the song title isnt a pun, you fuck! a pun refers to a play on words using a subtle connection between the words to create a slightly ambiguous statement. by using the word "tributary" they are effectively using a synonym for the word "river." for example, if i said, "jack is wrong," then you said, "jack is incorrect," you wouldnt have just made a pun. you would be saying the exact same statement using a different word with the same meaning. a good example of a pun would be, "fighting global warming is cool," because global warming is not only a popular theme, but it also refers to heat. "cool" on the otherhand not only refers to social/cultural acceptance of what is hip, but also to how cold something is, thus making the subtle connection of words with an ambiguous meaning. |

i just recently discovered this song, and my first impression was that the term "dead flowers" is something like a girl saying "s still care about you, but i not enough to be with you." a dead flower. a nice gesture, but worthless in the long run. thats why he says "ill be in my basement room, with a needle and a spoon, and another girl can take my pain away." my impression was that the whole thing was that a girl thought it wouldnt work because they are from different sides of the track, but she still loves him, just not enough to get by that fact. |

i like cquenthers 1st idea of this songs meaning, but i disagree with everyones interpretation of "hey skin like a doll, your no friend of the family." i think that this line is refering to the ghost of his daughter and how it reminds him of his loss and he comes to resent it because it brings nothing but the same depression and sadness that he felt when he lost her. |
