I've taken a slightly different view on this song... for me it's more like a whole "love from afar" deal. He loves her utterly, but in her high-flying lifestyle she doesn't even know he exists. It's he, however, that is the one who truly knows how to be happy in life, but he can't because he can never have her. So very bittersweet, and made all that more by the incredible orchestra and piano work. One of my all-time favourite songs.
Favourite line - "Write your soul down word for word/See who's your friend/Who is kind"

I agree with zacster, the vid for this song is incredible, and Rob Thomas' voice is perfect for all these angsty songs. This one is especially a favourite of mine... =) |

Stalefish has it right, this song is all about apathy, and the boring trivialities of suburban life. All the mundane events that occur, which you can't esape from, especially in the last verse ("On an evening such as this/It’s hard to tell if I exist"). |

I love this song so much! In my opinion it's basically about being in love with someone that doesn't think you're good enough ("I'll be that girl/And you would be right over"). Full of a very sharp irony. I love it. |
