I always felt there was something very sexual about the second verse, I don't know.. this song is a strange one, I think it's about obsession more than love. It's saying "i'll do all these things for you" but the "if you make me your religion" is slightly creepy. All the religious symbolism I find slightly spooky too. It's creepy, but a brilliant song none the less. |

Standing on the shoulders of giants leaves me cold - This to me sounds like "Being put on this pedistal, given this adoration, I don't deserve it.. I don't enjoy it. It leaves me numb. As for the rest, i'm not sure. Perhaps it's about being worshipped but not actually listened to "My kingdom for a voice". People blindly follow but don't actually listen |

I think this is about being used and wanting to forget it. "you want a room with a fire escape" suggests their partner just wants to have sex and leave. I think it's about being in an unequal relationship and not feeling like you can escape. It screams of regret "call my name, here I come. your last ditch lay, will I never learn?" The other person calls, and they come running, just to be used again. The line about ugly girls suggests low self esteem, perhaps she feels she can't do any better? |

Personally, not being christian, I always just saw this song as a beautiful beautiful love song. It's a song about undying unconditional love (be it to a god or to a person). It's truely beautiful and always brings a tear to my eye. I'll always see it as a love song, not neccisarily about anyONE in particular, more just a song celebrating the emotions of love etc etc. It certainly is the most powerful and emotional song i've heard in a while. I think the lyrics are just as powerful regardless of who they're talking about. To another person, you're telling them that they are everything to you, they are your purpose and that's romantic and deeply moving. I don't know, I think it's a more beautiful song if relating to romance than religion, but that's just me. Certainly it's a celebration. |
