our narrator tries not to notice someone not noticing her. All examples of being nothing in a busy world, passed over without a second glance. Suzanne is attempting to show her pain of being "simply another face in the crowd"

Radiohead – True Love Waits Lyrics 23 years ago
Thom, when asked how he came up with the line lollipops and crisps, "cause it meant a lot to me that out of all the things in the world to choose you chose those two items i read an article about a child who was between 5-8 yrs old who was left on his/her own for a week in a house when his parents left on hoilday and he lived on lollipops on crisps. true." (01/04/00)

Thom also commented on the meaning of the line "I'll dress like your niece," saying "the difference between young and old when people start to dress sensible and act their age. this person is offering not to do that to keep the other. alles klarr?"

Ben Folds Five – Brick Lyrics 23 years ago
I think that yes, this is a song about an abortion. But there must be a much deeper meaning. I believe he wanted it to be simple, but he complicated his meanings when he included the line, "For the moment we're alone/She's alone/I'm alone." From the moment we are born we are all alone. No matter who touches our lives or who loves us, or who dies because of us, we are all completely, utterly alone and there is nothing to do to change that. I think the singer realized this at that moment in the song. He realized that no matter how much he loved her and she loved him, they were still alone.

Finch – Awake Lyrics 23 years ago
Ok Fletch...thanks for your um..."insightful" comment, but I'm going to have to disagree in some aspects. Ok first off, this song is NOT about sex (um...yea this comment is mostly for princess) I give Finch enough credit to not be that obvious and slightly deep enough to have alternative meanings for their lyrics. Now songs are open to interpretation, but I think what this song meaning is clear: it is about forgiveness. So the girl has definitly hurt the guy "Keep breathing to feel something /Take my breath all away". And he confronts her, bringing everything into the open: "Can you stay tonight?/Silence broken with words unspoken...The air is clearing again". Now the lines, "Now she's on her knees" and "Can I beg for one more she says" has NOTHING TO DO WITH FELLATIO! Its not her getting on her knees to suck dick, its her begging for his forgiveness. And begging for one more isn't referring to her eagerness to give head (like some ppl fletch ;}), its her begging for one more chance. Ok the water into wine part...clearly a biblical allusion. At a wedding in the city of Galilee, Jesus turned water into wine (John 2:9). This is considered to be Jesus's first sign of "glory" that proved to his desciples that he was the true Messiah, sent by God to forgive their sins. And since Jesus is considered by billions around the world today as the absolver of sins it is clear that the writer of the song is mentioning something he did in reference to forgiveness. So without a doubt this song is about forgiveness NOT sex. She hurt him and lied about it, she's begging for forgiveness and another chance and he wants to forgive her but is unsure if that is possible for him to do.

Sorry about the gender mix-up. Well the one I saw was on mtv and it flashed back and forth between him and the band singing in a studio-like area and his relationship (or lack there of) with the girl.

Ok you guys all have really...um...great points about the hair and all. But have any of you seen the music video? Anyone want to explain it? He finds her passed out in the bathroom and takes her to the hospital and then it shows him at a funeral. So what? Did she die? Anyone wanna clear this up? My thought is that she died and he felt betrayed and yea that her hair around his apartment reminded him constantly of her and how she was gone. Just my thoughts.
