This song made me think of a rule I heard girls should follow--if a guy asks you out on a Friday, it's because he has been distracted by his work only to realize there are 2 days in a row (the weekend) where he'll have no where to be. A guy like that knows "it's another world at night." I'd say wait for a guy who ask you out on Tuesday, say. Then you know they are thinking of you all week, not just when they're lonely. Unless of course you only think of them when you're lonely, in which case, "you win, I win, we lose." It's just really sad that people aren't taught how to get along and really extend themselves outside of how it suits their own wants. That's what causes loneliness--the "what's in it for me" attitude towards relationships. It doesn't have to be that way.

I must agree as well with phishman about the whole "subject to individual interpretation" thing. What ultimately matters is what it means to you SurferM or you daffyb or me Felicity. I mean, why else would they use metaphor and then NOT write a book about it themselves? Why leave the book writing and explanations up to other people & "friends"? Maybe they don't even care; it was a song that sold millions of records after all. And the mystery (woooo!!) was part of that success. Kinda like Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks with her black lacy shawls and references to witchcraft. When I was a young and impressionable teenager, I just was so woo-ed by that music. BTW, if you want to read a book written by the artist himself, read Mick Fleetwood's book. Anyway, for me personally, I have always liked how the Eagles painted pictures of that whole LA/California scene with lyrics and music; that's how I see their work anyway. When you go there and hang out, it seems to resonate, and it very interesting to me how they have captured that.

Boy, California sure is one big crazy town. Easy to get lost there, you know? Yes, while I would not be surprised that this song is about a specific cult or addiction, I have always thought the Eagles (which one of them wrote the song, BTW?) were quite astute to put out there a picture of what would happen to anyone who got caught up in that sort of party, escapism lifestyle--organized in the form of a cult or not. I look at their other songs that make this same social commentary--Sunset Grill and Life in the Fast Lane for example. These musicians have probably seen a lot of people get very caught up and miserable when all they were looking for was a good time with "friends". "What would we do without all these jerks, anyway? Besides all our friends are here." I know that's out of Sunset Grill, but isn't it the same thing, sans the drugs?

ABBA – Eagle Lyrics

I know there are those out there who may poo-poo Abba's artistical or philosopical relevance, but I have to say this song is very inspirational. It's very rare to find people in life who really just touch your life and get you thinking about those things you have only (up 'til you met them) kept to yourself. Maybe you are the kind of person who feels surrounded by people who zero-charisma and unenlightened, and you feel a need to connect with people who validate your belief that the blahze and obvious existence surrounding you is actually deeper than it appears. No, I'm not stoned, BTW. Since I was a small child, I believed in something more. Call it a vision, call it even a hallucination. Oh, hell, just humor me if you will.

Peter Gabriel – Solsbury Hill Lyrics

I think it's wonderful to be able to express how a song has affected one's life. This song is very inspirational to me. I have had to make some difficult career choices in the past year; ones that may not have made a lot of sense (financially, especially!!) to people that do not share or understand my values. What this has to do with Solsbury Hill (finally getting to that): I've heard from other websites that he wrote this song to sort of tell the story of his experience as he was trying to break free from Genesis. He was the lead singer of that group before Phil Collins. And he had apparently gotten artistically couped up with them and was wanting to move on to do his own work. He wasn't sure about how to make such a transition, so "to keepin' silence he resigned"; and he didn't want to make any sudden moves and alienate himself in the industry ("turnin' water into wine, open doors would soon be shut"). But soon he came to his conclusions about what to do and obviously went for it ("'til I thought of what I'd say, which connections I should cut"). So I think it's a song I relate to now at a time when I'm making decisions, as I mentioned, are not popular, yet I feel for my own happiness, I need to make.
