Radiohead – There There. (The Boney King of Nowhere.) Lyrics 21 years ago
To Mothra666: I don't really care what you think of Radiohead or if you want to express a negative opinion of them here or anywhere else. But if you post a comment with something like "how can you listen to this shit" on a board where most everyone else likes the "shit" in question, you have to expect a negative reaction. Bottom line, free speech rules, but don't act all surprised when your mouthing off creates a similar reaction in others.
Now that I've made it clear that I'm not trying to censor anyone else, I'd like to say that I really like this song and the rest of "thief" even though it definitely is much less "listenable" than their other stuff in the sense of being less melodic and farther from traditional western music. And yes, I do enjoy music that's heavy on the melody too, in fact I used to play classical music. I like it because it produces an emotional reaction in me even though it doesn't really have a melody, unlike say, techno music, which (usually) doesn't produce much of anything in me except a mild feeling of being high, althought it can be fun to listen to. I admire Radiohead for being willing to experiment with something like this even though they know that fewer people will "get it" and they'll probably lose some fans.

The Beatles – Dear Prudence Lyrics 22 years ago
Why does everyone think this song is uplifting? It always makes me feel like I'm going to cry (which isn't easy to do). Maybe it started out as an actual persuasion, as discussed above, I don't know the whole story, but I think the final version is much broader. "Prudence" could be a reference to people who are "prudish", and I'm not talking about sexually, but way too serious and uptight, or maybe chronically depressed, or too caught up in pop culture to realize the joy of life. They never do anything for enjoyment, they just stay inside brooding (actually or metaphorically). John is initially very hopeful, he expounds on the beauty of the world and how wonderful everything is, but as prudence continues to ignore him he ends up pleading "won't you let me see you smile?" I guess that's an open ended way to finish, but for some reason I get the impression that the evils of life win out and prudence never smiles. Maybe it's because I've seen "prudence" in way too many people who never think positively, and quite possibly never think about anything constructive or creative at all.

The Beatles – Hey Bulldog Lyrics 22 years ago
I definitely could see this as a stab at Paul, but how about a broader stab at the "childlike" members of society we all have to deal with? They look daunting with their four ugly heads, but if you don't cower in fear when they come after you (and instead pop out of a few pianos at them), you will realize that their jack-knife holding hands are wet with fear and confusion. Maybe it's my natural tendency to turn everyhting political, but I would consider the possibility that this song is a big "FUCK YOU" to all the politicians and corporate CEO's out there that think they have us cornered. The movie's strongly political nature lends a little more credibility to this theory; the blue meanies are obviously the negative elements of modern society forcing conformity and overall "blueness" on everyone, also, having "the glove" as the head meanie's favorite tool of destruction speaks volumes about the negative power of fingerpointing and scapegoating. But when someone comes to wake up the inhabitants of pepperland it doesn't take much to create a fullscale revolution and even bring the meanies over to the good side. Well, I'm ranting and overanalyzing now, but on a final note, I'll say that we DO live among the blue meanies and they DO hate art and music, and they DO think that they can win by only giving "no" for an answer. They're well entrenched and well funded, but their arrogance and ignorance will be their downfall. Peace.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Galapogos Lyrics 23 years ago
the line "too late to turn back now, i'm running out of sound" has always sent shivers of emotion through me since the first time i listened to the song. i think its a metaphor for Corgan's life, hes being crushed by some horrible choice or burden and doesnt know if he has enough sound (ie: emotional strength) to turn the song around into something good, hes resigning himself to spend the rest of his life slipping away from anything good. whoever hasnt felt that way at one point must have been sedated through their entire period of adolescence.

Weezer – El Scorcho Lyrics 23 years ago
i dont understand why so many people knock pinkerton as being too jaded, the cd and esp this song is the ultimate scared teenage boy (or girl i suppose, but im a guy so thats what generally comes out) anthem. i spent most of my time in french my junior year listening to this song through headphones hidden under my handy dandy long hair and staring at the girl sitting in front of me who id had an on/off crush for since 9th grade. i guess it wasnt exactly the same situation as in the song since i actually did have the nerve to talk to her atleast, if not ask her "to the greenday concert", partially due to my shy demeanor and partially because i knew that it would never work out since we ran with different crowds and had totally different life outlooks. well, "in a more perfect world..." and all that nonsense. now i finally understand the "cio cio san" part and the rest of the diary section, yay!

Radiohead – Idioteque Lyrics 23 years ago
the first time i heard this song was from my friend matt. he handed me his discman and said i had to listen because its the prettiest song he's ever heard. this is coming from a guy who A)is regarded by me and most other people who know him as having great musical taste, and B)never before described anything to me as being "pretty". i immediately told him he had to burn me the cd, which he did but screwed up a little so that this song was on tracks 8 AND 9, the funny thing is, i almost like that cd better than the correct copy i got later because if you play it on random "idioteque" plays twice as often as the other songs (although i do have to sacrifice hearing "morning bell" when doing this). i always thought of it as referring to people stealing ("take the money..." of course) and corporate "shenanigans" and other human threats tearing the world apart and forcing people into bunkers ("women and children first") or onto "liferafts" from a sinking "ship" (ie: earth) but i never considered the nuclear war idea, it does seem to fit, maybe "laugh until my head comes off" and "swallow till i burst" are references to nuclear fission and reaching critical mass, or maybe its just the info from pysics tests that i crammed too hard for floating around in my head (i would consider this the more likely explanation so dont go trying to quote me and start a horrible chain of rumors or anything). well its past 3 am now and ive been reading lyrics for most of the night so i should probably get some sleep so i have enough energy to do something besides mess with my computer tomorrow.

Radiohead – Electioneering Lyrics 23 years ago
definitely my favorite song on ok computer. in my opinion one of the best political songs ever made, especially because it was written so artfully that it could be pulled off with NO swearing, i have no objection to swearing in songs and no love for censorship but so many "political" songs of late are nothing but strands of words that have to be edited out when they get played on the radio. one of the saddest things i ever heard was some kids practicing a RATM song for a school talent show, they were actually playing pretty well but when they got to the end the singer had to yell "SUCK you, i wont do what you tell me!" into the microphone, even those who dont know what the lyric is supposed to be should be able to figure out what its really supposed to be (change one letter in SUCK). i wanted to go up to them and ask with a big sarcastic smile: "did you tell them to go "fudge" themselves when the administrators told you that your song needed to be edited?"

Nirvana – Lithium Lyrics 23 years ago
when i first heard this song i liked and it has grown on me more even through the negative emotions ive managed to get associated with it (i suppose this is fitting with the paradoxical nature of the song itself). one of my first girlfriends decided to pronounce this "our song" while we were making out, unfortunately i also started to realize at that point that the only reason i was in that relationship was because i was young and naive (and "...too busy actin' like im not..." to borrow some words from kurt) and didnt know how to say no when she asked me out. luckily i returned to my senses and painlessly broke up with her a couple days later, so this song makes me think of being hurt (or atleast made uncomfortable by my own stupidity), confused and then emancipated.
by the way, isnt "christian punk" a slight oxymoron? if you refuse to listen to good music because its calling THE western symbol of discipline, order and conformism (god) a bad name, then what exactly are you rebelling against? not that i have anything against christians, just the ones who misconstrue it (or any religion or way of thinking) as a set of rules that EVERYONE should follow.

i dont think kurt meant this as a "serious" political song. anyone who puts something like "apocalyptic bastard" in a song has to be sticking their tongue in their cheek
