How about you probably just heard of Conor Oberst a week ago when you saw him play on Letterman. Go away.

Perfect interpretation, acoustic. Very nicely stated. That's exactly what I was trying to say but you managed to do it in one sentence. Props to acoustic.

Bright Eyes – Lover I Don't Have to Love Lyrics 22 years ago
I agree that the reason that Conor uses the phrase "I want a boy..." is because he is giving the girls point of view, which is, like I said, Conor's usual theme of using a universal message. He writes songs that everyone can relate to. This isn't the first time that Conor has written songs using two different people point of views. Check out Desaparecidos songs "Man and Wife" the former and the latter to see what I mean. I didn't actually mean that because Conor used that line that he was bisexual, loosen up.

Desaparecidos – What's New for Fall Lyrics 22 years ago
I don't want any past, present or future bands of Conor Oberst to get big like some of you seem to think they should. I remember seeing Chris Carrabba play way way way way back in the day when he had his long hair and was playing alone at some half packed restaurant where noone even so much as glanced in his direction - it was awesome. Now, you couldn't pay me to go hear him play due to his cult like following of pre teen, zit faced little girls whose never ending "I love you Chris!" or "Chris, I want to have your baby" chants ring louder than any music played the entire time. Not to mention the change the media has on an artist once they get their tight grip around them. If you like bands like Bright Eyes, Desa, Cursive, The Good Life and even Commander Venus the way they are, then do me a favor and don't email MTV and beg them to play their music. Or maybe you like going to shows where 12 year olds outnumber any other age group there. It's a shame, Ghost man on third, that bands like TBS and BN seem to have fallen prey to the media, seemingly accidentally. I also saw both of those bands play together - luckily before they became the biggest craze out there.

Hey, I found this really cool quote from someone who reminded me a little of Conor Oberst. Their thought process is similar and if you appreciate Conor's general song ideas in Des, then you may find a liking to this artist as well. Here is the quote: "I like to blame my parents generation for coming so close to social change then giving up after a few successful efforts by the media and government to deface the movement by using mansons and other hippie representatives as propoganda examples on how they were nothing but unpatriotic, communist, satanic, inhuman, diseases. And in turn, the baby boomers become the ultimate conforming, yuppie hypocrites a generation has ever produced." - Kurt Cobain.
A little odd, don't you think, that Conor began writing songs such as Manana etc. long after Kurt's existance on this earth? Could it be possible that Oberst looks up to Cobain? Afterall, he does seem to have adopted some of Cobains concepts. I know that some of you may need therapy at the thought of Conor actually acknowledging some of Kurt's notions as valid - oh the horrificness.

Karmas, Conor often writes lyrics that everyone can relate to; they aren't very gender oriented alot of the time. That way anyone who is listening to the song can feel a direct connection. In the song "Lover I Don't Have to Love" conor writes the "I want a boy" line to specify that guys and girls alike can fall victim to the feelings mentioned in the lyrics. Or Conor may just be bi - either way, does it matter?

I don't think that this song is about Conor's desire to feel love, JeLy. I think it's the exact oppisite, hence the title of the song. After being hurt repeatedly, everyone eventually comes to a point where they're just too sad to give a fuck. It's a point where they live to drink, drink to get drunk, get drunk to have sex, and have sex to feel something other than absolute nothing. I think that this song correlates well with "A poetic retelling...." I especially like the drug connotation. It perfectly describes the depressed state that Conor so often writes about.

Bright Eyes – From a Balance Beam Lyrics 23 years ago
Does noone see the spiritual meaning behind these lyrics? I personally feel like he is trying to express salvation (in the Christian sense) as best as he knows how. For some reason he wanted to change something about himself, so he did, he threw away all the old people that he used to be, all the past characters he played, only to find out that this newfound freedom actually caused bondage. He is no longer self controlled but rather seemingly controlled by some higher being - God. He realizes that once he was a prisoner to his old self and is now a prisoner to God. That's my best shot.

Everyone thinks that you can have casual sex without it affecting you, but eventually, you realize that noone actually likes you.

I totally think that this song is about a brothel. It seems like he is writing about someones journey to find satisfaction. Sex is an amazing thing. However, in the situation mentioned in the song, by trying to fill this void it is only made larger. The person is to the point that they don't even care if they live or die.I don't think that this person is so much wanting sex but something else. They go to this whore house to feel loved, to feel someones arms around them, to feel the ultimate form of bond yet the only feeling the person ends up having is a greater sense of lonliness. It's a sad song, really.

The Stryder – Breathe Lyrics 23 years ago
ive never heard this song, but i like the words. to me its about being in love and not caring if the whole worlds against you - who needs their approval anyways? my favorite line is "youve got some beautiful eyes" its so random but so fitting. i like it when people write songs and state observations theyve made.
