Here's my take on it...The background commentary made by the elderly man during the interlude makes it clear that the song is about World War 2. Considering the anti-war message found in The General, I think it is safe to say that this song is also anti-war. I think it is about a soldier who would rather hide is safety than fight in the war. ("Deadman told me where I am to hide") The place "where it's all even" is probably heaven, since the "deadman" is waiting there. That's my take on it. What do you think? |
